2.4. General Antenna and Safety Tips

When installing an antenna, follow these general tips: For most elevated antenna installations, we recommend you to ask the professional installers for proper installation and safety. For the safety reasons, you are recommended never to touch a high-gain antenna when it is transmitting or point it at any part of your body. Please, follow carefully the instructions with your antenna. Keep antennas away from metal objects/obstructions (heating and air-conditioning ducts, large ceiling trusses, building superstructures, and major power cabling runs). Use a directional antenna when you establish a link between two buildings. A directional antenna must be properly aligned to the point at the other antenna. Locate an omni-directional antenna in the middle of the desired coverage area if possible. Place the antenna as high as possible to increase the coverage area. Outdoor antennas should be mounted at a sufficient height to prevent the radio path from above the obstructions such as trees and buildings. Antenna towers should keep a safe distance from overhead power lines. The recommended safe distance is twice the tower height. Use the special ground rods and follow the National Electrical Code for the outdoor antenna and tower grounding properly. To prevent water from entering into the antenna cable and be sure to seal all external cable connectors using commercial products just like coax compatible electrical tape and Coax-Seal.

2.5.

Antenna Settings/Alignment

Basic Antenna Setting When you use directional antennas to communicate between two bridges, you must manually align the antennas for proper bridge operation. Please refer to A0 Configuration Guide Chapter 7 for details of monitoring the bridge statistics (shown in Figure 6). RSSI value can be found in the bridge statistics. Manually align the antennas and check the RSSI value, when it gets to the largest value, the antennas are proper bridged. Directional antennas have greatly reduced radiation angles. The radiation angle is approximately 20 degrees for the built-in +17dBi patch antenna.

Figure 6 Statistics Page You can use the link-testing tool to help measure the alignment of two antennas after the bridges are associated. The link-testing tool provides you information you can use to gauge the alignment. After taking all of these checks, you need to use the Web-admin to test the link quality and to see if the RSSI value is in the right value range. You might need to do the Antenna alignment again if the performance is not good enough. Advanced Antenna Alignment The RSSI meter is basically a voltmeter with a patented auto-sensing mechanism to automatically output the RSSI Aux Output to the voltmeter via the BNC port as shown in the following picture. Please note, without using the patented RSSI meter, the RSSI Aux Output function will not be enabled, but the user can still be able to do antenna alignment through the RSSI signal strength indicator on the web page. This useful tool will aid the installer to do the fine-alignment of the Antennas on both sides after the basic Antenna alignment to get the best signal quality. The proprietary RSSI meter will automatically activate the RSSI Aux Output

function when connected to the BNC port, and disable the function when it is removed. With this function, the system performance will not be affected with un-necessary RSSI output function when not required.

RSSI Meter

Figure 7

RSSI meter Connection

The RSSI meter usage is as follows: 1) Remove the cover from the BNC port. 2) Plug (RSSI meter) onto the BNC port. 3) Move the Antenna horizontally and slightly forward and backward to find the position with the maximum value displaying on the RSSI meter and then secure the horizontal position of antenna. 4) Move the Antenna vertically forward and backward to find the best position with the maximum value displaying on the RSSI meter and then secure the vertical position of antenna. 5) Remove the RSSI meter and replace the BNC ports cover. 6) Make sure the BNC weather protection cap is tighten after the testing with the RSSI meter.

Grounding It is essential for the equipments being grounded properly in order to prevent the Bridge from the electrical damage, and also to prevent the possible electric hazer due to non-proper power grounding. Secure the grounding screw tight and the strip connects to the ground. The proper grounding design is required for all outdoor equipments. The poor grounding design could cause the potential electrical damage. We recommend that the A0 WiFi Bridge should be installed with lightning rod to avoid any

potential electrical damage and to be connected with the ground node to the existing ground. Proper grounding will always be the safety consideration for the A0 WiFi Bridge.

Caution: Ground wires and hardware are not provided in the installation kit.

ESD Protection The ESD (electrostatic discharge) can damage the electronic components. The ESD can cause latent damage that results in premature failure even if components remain function. The equipments must be properly grounded. The technical people always need to wear the proper ESD grounding straps and make sure the ESD grounding strap connecting to the ESD connector during equipment installation, maintenance and repairs.

Review the Installation When you finish installing the bridges and aligning the Antennas, you need to secure all cable connection properly. Secure the Antenna mounting set is tight after the alignment. Check the cable connection is between the Antenna and the bridge is tightly. Make sure the grounding strip is properly connected to the Ground. Secure the weather protection cap for RSSI Aux Output BNC connector is tighten. Check the cable to POE adapter is connected correctly. Make sure the cable from the PC or the notebook to the POE adapter is connected appropriately. Make sure the POE adapters light is on. Make sure you use the right cables during the installation. Make sure all connectors are sealed with the waterproof seal. Configure the A0 WiFi Bridge with the setting you want before the field installation.
