COACHES NOTES
FRANK VACCARO - Head Coach As we end another year here at Hamline, I look back at the four years I have been coaching the Pipers. While going through some growing pains, we have lost some good swimmers and divers along the way: to class work, transfers, drop-outs. This year Erin Weslander is our only senior to graduate and move on to bigger things. Erin swam all four years, and has been the team captain both her Junior and Senior years. Her dedication and leadership will definitely be missed and we wish her the best of luck in her endeavors. Looking ahead to next year we will have NO seniors and only a few Juniors. We will have a solid group of returners who have been working hard to gain strength during the off season to be ready for the new swimmers coming in the fall. There are 10 men and 12 women with deposits in for next year nine of which (combined) all competed in their respective state championships and a couple of transfers who will make an impact from day one. We also have 2 female divers who will help push Ingrid. We would also like to welcome Bounce Diving Club to Hamline. Scott Smith, head diving coach, has started to use our pool as one of their training sites for the club. We look forward to working with Scott and Bounce for many years to come! This summer the team has a couple of outings planned to welcome in the new team members while making sure we are all together heading into next years season. We have also finalized our schedule for 2012-2013 and are in the process of planning our annual training trip. We will keep you posted on our destination. Our goal is to alternate through west coast, east coast, southern USA (aka Arizona!!) and finally island trips. We are also going to try and use Facebook more to keep everyone posted on our progress. You can follow our page at www.facebook.com/hamlineuniversityswimmin ganddiving *** Spirit wear is also available. We are selling hats, towels, t-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies. If you are interested please send me an email and we will hook you up! *** Take care and Go Pipers!

End of Season Highlights!

By Renee Punyko 10

If any of our alums/fans were keeping tabs on the Hamline Swim & Dive team during Conference this year, you would have seen a definite improvement over last season! We had around 95% PR times and were able to score points on both the mens and womens side! Ingrid Haugan broke into several slots on our diving top 10 lists, as well has Hannah Hawker in the backstroke. Having had such a young team this year shows great potential for our 2012-13 Season not only with our returning athletes, but our incoming freshman class! As of right now, we have 17 committed first years (8 men, 9 women) who will add both depth and speed to our current team. Its a very exciting time and we are still meeting with recruits weekly! Our only senior Erin Weslander will be graduating this spring with a degree in Anthropology. She is looking to pursue a career as a pharmacist and will be attending the U of MN next year to continue her education. She has been a valued member of the Hamline team 4 consecutive years, adding depth and swimming conference relays each season. We wish Erin good luck! with her endeavors she will definitely be missed next year!

I enjoyed reading the January issue of The Aqueduct. I must admit to some envy when reading about a wintertime training trip to AZ! Such things were unheard of in my day - even for BASKETBALL, much less for a swim team that numbered less than 10. In fact the team provided their own transportation to dual meets. The 20 yard pool was in the same building that housed the long gone Off-Campus club, as I recall. Spending an hour or more working out without goggles meant an evening with very blurred vision, as the custodial staff had little idea how to maintain the pool except to add a flocculent (alum) when it got cloudy looking, so it was always acidic. I was a terrible swimmer; my best 100 time was 1:06.0. We won only one dual meet in four years, my last, against St. Olaf. That was the first I won, swimming 200 yd breaststroke for the very first time, beating a swimmer who would win the conference title in that event a few days later. (As a result, I

was seeded pretty high at the conference meet and tried to keep ahead of the Conference champion again, dying with two laps to go.) I think I was also on the winning medley relay team at that last dual meet. I was the "utility man", and I never knew what I would swim until I heard my name as the event was introduced. I even picked up 3rd place in diving once, likely with a record low score. Our coach for two years was Les Bodine. He had been an OSS Frogman during WWII and participated in several invasions in the Pacific theater. After he graduated, Roger Ahlman took over. During his tenure I established a tank/school record for the 60 yd Free that stood for some time, but I believe to this day that it was a mistake. There was no Girls team then, but there was a Women's Water Ballet Team (or whatever they called it) that was coached by Dr Perry Moore's daughter, Laura. By the way, I meant to mention that our star was Mark Fawcett. He was slightly built and didn't have the giant shoulders that today's swimmers all seem to sport. When he was working on his 1500 the rest of the team would take turns swimming 100s with him. We usually had trouble keeping with him after a couple of turns. Another teammate was the son of General Rawlings, one of Hamline's distinguished alumni, who became chairman of General Mills. He (the son) had some goggles that he acquired when his Dad was in Hawaii on Air Force business. They were made from bone, were tiny and sort of sucked right into your eyeballs; didn't even need a strap to hold them. I hated them. We had another guy who sort of dislocated his shoulder quite often when doing a flip turn in backstroke events (We had to touch the wall with our hand in those days and used it for leverage.) He would wiggle it back into place as he swam. Weird.... I found that as Captain, I was obligated to stuff towels into the pool drains before dual meets to raise the water level. After the meet, the Captain's job was to pick up all the towels and get them washed and dried. Currently, I am quite active as a volunteer crewman aboard a 77 foot schooner (S/V Inland Seas) that is used to teach kids about taking care of the environment, particularly the Great Lakes. (Inland Seas Education Assoc; cf http://schoolship.org) Our Acting Education Director (and fellow crewman) is Emily Shaw who is also a Hoosier, but I think she's from Bloomington. Bob Hagerman 52

Swim Lessons: If you have a child that still needs to go through swim lessons or would like to continue their swimming and water safety education, let us know!. Instructors will use a modified Red Cross training to teach. Hamline swimming and diving has a long tradition of success both academically and athletically. We want to continue to follow that tradition and add even more achievements to our already extensive resume. One way you as an alum can help is by keeping piper pride alive and well If you coach a team, have kids on a team or even just know someone interested in pursuing their swimming career please let them know about Hamline and Division III swimming & diving. Not only does it make our program stronger, it helps swimmers know they have more options than just Division I and Division II. Thank you for your continued support and GO PIPERS!
