Albany Common Council Members Endorse Kindlon for DA

Today, Lee Kindlon, Democratic candidate for Albany County District Attorney, received the endorsement of six members of the Albany Common Council. Joined by Council members Lester Freeman (2nd Ward), Ronald E. Bailey (3rd Ward), John Rosenzweig (8th Ward), Anton A. Konev (11th Ward), Daniel F. Herring (13th Ward), and Joseph M. Igoe (14th Ward), Kindlon stood on the steps of Albany City Hall and promised a safer Albany County and better DAs office if hes elected. Im honored to have the endorsement of these six council members, Kindlon said. Together, they have nearly fifty years of public service in the council. They know their neighborhoods, they know their constituents and they know that we can do more to make Albany a safer place to live. Kindlon continued, Over the last eight years, we havent moved forward, weve gone backward. Albany County has the second highest crime rate in the state and that is unacceptable. On top of that, this DA, despite his promises otherwise, sends more non-violent, low-level drug offenders to prison than ever before. Hes failed on drug reform, hes failed labor, and after eight years, hes turned his back on the progressive community that elected him in 2004. Introducing Lee at the press conference, Council member Ronald E. Bailey said, Primaries are tough races. Youve got Democrat against Democrat. But this election is not about ideology. Lee and the incumbent DA are both progressives. This election is about competence, leadership and keeping your word. Kindlon said if hes elected hell work with the Albany Common Council to address crime and the problems specific to Albanys many diverse neighborhoods. Kindlon said hell run a progressive office, reform juvenile justice and build stronger ties with police and community groups to make Albanys neighborhoods safer.

Council member Lester Freeman (2nd Ward) said, When people dont feel safe in their own neighborhoods that means its time for a change. The current way of doing business just isnt working and its time to head in a new direction. Thats what Lee represents. Council member Ronald E. Bailey (3rd Ward) said, Lee said it best; too many kids are going straight from the school bus to the jail cell. We cant ignore that fact and expect things to get better on their own. With Lees leadership, Albany County will finally address the need for real juvenile justice reform. Council member John Rosenzweig (8th Ward) said, As a teacher, I see the truancy problem firsthand, but the current DA isnt doing anything about it. Lee understands the importance of keeping kids in school. Lee knows that alternatives to incarceration can work in Albany County. Lee knows there are kids out there who deserve a second chance. He'll make truancy a top priority, he'll expand youth courts and that's why I support Lee Kindlon for DA." Council member Anton A. Konev (11th Ward) said, "We need a District Attorney who is experienced in the courtroom. As a trial lawyer and former prosecutor, Lee has the courtroom experience to ensure that quality of life crimes are prosecuted to the full letter of the law. And as a family man and Marine, Lee has the integrity and discipline we expect from a District Attorney. Council member Daniel F. Herring (13th Ward) said, The attorneys and staff in the District Attorneys office are honest hardworking men and women, but theres no leadership at the top. And without leadership the office cant function as its supposed to. Im endorsing Lee Kindlon because hell bring that leadership back to the DAs office. He has the experience, competence and integrity, and hell be an outstanding DA. Council member Joseph M. Igoe (14th Ward) said, I endorse Lee Kindlon because he has the character, leadership qualities and work ethic to restore professionalism and integrity to the DAs office. Lee will deliver results, ensure justice is done fairly and efficiently, and improve conviction rates. ###
