This chart shows the increase in the percent of the population 60 and older from 6 percent in 1900 to 16 percent in 2000 and projected to be 25 percent in 2030 and 26 percent in 2050. It shows the percent of the population 65 and older increasing from 4 percent in 1900 to 12 percent in 2000 and projected to be 19 percent in 2030 and 20 percent in 2050. It also shows the percent of the population 85 and older increasing from 0.2 percent in 1900 to 1.5 percent in 2000 and projected to be 2.3 percent in 2030 and 4.3 percent in 2050.
