ARGUMENT The following is a memorandum from the business manager of a television station.

Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news. During this time period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our stations coverage of weather and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news program have just canceled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to the program and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level. Write a response in which you discuss what specifi c evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

ESSAY (400 words approxy) (TIME :50 MIN) The author here claims that due to increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news at their late night programs complaints regarding the same have been prominent and that local businesses that used to advertise during their late-night news program have canceled their advertising contracts with the company. However this claim is not substantiated with enough evidence. Primarily the writer has not specified what type of complaints regarding the weather or local news that the company received and that the complaints received were from which variety of people . The possibility that only a certain section that was complaining rep-eatedly cannot be neglected .Furthermore there are chances that the channel might have given incorrect weather forecasts or news on a regular basis which might have been the cause of the grieviance caused . Regarding the reduction in advertising revenues , there can be a probability that the companies advertising must not be getting their moneys worth or possibly that a rival television company was giving them the same amount of coverage for a lower rate . Furthermore recession , loss of revenues for those companies , cutting back on expenses etc are some of the reasons which could have led them to cancel contracts and which have not been specified by the writer. The manager could have strengthened his argument had he taken a survey from a varied group of people or reasons as to why companies were cancelling their advertising contracts had been specified . Despite the tevevision manager feeling that to avoid losing further advertising revenues they restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level a thorough investigation ought to be done .Things like television ratings for that slot of the night for their channel and corresponding rivals should be checked .If some other channel have something new on offer then it would be pointless going back to the same old routine and as the channel had already changed their night slot it must have been for a reason . In conclusion ,though what the manager has stated might be right ,he or she should support it with enough evidence and check out various possibilities regarding the same . Various surveys also ought to be done to find what exactly people like watching during particular slots and due implementation can probably lead to improved results.
