Lafayette police officer placed on leave after dispute

The Advocate (Baton Rouge, La.) - Saturday, November 20, 1999 An 11-year veteran of the Lafayette Police Department was placed on administrative leave after he allegedly fought with his wife early Friday morning. Cpl . Dwayne Prejean , 37, was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center with simple battery domestic violence, according to booking records. Lafayette Parish Sheriff's deputies arrived at Prejean 's house at 416 Parklane Road after receiving a report of a domestic dispute about 1:45 a.m. Friday, Sheriff's Office spokesman Gus Boulanger said. Deputies determined that Prejean and his wife, Cynthia, had argued and had a physical altercation, Boulanger said. Cynthia Prejean had some marks, but neither required medical attention, Boulanger said. After reviewing the initial reports of the case, Police Chief Charles Crenshaw placed Prejean on administrative leave with pay, Sgt. Mike DiBenedetto said. Any other Police Department discipline is pending an internal affairs investigation, he said. The Sheriff's Office will send the charges to the District Attorney's Office, Boulanger said. Prejean is a detective assigned to the Crime Scene unit, DiBenedetto said.
