1. The players union for Major League Baseball has, in recent years, successfully lobbied for huge increases in the salaries of the top players in the league. A sample of 79 median team salaries was collected over the last five years. The data (in $100,000 s) is represented in the graph below. (a) How many teams had a median salary of at least $2 million? (b) What proportion of the teams had a median salary between $500,000 and $1,250,000? (c) What percentage of the teams had a median salary of at most $700,000? (d) How would you describe the behavior of the median team salaries sampled?

(e) Interpret the graph. 2. Hybrid cars use two types of engine/motor technologies: gasoline and electric. The electric motor, that takes some of the load off the gasoline engine, is charged every time the brakes are applied (the energy created from the braking process is transferred to charging the battery). As a result of the dual engine design, hybrid cars get considerably better gas mileage than the standard gasoline engine vehicles. The graph below represents the best mileage ratings (in miles per gallon or mpg) of several randomly selected hybrid vehicles on the road today (including experimental hybrid trucks and sport utility vehicles). 0 9 (leaf unit = 1) 1 8 9 2 7 7 8 3 0 0 1 7 4 0 1 1 1 5 5 6 7 9 5 0 0 0 1 1 1 3 4 4 4 5 6 6 7 8 9 9 6 1 3 6 6 7 7 8 8 9 (a) What is the sample size? (b) What percentage of the vehicles had a mileage rating between 40 mpg and 60 mpg, inclusive? (c) What was the best mileage rating? (d) How would you describe the behavior of the mileage ratings?

3. Credit card usage is requiring an increasing amount of information from users in order to avoid credit card theft and abuse. For example, an applicant s annual income, among other factors, will dictate their credit limit. The graph below represents the annual income of 40 randomly selected credit card applicants from last years San Francisco Bay Area applications. Each leaf unit = $1,000. 3 6 4 3 5 (a) What was the smallest annual income on the sample? 5 1 2 5 7 (b) What percentage of the applicants had an annual income 6 0 1 3 6 7 of a t least $100,000? 7 2 2 2 2 3 8 (c) Credit card companies automatically approve applicants whose salary is in the top 25% of all applicants. Based on 8 1 1 3 7 8 5 8 9 these criteria, what is the minimum income of the people 9 2 2 5 6 6 9 who are automatically approved for this sample? 10 0 0 2 (d) Describe the sample of annual incomes. 11 1 3 3 12 4 13 6

4. The national average number of weekly hours spent watching television by children under the age of 12 years old was recorded for each state in the year 2000 and in the year 1975. The data set depicted in the graph below represents each state s average from the year 2000 minus the average from 1975. (a) How many states had an increase in average time spent by children watching television for more than two hours per week? (b) What percentage of the states had a decrease in average television viewing time from 1975 to 2000?

(c) Describe the data. (d) Characterize the overall change in television watching time by children in 1975 compared to the year 2000. 5. A nationwide survey was conducted across college and university campuses where 500 students were asked to state their political party affiliation. The results of the random sample are summarized in the graph below. (a) How many students stated they were a member of the Democratic Party? (b) Based on this data, if another 500 students were sampled, do you think that there would be more republicans or democrats?

6. The National Association of Realtors has found that the real estate markets in the Boston, Manhattan, and the San Francisco Bay Area have not followed the typical cyclical pattern of the rest of the country. The graph below represents a sample of 45 recent home sale prices in the San Francisco Bay Area.

(a) What percent of the properties in the sample sold for more that $1 million? (b) If property taxes are assessed at 1.5% of the reselling price per year how many homes in the sample had property taxes of less than $12,000 per year? (c) How would you describe the sample of home selling prices?
