Rare condition prompts Kennedys Cause
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
Kennedy Hubbard is a typical
14-year-old. She just started her
sophomore year in high school
and she loves to play volleyball
and hang out with her friends. A
volleyball net is set up in the front
yard and her dachshund,
Frankie, is barking to get inside
from the backyard. Summer is
coming to an end and mom cant
wait for her to go back to school.
The Hubbard familys vaca-
tions are a little different. Leanne
Hubbard said that she takes
Kennedy out of school the week
before Memorial Day and spends
almost a week in North Carolina.
This past trip was their third
year and they will continue to go.
We take her out of school be-
cause for us to go on vacation at
peek times, everybody is staring
at you. Its just not relaxing,
Hubbard said.
Kennedy was born with a rare
condition called lymphatic mal-
formation. It affects her facial ap-
pearance, but not her spirit.
Sometimes its easier to keep
your blinders on and not know
things in detail, said Hubbard.
Its easier to see things on the
surface.

Moorestown on hunt for Emerald Ash Beetles
A Barney trap is a three sided,
purple trap (the same color as a
friendly dinosaur) covered in
sticky glue that attracts, captures
and holds the Emerald Ash Beetle
(EAB).
John Gibson and Jay Hartman,
members of the Moorestown
Tree Planting and Preservation
Committee, hung Barney traps
high in the branches of several
ash trees in public parks around
town. They will be taken down
and inspected in the fall, to deter-
mine if the EAB has reached our
town.
The EAB is an invasive pest
from Asia that feeds on and kills
ash trees within three years after
infestation. Presence of the

Moorestown resident
climbs Mt. Kilimanjaro
Climbing the tallest mountain
in Africa is not your average ad-
venture. In fact, it can be life
changing. In July 2012, Jacob
Shirmer, 27, of Moorestown,
climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,340
feet) on the six-day Machame
Route.
Also known as the Whiskey
Route, this route is the second
most popular route. It is a more
difficult route but incredibly
beautiful. Although the climb is
not a technical climb, summit day
is long, strenuous and at high ele-
vation.
Shirmer climbed the mountain
with fellow recent graduates from
the Johnson Graduate School of
Management at Cornell Universi-
ty and planned the trip to cele-
brate their achievements.
We are taking this trip as a
celebration of an amazing two
years earning our MBAs from
Johnson at Cornell University.
Before starting our new careers,
we wanted to go on a trip that was
life-changing in its challenge, ad-
venture, and beauty; a trip wed
remember for the rest of our
lives, Shirmer, said. All four suc-
cessfully reached the summit on
July 24.
Mount Kilimanjaro, located
three degrees south of the equa-
tor in northeastern Tanzania, is
the tallest mountain in Africa,
and the highest freestanding
mountain in the world.
Kilimanjaro is our hottest des-
tination, Robin Paschall, owner
of Adventures Within Reach said.
Of the famous Seven Summits,
this is the easiest to get to and the
easiest to climb. It requires no
technical climbing experience,
and any moderately fit person

undetected until trees show
symptoms of being infested usu-
ally the upper third of a tree will
thin and then die back. This is
usually followed by a large num-
ber of shoots or branches arising
below the dead portions of the
trunk. Other symptoms of infes-
tation include: small D-shaped
exit holes in the bark where
adults have emerged, vertical
splits in the bark, and distinct ser-
pentine-shaped tunnels beneath
the bark in the cambium, where
larvae effectively stop food and
water movement in the tree,
starving it to death.
EAB has killed millions of ash
trees in Illinois, Idaho, Kentucky,
Minnesota, Missouri, New York,
Ohio, Ontario, Pennsylvania,
Tennessee, Quebec, Virginia,
West Virginia and Wisconsin.
There is no government eradica-
tion program. Its up to each indi-
vidual property owner to decide
what to do if a beetle is found on
his or her property. The options
include doing nothing, spraying a
pesticide or removing the infest-
ed trees.
The Barney traps hung by the

f you purchased your house before
2007, youve probably endured
about five years of misery. Your
home probably isnt worth as much as
it was back then. The housing market
has been kicked around, the news al-
ways seemed to be bad and getting
worse, and people had to wonder if the
downward spiral would ever end.
Well, maybe it has.
Zillow reported last month that the
second quarter was a good one for
home prices. They actually went up
year over year. Not a lot, but up is bet-
ter than down.
And, considering the economy has-
nt exactly been on fire, the news is es-
pecially promising.
If the trend continues, its great
news for the economy.
From a purely practical standpoint,
rising values can free up equity (al-
though it might take awhile to get peo-
ple right side up on their home val-
ues). Then, homeowners can begin to
tap that equity to make repairs, pay off
other bills, etc. And when people spend
money, jobs are created.
It also would be a boost to the nation-
al psyche. A homes worth long has
been a kind of security blanket for
families. Over the years, there had
been ups and downs in the market, but,
again, over time, home values steadily
increased. There was a confidence that
you could always rely on your biggest
investment: your home.
That, of course, all changed about
five years ago.
Thats not to say that all will be well
by next Tuesday. The glut of foreclosed
homes, the negative equity many
homeowners still have and the like will
continue to weigh on the market. Were
not seeing a dramatic, sudden turn of
fortune. But the kind of sustained
growth Zillow reported definitely beats
the alternative.
At the least, maybe homeowners
have seen the worst of the housing
storm. Maybe they begin to regain a
little confidence in the future of their
home. Maybe they can relax. A little.

Once the surgery begins,

Hubbard takes Kennedy to
duPont.
Hubbard said they started rais-
ing money for organizations such
as the Kelly Anne Dolan Fund,
Operation Smile, the Dooley
House, and Leukemia Lymphoma
Society before establishing
Kennedys Cause.
For a few years, Kennedy had
birthday parties that raised
more than $20,000 to help
benefit people with a similar dis-
ease.
They had to stop the parties six
years ago because Kennedys
older sister, Casey, was getting
ready to go to college.
Recently, they created
Kennedys Cause to help raise
money for the Vascular Anom-
alies Center at the Childrens Hos-
pital in Boston to help find
a cure for lymphatic malforma-
tion.
Kennedys Cause is a non-profit
organization that was founded to
not only raise money but to help
raise awareness of lymphatic
malformation.
Hubbard and Kennedy make
bracelets, sell car magnets, neck-
laces and T-shirts to help spread
the word about Kennedys Cause
and add to the donations.
All proceeds go to various or-
ganizations to help find a cure.
Kennedy is continuing to
Shine through this whole
process.
She is looking forward to get-
ting back to playing volleyball at
the high school.
To find out more about
Kennedys Cause and to donate,
visit www.kennedyscause.com.
You can also find the organization
on Facebook by searching for
Kennedys Cause.
