CAPTAIN SHOUTS FORE!

After Royal was in such good condition, we were lucky to have Glendower in an even better state! Everybody struggled with the greens, including my playing partner, Barry Steen, the clubs new Events Manager. Unfortunately, the club were in the process of electing a new Captain that evening, so there was no incumbent to join me, but my thanks to Kevin Monk, the outgoing Captain for speaking on behalf of Glendower. I was also joined by Alan Harper, from Volvo and Graham Boyle, an old friend from Zimbabwe days, on the occasion of his 15 year tie. A big thank you to Volvo for the sponsorship of the Volvo Day, which was won by Larry B (again). I think the combined advantages of playing off his Glendower club handicap and playing at home make Larry the favourite for the tournament every year. (I think this is his third victory at club level and he almost won the tournament outright in Scotland a few years ago!) The Mystery Tour went very well and congratulations to Dobri for stumping us all again, by his choice of course. We went to Bankenveld on the edge of Witbank Dam, which was designed as an 18 hole course, but only the rst 9 have been built. It is populated by plenty of wild game, including zebra and several species of buck, which does not help the condition of the course, because the most succulent grass is on and around the greens! I am also not quite sure why they insist on walking through the bunkers and never rake them after themselves! Talking of which, I was sent a photo of a bunker from Glendower, where a Nomad had done similarly. Perhaps we will need to adopt their rule of being able to place in the bunkers. I am off to Zimbabwe next week for the Zim Nomads Nationals, joined by Byron and a returning Cyril Ferrar. Good luck guys, play well and bring the trophy back to Gauteng! Unfortunately, the small turn out seems to be indicative of all of the away tours. We still need players for the Durban July weekend, which unfortunately clashes with the National Management Meeting in PE, the same weekend, which means that I cannot go. We certainly hope that Natex takes cognizance of the xed date for the oldest inter-provincial game in Nomads in the future. On the subject of touring, and the low numbers we are getting, does anyone have any ideas how we can change things to make the tours more popular in future. We have decided that the Mystery Tour format is good and will

GLENDOWER RECENTLY WELCOMED THE GAUTENG NOMADS FOR OUR MAY MONTHLY GAME + VOLVO MASTERS. be repeated next year but the other tours could be changed if there is an overwhelming response. If you have any ideas, or suggestions, please mention them to me at the next game. Regrettably, I have just heard that Russel Cuyler passed away on Sunday. Our sympathies go to Lydia, Dion, Eugene, Lance and the rest of the family. The funeral will be on Thursday 7th June at 13:00, at Gracepoint Methodist Church, 125 Duncan Rd, Glenfurness. Bev is away, so we are having difculty with the SMS-ing, so please pass this information on to all your fellow Nomads. This announcement was uploaded onto the D6 communicator, so those of you who are in the 21st century will have received it. I have mentioned the D6 Communicator at prize giving for several months. Bev has sent out several links so you can easily join the D6 community. Follow the link and register; every time there is a new update on the Gauteng Nomads website, a reminder will pop up on your screen, so that you know something new has been posted. It is a really good system and allows you to save time by not having to seek what is new. Do yourself a favour and register.

JUST ME We have done all the research possible, concerning a differential of more than 41 points in a Gary Player game, but we are unable to nd anything on record. Unfortunately the year, this took place, is unknown and Noreen & Brian Cusins, who did the draws for so many years, do not have anything on record. However, following up on my previous comment, I was phoned this past Sunday afternoon to be told that the two players who gave away 41 points had in fact won their match by 2 points. Another interesting point, that I missed previously, was the fact that there were three Nomads Sons in that fourball. I believe that the Mystery Tour was a great success and two of our Nomads, who will remain nameless, each scored 44 Individual Stableford Points (we knew this was bound to happen with the new handicapping system!). There should be more on this later, from our Away Tours Ofcer. The Durban Trip is denitely on for the rst weekend in July. The Friday game will be at The Bluff Golf Club and the Sunday game at Umhlali Country Club. We have had 14 inductees in the past 15 months and this is your chance to go and enjoy a Nomads Away Weekend with the guys, so give Dobri a tinkle (082 901 1132) as he is looking for participants. The Andrew Mentis Golf Day (your 13th annual game) will denitely be played at Modderfontein Golf Club on Friday the 24th August 2012. Entry Forms are currently being prepared so start putting your own fourball together and lets give Spero all the support he needs to reach his target for his chosen beneciary. Many thanks to Alan Needham for his entertaining and amusing touch whilst doing the starting on the rst tee at Glendower. There is talk of Gauteng Nomads playing a challenge against Alans THUGS (Thursday Golfers Society) later in the year. How nice it was to see Nigel Tjirpie Ford, looking so much better, at a meeting again and a big thank you to Michael Payne for fetching Nigel before the game and for taking him home before the night air closed in. We say goodbye to Cecil Holmes, he and Audi have decided to go back to Zimbabwe (from whence he came as a Rhodesian Founder Nomad) and to Jerome Davis (he was our 2006 Captain and a 36-year Nomad who originally came from Rhodesia too). Good luck to both of you. The Captains Dinner will take place at The World of Beer, in downtown Johannesburg, on Tuesday the 18th September 2012. Our Guest Speaker has been conrmed as Denis Hutchinson a fellow Nomad and the "commentator voice that we all know so well. There is lots of parking inside the premises so put together a party and come and have a great evening with Hutchy and your fellow Nomads. Remember that the next game, at Kyalami on the 20th June 2012, is also another Wednesday game. THE CHICKEN FARMER A chicken farmer went to his local bar, sat next to a woman and ordered a glass of champagne. The women perks up and says, How about that! I just ordered a glass of champagne too! What a coincidence, the farmer says, This is a special day for me, Im celebrating. This is a special day for me too, Im also celebrating! says the woman. What a coincidence says the man. As they clinked glasses the farmer asked, What are you celebrating? My husband and I have been trying to have a child and today my gynaecologist told me that Im pregnant! What a coincidence says the man, Im a chicken farmer and for years all my hens were infertile but today theyre nally laying fertilised eggs. Fancy that! says the women, How did your chickens become fertile? I used a different cock, he replied. The women smiled and said, What a coincidence!
