EAST JORDAN The
East Jordan Red Devils will
suit up only 17 football
players when they take the
field for the first snap this
season, but those 17 young
men bring with them a
tough work ethic and a
great attitude.
Well, we don't have a lot
of kids out this season, but
their attitude is great, its a
breath of fresh air, vet-
eran coach Allan Peterson
said. I'm proud of these
guys and how hard they
have been working.
Some of the top re-
turnees and early surprises
for the Red Devils will be
senior, Zack Shepard, an
athletes who has come
along way since his football
days began. Junior Ben
Walton, is regarded and an
outstanding athlete and
super player, and Weston
Swanson a junior that came
into the preseason with
some added foot speed and
has been a pleasant sur-
prise.
We have a positive out-
look on the season, Peter-
son added. Were pretty
optomistic about things
and we look to surprise a
few people and do well.

EAST JORDAN The Red Devils return
two very talented runners in the form of
junior Josh Wojan on the boys team and
sophomore sensation Kayla Keane on the
girls.
We look for Josh to be one of the top
runners in the area and he will be hard to
beat. Red Devil coach Rick Hawley said.
Our girls team is doing well and will be
led by Kayla.
Rounding out the boys team are junior
Donvee Burks, sophomore Gabe Hawley
and freshman Teddy Nachazel.
Donvee and Gabe should be very com-
petitive for us in league, and Teddy looks
good as a young runner. the coach added.
The girls squad is compromised of sen-
ior Casey Keane, juniors, Holley Carson,
Tess McNitt, Ellen Brandell and Tori
Goodrich. All four juniors are third year
runners, with Goodrich transferring from
Ellsworth.
Another high note for the girls team is
freshmen Brittanie Moses.
I see a very competetive runner in Brit-
tanie, Hawley added. I believe she will be
a big asset to our girls team.

Lady Red Devils take to the court
East Jordan Varsity Volleyball
Charlevoix Varsity Volleyball Boyne City Varsity Volleyball
By Chris Fiel
EAST JORDAN
Coach Anne Crick will
look to third year starter
and senior Valerie Pe-
ters to lead the Lady Red
Devils on the court this
year.
The standout three
sport athlete is one of
the areas top hitters and
will resume her position
as strong side hitter for
East Jordan this fall. Pe-
ters led the team last sea-
son as a junior in kills,
digs and serving.
Seniors Angela
Watkins, McKenna
Steltzner and Stevie Bar-
tig return to the line-up,
Watkins will return to
her middle hitter posi-
tion, Bartig will move
over to the setter posi-
tion and Steltzner will be
filling the libero position
for the Red Devils. Fel-
low senior Allie Sutton
will also contribute.
Also on the team are
juniors; Mariah Holm,
Lindsey Graham and
Paige Poindexter, along
with sophomores Kris-
ten Malpass and Katie
Spence.
The girls have
worked hard this sum-
mer attending team
camp and multiple
scrimmages, coach
Crick said. We are look-
ing forward to the sea-
son.

CHARLEVOIX The 2011
Charlevoix Rayder Volleyball
team took the Northern Michi-
gan area on quite a tournament
ride last season, where they
reached the state semifinals for
the first time in school history,
and in the process captured
their fourth straight Lake
Michigan Conference champi-
onship, district title and their
first ever regional crown.
The 2012 squad will take on a
new look with some different
faces, and one of those in coach
Audra Randall. Randall has
been part of coach Liz Shaw's
staff for the past eight years
and takes over the program
with Shaw taking some time off
to deliver her family's second
child.
I have been part of Coach
Shaw's staff for eight years.
Having a congruent philosophy
is instrumental for a successful
program. I plan on maintaining
the foundation and integrity of
our Rayder Volleyball Program
which will allow for a smooth
transition into our 2012 season,
Randall said. I am grateful for
my experiences with the 2011
team, they are all wonderfully
talented girls who were well
coached. Those experiences
allow me to grow as a coach and
move forward confident in the
girls mission to continue our
great Rayder Volleyball tradi-
tion.
Some of the top returnees off
that team are: senior, Karley
Pearsall, a middle hitter. Ran-
dall expects her to be a big im-
pact player again this year.
Karley is a big middle hitter
with great blocking skills, and
will be taking on more responsi-
bilities in the back row this
year.
Another veteran is senior
middle hitter, Anna Way. Way
has great agility and speed and
reads the opponents offense well
and her responsibilities will in-
crease with passing and back
row defense as well.
Sophomore, left hitter Made-
line Boss has worked on her
game a lot over the summer and
excels in the front row and
looks to be a strong defensive
presence.
Randall expects the team to
continue to work hard each and
everyday in practice so when
they take the court they are pre-
pared to compete at a high level.
We have a long history of
fine Rayder Volleyball achieve-
ments and the 2012 team knows
that the hard work and commit-
ment is what it takes to grow
and succeed, the coach added.
As a team, the girls cannot
compare themselves to last year
but create a new identity for
themselves. She said. There
may be a few bumps along the
way but overcoming them and
growing in a positive way is
where our teams success will
come.
Rayders poised for
another great season

BOYNE CITY The Ramblers
welcome back eight returnees
from last seasons 20-20-8 team,
including three players entering
their third season on the varsity.
Those third year players are
senior outside hitter Dani
Matthews, junior middle hitter
Kylie Hicks and junior setter
Heather Nichols.
Also returning are: senior
Mary Myers, along with juniors
Courtney Weldon, Erin Baker,
Rainy McCune and Mallory
Karaszewski.
Our strength for this season
should be our experience and
team chemistry, nine year vet-
eran Rambler coach Casie
Parker said. They have a good
team bond.
New to the team are; juniors
Taylor Baker, Emily Evans and
Rebeca Wiser along with sopho-
more Paige Hornbeck.
Hicks was among the team
leaders in hitting, blocking and
defense last season, while
Nichols was in setting and
Karaszewski, Baker and Weldon
on defense.
They have put in a lot of time
out of season and as a result we
are able to do and work on some
things we have not been able to
do in the past, Parker noted. I
think our weak points are going
to be playing consistent and with
confidence.

PELLSTON The host Hornet
defeated Onaway, 25-23, 25-23, in
the championship match on Au-
gust 18, to capture the 12-team
Pellston Primary at Pellston High
School.
Boyne City finished the day
Boyne City finished 5-1-1 in the
tournament, falling to Onaway,
21-25, 23-25, in a semifinal match.
The Ramblers went 4-0-1 in pool
play, defeating Forest Area, 25-13,
25-12; Harbor Light, 25-14, 25-18;
Charlevoix, 25-22, 25-20; and In-
land Lakes, 25-18, 25-12. Boyne
then split with Pellston, 25-21, 20-
25.
In bracket play, the Ramblers
beat East Jordan, 25-15, 25-21, to
advance to the semifinal.
Leading Boyne on the day was:
Kylie Hicks with 44 kills, 20
blocks and 55 digs, and Mary
Myers added 20 kills.
Also for Boyne, setter Heather
Nichols finished with 89 assists
and 16 aces on the day, Mallory
Karaszewski added 36 digs, and
Rainy McMcune had 33 digs. Tay-
lor Baker served at 100 percent
for the Ramblers.
goal was to come out strong
and we did until bracket play,"
Boyne City coach Casie Parker
said. "We also played consistent
in pool play, which was another
goal.
"When it came to the playoffs
(bracket play) we lost focus and
looked tired. We started tipping a
lot instead of hitting the ball. All
in all we improved over last
year's tournament play and know
what we need to work on." Parker
added. We had strong net play
from Hick and Myers, and
Nichols served tough all day and
did a great job of setting the girls
up.
Charlevoix went 2-2-2 on the
day, falling to Onaway in the
quarterfinal of bracket play 20-25,
19-25.
In pool play, the Rayders went
2-1-2, as they split with Inland
Lakes, 25-13, 18-25; split with Pell-
ston, 26-27, 26-24; defeated Forest
Area, 25-18, 25-20; fell to Boyne
City, 18-25, 20-25 and beat Harbor
Light 25-15, 25-14.
The girls played hard through-
out the day and adapted well a
new group of players, coach
Audra Randall said. Our focus is
to build consistency in our game,
defensive strategy and endurance
for tournament play.
Leading the Rayders on the day
were: Madeline Boss with 39 kills,
17 digs and 86% serve recieve,
while Karley Pearsall added 21
kills, seven aces, 36 digs, eight
blocks and 86% serve receive.
Also for Charlevoix, Anna Way
finished with 20 kills, 27 digs,
eight aces; Gloria Greene had 31
digs, 26 assists; Jennaca
Holecheck had 37 digs, nine kills;
and Cassidy Peebles added 25 as-
sists and 24 digs.
This was a good indication of
where we are with other competi-
tive teams, Randall added. Im
proud of their play on Saturday
(Aug. 18), we can build off this in
a positive manner and be compet-
itive in our conference and at
tournaments.
