1. A horizontal L-shaped bar ABC, fixed at A bent at B , free at C of equal length


AB = BC = L is subjected to a vertical point load of P at the free end. Assuming
uniform flexural rigidity EI for both the members, Find the vertical deflection at
the free end. [16]

2. (a) What is the significance of shear force diagrams and bending moment diagrams
with reference to beams
(b) Calculate the maximum bending moment for a cantilever beam with UDL,‘w’over
its entire span, L of flexural rigidity, EI. [16]

3. A cantilever which is fixed at one end and propped at other end and of length 4m
is subjected to point load 20 KN at the mid span.
Find the prop reaction. [16]

4. A frame shown in fig.is hinged at A and D and loaded at E as shown in figure4. Find
the reactions at A and D using Castiglino’s theorem and draw bending moment
diagram assuming uniform flexural rigidity,EI. [16]

5. All the horizontal and vertical members are of equal length, L A truss is loaded as
shown in figure5 .Find the forces in the members AB,BC,CD and their nature and
tabulate the forces. [16]

6. A slender column, 1800mm long and of rectangular section 30mm×12mm transmits


a longitudinal load P acting at the center of each end. The column was slightly
bent about its major principal axis before loading .If P is increased from 500 N to
1500 N, the deflection at the center is increased by 4mm. Determine the amount
of deflection before loading. [16]

7. Compare the crippling loads given by Rankine’s formula and Euler’s Formula for a
tubular strut having outer and inner diameters as 37.5 mm And 32.5 mm respec-
tively loaded through pin joints at both ends. The critical stress is 32.5 KN/cm2 .
k1 = 1/7500 E = 2× 105 N/mm2 . [16]

8. A cantilever beam-column of span L is subjected to axial compressive load P, fol-


lowed by a transverse point load Q at a distance ‘a’ from the fixed end.

(a) Write the beam column equations considering buckling at a section

1. A simply simple supported beam (S.S.B) of span L is subjected to uniform distrib-


uted loading, ‘w’ per unit length over its entire span. Find the Maximum slope and
maximum deflection using double integration method. Assume uniform flexural

2. (a) Explain shear force and bending moment with reference to beams
(b) Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for any four types Beams.

3. Explain clapeyron’s theorem of three moments with the help of continuous beam
with uniform distributed loading. [16]

4. Determine the deflection under 60 KN load for the beam ACB shown in figure4
using Castiglino’s theorem E=2×105 N/mm2 [16]

6. A steel bar of solid circular cross-section is 50mm in diameter. The bar is pinned at
both ends and subjected to axial compression .If the crushing stress of the material
is 210 Mpa and E=200Gpa,determine

(a) The minimum length of the column for which Euler’s formula is valid
(b) Buckling load at this length. [16]

7. Explain the design of the columns with reference to short, intermediate and long
columns. What are the various empirical relations to predict the failure of columns?

1. A cantilever beam of span L is subjected to uniformly varying loading , “w” per


unit width. Find the slope and deflection at the free end using double integration
method. Assume uniform flexural rigidity. [16]

2. Determine the cross section of a uniform strength simply supported beam of span
4m and is subjected a point load 10KN at the mid span

(a) Keeping the depth 200 mm constant


(b) Keeping width 100mm constant

3. Find the deflection at the center when a fixed beam of span L is subjected to a
point load P, at the center assuming uniform flexural rigidity, EI. [16]

4. Explain the procedure of finding the deflections in structural members using Cas-
tiglino’s theorem with the help of a perfect structure. [16]

5. An overhang beam supported at A and C with over hang portion CD is loaded as


shown in figure 5. Find the deflection using unit load method at the free end D.

7. A hollow cylindrical cast iron of 150mm external diameter and 15mm thickness,
3m long and is hinged at one end ,and fixed at other. Find

(a) The ratio of Euler and Rankine load


(b) For what length, the critical load by Euler’s and Rankine’s formula will be

1. Two cantilever beams AB and CD of equal length 4000 mm of equal flexural rigidity
EI=24×1012 N mm2 are fixed to a wall (AB above CD) in vertical plane horizontally
and are inter connected by a steel rod BD (E=200Gpa) to the free ends B and D.
Rod BD is 5000mm long and has a cross-sectional area of 300mm2 . Find the
deflection of cantilever AB at B due to a downward force of P=50 KN applied at
D considering the elongation of the rod. [16]

2. Define deflection with respect to beams.


Explain the behavior of deflection with respect to different materials,
Various cross- sections, for various spans and loads. Plot the curves for all the
cases. [16]

3. A continuous beam with one end fixed is supported at B and C and loaded as
shown in figure3. Find the end reactions as well as moments. EI = 2×1013 N/mm2

central buckling of 8mm.If the column is subjected to axial compressive load of 50
KN, determine

7. A short cast iron column is tubular in section having 250 mm external Diameter
and 200 internal diameter.
The column carries an eccentric load of 250 KN at a point distant 100 from its
axis. Determine the maximum tensile and compressive stresses. Also draw the
stress distribution. [16]

8. A beam-column of span L, which is fixed at one end and hinged supported at


the other end is subjected to axial compressive load P, at the ends followed by a
transverse load ‘Q’ at a distance ‘a’ ? from the fixed end

(a) Write the beam column equations considering buckling at section on both
sides of Q from hinged suppoort end
(b) Give the boundary conditions. [16]
