In Measure 4 of Movement III. Mountain Nightcap, the pianist is instructed to
Place paper over strings. Upon receiving this instruction, the pianist should
gently place one blank sheet of 8.5x 11 size paper over the strings of the piano.
He/she should place the paper with the 8.5 side perpendicular to the strings,
covering the strings from E3 and upward. Depending on the piano, the range of
coverage should be about an octave. The paper should stay in place until the end
of the piece.
