BUILDING STRONG COMMUNITIES

OUR MISSION

IS NOT ONLY POSSIBLE, THE RESULTS ARE

UNDENIABLE

Dear Friends, At the Valley of the Sun YMCA, we aim high when it comes to making a positive social impact within the communities we serve. Your generous support has allowed us to continue to provide valuable programs and services. One at a time, we are changing lives for the better. This past year has witnessed many milestones for our Association, from pursuing multiple new directions in Healthy Living, to diligently seeking growth opportunities, all of which will be highlighted in this report. But important as these accomplishments have been, they take a backseat to the individual lives that have been changed by our YMCAs collaborative programming and assistance. From infants to seniors and everyone in betweenthese are the people who rely on our programs and services. They are as diverse as their stories are remarkable, and wed like to share just a few of these with you. They are, after all, the best examples of whats possible at the Valley of the Sun YMCA. Thank you for your support and volunteerism, without which we could not pursue our quest for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Sincerely,

George Scobas President & Chief Executive Officer Valley of the Sun YMCA

Michael King Chairman Board of Directors Valley of the Sun YMCA

LIFE CHANGING

YMCA SOUTH MOUNTAIN YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

TYLER

A Promise Fulfilled

This very important effort of our YMCA can best be described as a Detention Alternative Program for juveniles who are directed by their probation officer to attend as an alternative to being detained by the juvenile justice system. Each teen (ages 14 through 17) is assigned a case manager who follows the participant through the program. Key curriculum topics are cognitive behavioral intervention, aggression replacement, social skill building and personal development, along with academic remediation. There also is a very important family component, as well as YMCA Family Nights, cultural and educational field trips, and community service activities. The obvious objectives are to increase the teens ability to succeed in life, and this program has seen significantly decreased probation violations within the sixmonth window of those completing the full program.

Having faced much adversity in his life, Tyler could have ended up just another statisticin jail or on the streets. Instead, he made a promise to his grandmother one summer morning as he stood in front of a judge, poised to choose one of two paths in life. And that promise that he would make her proud and turn his life into a success storywas one that the YMCA helped him to keep.

Like many disadvantaged kids, Tyler didnt have the support network necessary to make good decisions early in life, despite the support of his grandmother who had taken care of him for as long as he could remember. By the time he was a young teen, Tyler had dropped out of high school and was in trouble with the law. At this juncture, Tyler committed to turning his life around and was given the chance to prove it. He was put on probation and sent to the YMCA Youth Development Program in South Phoenix where he was enrolled in the Aggression Replacement Training curriculum. The mentoring, support and understanding he received through the program made a life changing impact.

After graduating from the YMCA Youth Development Program, he transferred to the YMCA Las Artes Program, where he earned his GED. He secured gainful employment and is a part-time staff member at the South Mountain YMCA. With his unique experience, he helps shape the futures of young men on probation while offering living proof that determination, hard work and the help of others can be life changing. But Tylers story is far from over. Soon, he will enroll in a local community college to study Culinary Arts, where he plans to turn his passion for cooking into a career as a chef. He aspires to one day own his own restaurant. Tyler thanks the many staff, volunteers and donors that have made it possible for him to turn his life around. Through quality YMCA programming, Tyler has been able to fulfill his promise and discover his potential in the process.
I am a strong advocate of the YMCA and always have been. The Power Ranch Family YMCA in Gilbert is just one example of how the Y is able to find a mutually beneficial way to partner with community businesses and other entities to ensure that health and wellness programs can be made available to the entire community. While the Valley of the Sun YMCA is celebrating its 120th year anniversary, in my opinion, they are just getting started. John Graham, President and CEO, Sunbelt Holdings

GOOD EXAMPLE

Y I-LEARN CENTERS

CECILIA

Todays realities of high school dropout rates and individual student learning needs and preferences require new, innovative solutions. The Y i-LEARN Centers are dedicated to providing all children educational opportunities through dynamic curriculum and core values, enabling students to maximize their success in liferegardless of geographic, demographic or financial circumstance. Our program consists of a supervised, onlinelearning alternative, offered on-site at Valley of the Sun YMCAs, and administered by accredited Arizona Virtual Academy. This unique program is designed for students who NEED or PREFER alternative education outside the traditional school setting, for whatever reason. By providing a successful alternative to education and a chance to attend postsecondary school or vocational options, we can have a significant impact on the future of the communities we serve. Annually, 360 students successfully participate at the Y i-LEARN Centers, and 40% get involved with other social service projects in their community.

Determination is Fashionable
Cecilia is 19 years old and recently graduated with a high school diploma from the Y i-LEARN Center, at the Maryvale Family Branch of the Valley of the Sun YMCA.

The only girl in a family of 8 children, she was the first to graduate high school. She believes she can be a good example to her younger brothers and hopes they will be motivated to finish high school as well. Her older brother did get his GED, but has not been able to find permanent work or the means to further his education.

Cecilia entered a west Phoenix high school as a freshman, and while there, she felt she wasnt able to get the education she desired. The students were disrespectful to the teachers and to the students who were there to learn, says Cecilia. The constant peer pressure to go down the wrong path is what made her decide to leave and come to the i-LEARN Center at the Y. I stuck with the i-LEARN Program for four years because I didnt feel the pressure that I felt at my public school. The classroom size was small, quiet and I could work at my own pace. I am now so motivated and excited for my future.

Cecilias goal is to attend either Collins College or the Art Institute. While attending college she wants to work in fashion retail, as she intends to study fashion design and fashion merchandising. She is currently seeking a Y ANGELS Scholarship to help her reach her goals. After graduating college, she wants to move to New York to work in the fashion industry. We have no doubt Cecilia dreams will become a reality.

I became a member of the Maryvale Y as a young girl participating in summer camps and sports programs and today my own children are active members. My personal level of involvement now extends to the Ys Hispanic/Latino Advisory Council. The Valley is fortunate to have a strong nonprofit organization serving the community in a holistic manner and with strong vision. The impact of the Y programs and services are life-changing for many members and their families. Belen Gonzalez, M.S.W., Program Officer, Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust

GUIDE, SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGE

YMCA BUILDING FUTURES MENTORING PROGRAM

KYRA, KAYLA, AND PHEBE

Our Building Futures Mentoring Program is one of our most rewarding services, and our kids are in desperate need of mentor volunteers. We have so many great kids, ages 6 to 18, who are at risk due to low self-esteem, social isolation, family problems, etc.who just need a friend, a role model,a person who can spend a little time sharing interests, listening, and ultimately raising a childs self-confidence and outlook on life. This FREE program is dedicated to matching deserving kids to adult mentors. In 2011, 203 pairings were matched and untold positive relationships were shared.

Threes Company

Single parent, Tandra, does the best that she can for her two girls, but working a fulltime job and caring for all their needs by herself is challenging. She wanted an additional role model for them someone who could encourage and expose her girls to new experiences, outside of her reach. Her daughter Kayla had low self-esteem from being bullied at school, which led to socialization and anger issues. Kyra, the youngest, has ADHD and as a result has trouble staying on task, especially at school.

Enter Phebe Warren, a volunteer for the Valley of the Sun YMCAs Building Futures Program, where caring adults train to become mentors to children just like Kayla and Kyra. As a child, there were special adults who took an interest in me and made a huge impression on me for the better, says Phebe. I thought if I can gently guide, support, and encourage just one child to discover their infinite strength within, I would feel blessed. Now, I have the opportunity to encourage two! After a number of months together, through the Building Futures Program, Mom reports both girls are happier and have grown socially, and says they both look forward to spending their individual time with Phebe each week. And that is most evident as you watch them compete for her attention when all three are together. Kayla, Kyra, and Phebe all heartily express their feelings of caring and companionship, and look forward to many happy days together.

A distinguishing quality of any great community is characterized by a high level of citizen volunteerism. The commitment to social involvement helps satisfy an important component very much needed for the overall quality of life in Arizona. The Valley of the Sun YMCA offers numerous programs for the benefit of thousands of citizens across a broad demographic throughout the valley. I am honored and privileged to be associated with the leadership of the YMCA as this remarkable organization endeavors to respond to the needs of our community. Duane H. Livingston, Corporate Vice President & Officer-Retired, Caterpillar, Inc

A NEW DIRECTION

YMCA LAS ARTES DE MARICOPA PROGRAM

JOHNELL

Artistic Talent was the Key

It doesnt take long to be impressed by Johnell once you meet. His friendly personality and modest demeanor draws you in, and you know you have met someone thoughtful and sincere.

Johnell came to the Valley of the Sun YMCA Las Artes de Maricopa Program after being displaced by Hurricane Katrina. His cousin, who Johnell claims completely turned his own life around for the good by joining the Y Las Artes Program, encouraged him. Johnell had dropped out of high school with minimal credits while having to care for his ailing mother. By his own admission, he was on a path to nowhere.

The Las Artes de Maricopa Program reaches out to at-risk adults who come from less fortunate backgrounds, and are struggling to overcome difficult circumstances. This innovative program, which graduates over 60 students each year, gives teens of Maricopa County a chance to participate in a variety of art projects and classes addressing academic, social and emotional needs, while pursuing a GED and advanced training which will lead to permanent employment or post-secondary education. These talented artists find a meaningful outlet for their artistic ability, which keeps them focused on overall goals. Participants receive job search support, leadership/team building skills and workshops, individualized assessment, and transportation assistance along with lots of encouragement. With the goal of always insuring pathways to opportunity for everyone, the Valley of the Sun YMCA, in partnership with Maricopa County, seeks to give disadvantaged teens and young adults a good chance at a successful start in life.

Being enticed to Las Artes by his talent and love for art, Johnell embraced a new direction and after lots of hard work and interaction with our dedicated staff, he successfully completed the program and acquired his GED. He now works in the facilities department of the Glendale/Peoria Family YMCA, and looks forward to raising his own family. The Y helped me have a chance at a better lifeand I now believe in myself.

The YMCA has always provided social service programs where anyone needing assistance is accepted, helped and respected for the individual they are. There is no organization quite like it in the world, and its longevity stands as testimony. Deborah Bateman, Executive Vice President, Director of Wealth Strategies National Bank of Arizona
