Definition
Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammation caused by excessive stretching of the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a broad band of fibrous tissue which runs along the bottom surface of the foot, attaching at the bottom of the heel bone and extending to the forefoot. When the plantar fascia is excessively stretched, this can cause plantar fasciitis, which can also lead to heel pain, arch pain, and heel spurs.

Cause
Plantar Fasciitis often leads to heel pain, heel spurs, and/or arch pain. The excessive stretching of the plantar fascia that leads to the inflammation and discomfort can be caused by the following: Over-pronation (flat feet) which results in the arch collapsing upon weight bearing A foot with an unusually high arch A sudden increase in physical activity Excessive weight on the foot, usually attributed to obesity or pregnancy Improperly fitting footwear Over-pronation (flat feet) is the leading cause of plantar fasciitis. Over-pronation occurs in the walking process, when a persons arch collapses upon weight bearing, causing the plantar fascia to be stretched away from the heel bone. With Plantar Fasciitis, the bottom of your foot usually hurts near the inside of the foot where the heel and arch meet. The pain is often acute either first thing in the morning or after a long rest, because while resting the plantar fascia contracts back to its original shape. As the day progresses and the plantar fascia continues to be stretched, the pain often subsides.

Treatment and Prevention

The key for the proper treatment of plantar fasciitis is determining what is causing the excessive stretching of the plantar fascia. When the cause is over-pronation (flat feet), an orthotic with rearfoot posting and longitudinal arch support is an effective device to reduce the over-pronation and allow the condition to heal. If you have usually high arches, which can also lead to plantar fasciitis, cushion the heel, absorb shock and wear proper footwear that will accommodate and comfort the foot. Other common treatments include stretching exercises, plantar fasciitis night splints, wearing shoes that have a cushioned heel to absorb shock, and elevating the heel with the use of a heel cradle or heel cup. Heel cradles and heel cups provide extra comfort, cushion the heel, and reduce the amount of shock and shear forces placed during everyday activities. Every time your foot strikes the ground, the plantar fascia is stretched. You can reduce the strain and stress on the plantar fascia by following these simple instructions: Avoid running on hard or uneven ground, lose any excess weight, and wear shoes and orthotics that support your arch to prevent over-stretching of the plantar fascia. If problem persists, consult your foot doctor.

HOW TO COMMUNICATE WITH SOMEONE WITH HEARING LOSS

According to a 2008 study (Kochlin, MarkeTrak VIII) 35 million Americans are hearing impaired, (thats 11.3% of the US population). Even though hearing aids could help 95% of these people, only about 25% wear them. When a friend or family member has a hearing loss, even if they are Janene Bauhofer, M.S. CCC-A Audiologist / Director wearing quality hearing aids, comPlacer Speech & Hearing Services munication is often challenging. Here are some tips you can follow to help facilitate better communication with those around you with hearing loss. Get their attention (say their name, tap them on the shoulder) before trying to communicate Do not shout Face them directly Dont hide your mouth, chew food, chew gum or smoke Speak clearly at a moderate pace Pause at meaningful places to give their ears a chance to catch up Avoid noisy backgrounds Reduce distance - do not try to carry on a conversation from the next room Give clues when changing the subject Use facial expressions Be patient and understanding You can also help your loved ones by encouraging them to make sure they are hearing as well as they possibly can. If they currently wear hearing aids, are the devices appropriate and adjusted for their needs? If they are reluctant to try hearing aids, encourage them to at least get a hearing evaluation (by a licensed audiologist) and then, if it is recommended, they can consider a trial period with hearing devices (California State law requires at least a 30 day trial period with a 100% refund if not satisfied) Be sure they ask their physician for a referral to an audiologist. Its important for them to feel comfortable and confident with their audiologist, who is essential for hearing success and will be a very important part of their life for many years to come. If you can, go with them to their audiology appointment.

At Placer Speech & Hearing youll find only experienced Audiologists who are genuinely concerned about you, your hearing health and your quality of life. Choosing the Right Health Club...

here are many different reasons for joining a Health Club. For many people those reasons include losing weight, relieving stress, restoring energy and vitality, and preventing illness. Making the decision to join is the critical first step in the process of achieving your goals, but choosing the right one is equally as important. Taking on a healthier lifestyle means you have to make some important changes in your mindset, your lifestyle choices, and your day-to-day activities. To succeed you will need guidance, support, and encouragement. Choose the health club where you can find all three. The right health club has a staff of fitness professionals to serve you and the equipment and programs to support your mission. Some of the most important factors to consider when selecting a Health Club are: Atmosphere (will your visits relieve stress or add more?) Cleanliness (is the club diligent about keeping things clean and sanitary?) Equipment (is it effective, efficient, and well maintained?) Classes & programs (is there a wide variety of offerings?) Staff (is the staff friendly, helpful, supportive and professionally certified?) Value (will you be renting a treadmill, or connecting into something that will bring meaningful change to your life?) With these things clear in your mind, go to www.healthclubs.com to see what quality clubs are in your area. Next, visit their websites to get an idea of what they have to offer. Then call to set up a time to get a tour of the facility; always pick the time for a tour that you would normally use the club to see what it will be like when youre there. During the tour you can evaluate the atmosphere, cleanliness, equipment, classes and programs, the staff, and the value of their membership. If it feels right, then join and be on the road to better health!

of draining hundreds of gallons of water off the roof and away from the foundation of your house. HOW T O REMODEL A BATHROOM

Do your homework and your new bathroom will shine!
So, you are going to remodel your bathroom? You have many choices ahead. Do you want chaos? Do you want smooth sailing? If you want a stress-free experience, then you need to be prepared, says John Ginty, owner of Gintys in Auburn. For starters, check manufacturer websites, head to your favorite book store or magazine rack to find research literature. Get ideas on what you want the new bathroom to look and feel like. During your research, if you see a product you like, save copies so you can show salespeople a visual of what you are thinking about. Before you head out to window shop, you need a basic idea of what you want, including: Budget for the project Color of fixtures Finish of faucets Style: traditional, contemporary, craftsman Product choices are plentiful. You should be John Ginty able to select what suits you from a full spectrum of pricing and quality. Knowledgeable specialty plumbing store personnel are going to be happy to give you explanations and recommendations on different products. How products function, benefits of one product over another, best value for your dollar...the more information you provide the salesperson the less confusing and time consuming your adventure will be. Dont be afraid to inform the salesperson of your budget amount. That is big information. Now you can be shown a product in that price category. You may need to be flexible and open to suggestions. Have options ready. Often adjusting priorities to obtain quality in the long run will save you money. Allow enough time for ordering. Dont put yourself in a rushed position, forcing you to purchase something just because it is available now. Have all products in your possession and inspected when the project is ready to start. Remember to always keep the communication line OPEN.

HOW TO BUY A MATTRESS

By Coy Miller
The Sleep Shop Auburn and Grass Valley, CA
o youre tossing and turning, your body aches, and you cant sleep. It could be time for a new mattress. There is no set guide for deciding when its time to buy one. But if yours is saggy, lumpy, more than seven years old, stained, or if you wake feeling tired and achy; it is time to go mattress shopping. The good news is that technology has given you more choices as to the type of mattress you might need. There are many types of mattresses and levels of firmness to choose from, but no true science to support the idea that one type of mattress is better than another. Everyone sleeps a little differently and has different likes and needs. The best mattress is the one that gives you the best nights sleep and it isnt necessarily the most expensive one. So, you need to take the time and try the mattresses. If you sleep on your side, you need to try them lying on your side. The way you sleep. There is no industry standard to define commonly used terms like firm or plush. So, wear loose clothing and take your time finding the firmness that you prefer. There are many manufactures and many types of mattresses that offer different support qualities. Tempur-Pedic is the leading manufacturer in Memory Foam mattresses. They conform and support you extremely well. They last a little longer than a conventional mattress and have less Motion Transfer. They are however, more expensive than the conventional innerspring mattress. Simmons Beautyrest and Sealy Posturepedic are still leading manufactures with various feels and support stories. There are also more Eco Friendly latex mattresses. They also, are long lasting with various firmnesses. Mattress buying information is sometimes confusing and the manufactures dont help. They give the same models different names from store to store, making comparison shopping difficult. That is where your local family owned mattress store can help. They are factory trained professionals that are not on commission. The Sleep Shop takes time to Fit you in the right mattress. We also use your budget, not ours, to make the choice. A mattress is an investment in your health and sleep. The Sleep Shop will always give you the best mattress for your money. We dont need to guarantee it. It is a fact.

HOW TO HIT A FINANCIAL PLANNING HOME RUN

The crack of the bat. The roar of the crowd as you round the bases. While hitting a homerun in the big leagues is nothing but the stuff of dreams for most of us, baseball can serve as a wonderful analogy for our quest for financial security. Reaching retirement, or home plate, is the goal. So step up to the plate, take a swing and round the bases with these general, yet timeless financial tips from Thrivent Financial. First Base Get on base by: * Creating an emergency cash fund with at least three to six months worth of living expenses set aside. This fund is essential to cover unexpected short-term expenses, like a major car repair bill or broken furnace. Keep the funds safe and accessible in a savings or money market fund, and be sure to replenish the fund later if you draw from it for an emergency. * Purchasing property insurance that protects you and/or your business against the loss of the property or income. Auto, homeowners and business owner policies fall under this category. * If your employer does not provide health coverage, buy your own. You cant afford to be without it. If you fall ill and have to be hospitalized without health insurance, you will quickly realize that the cost of not being insured far exceeds the cost of premiums, said Bruce Fear, vice president of Protection Products and Solutions for Thrivent Financial. Second Base As you head to second base youre approaching the middle part of your life and earnings potential. Second base is about protecting your income from a long-time illness or injury, or the death of a loved one. *Investigate disability income insurance. Its easier and cheaper to get when youre younger, and provides a benefit to replace a portion of your income if you become too sick or injured to work. It protects your most important asset your ability to earn an income. * Life insurance is also essential. It protects your loved ones against the loss of income they would experience if you

died. There are two main types term and permanent. Both help preserve the lifestyle of your surviving family members, but permanent can also allow you to accumulate a cash benefit. Third Base Third base is about protecting your hard earned dollars, the assets youve accumulated for retirement or other financial goals. As you head to third, consider what types of events can lower your probability of rounding third and heading home? Two key items you should consider: *Investigate medical insurance. While many companies provide medical insurance, once you retire, the coverage usually ends. And, if you arent eligible for Medicare youll need to consider individual medical insurance. If youre eligible for Medicare, keep in mind it wont cover all your health-related expenses in retirement. Supplemental insurance can cover the gaps. * Long-term care insurance should also be on your mind at this stage. The coverage can provide for necessary medical or personal care services provided outside a hospital setting, such as in a nursing home or your own home. Reaching Home Covering all of the bases over time will help you reach home plate--protecting your retirement plans. * Estate planning is a key element of retirement planning. This is the process of working with your legal, tax, and financial professional to arrange your financial affairs so that you have sufficient assets to meet your lifetime needs, while ensuring that your wealth will be distributed according to your wishes after your death. A stable, solvent retirement in which you can maintain the standard of living you enjoyed while you were working is the equivalent of hitting one out of the park, added Fear. With a little bit of planning, the goal can be within reach. Visit www.Thrivent.com to learn more about retirement savings, investing and tax planning.

Each funds investment per-formance depends upon how its assets are allocated across broad asset categories and applicable subclasses within such categories. Some broad asset categories and subclasses may perform below expectations or below the securities markets generally over short or extended periods. In particular, under performance in the equity markets could have material adverse effects on a funds total return if the fund has a significant allocation to equities. Therefore a principal risk of investing in asset allocation funds is that the strategies used and the decisions made will not produce the desired results. In addition, the performance of an asset allocation fund is heavily dependent upon the performance of the underlying funds in which it invests. As a result, this kind of fund is subject to the same risks as those faced by the underlying funds. Those risks include, but are not limited to, market risk, issuer risk, volatility risk, liquidity risk, investment advisor risk, loss of principal risk, as well as credit risk and interest rate risk. These and other risks are described in the funds prospectus. Investing in a mutual fund involves risks, including the possible loss of principal. The prospectus contains more complete information on the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses of the fund, which investors should read and consider carefully before investing. HOW T O SELECT T HE BEST CARE FOR YOUR LOVED ONE

Aging people are people in transition. The loss of family members and friends, a change in living arrangements or finances, retirement, the loss of driving privileges, even the death of a pet are lifestyle transitions that require the entire familys attention. Ideally, our elders will ask for our help during times like these, but, as family members have learned, this may not happen. In fact, one aging parent might cover for the other, or one aging spouse may decline assistance from the other because he or she feels ashamed and powerless. Know What to Look For Things may seem normal on the outside. Some changes are barely noticeable. Once in a while we all forget details or put things off, but when a pattern of neglect develops, it may be serious. Remember, dementia (mental deterioration) is not a normal part of aging. Sharpen your observational skills, and look for patterns of consistent neglect within the following contexts: Basic tasks difficulty in walking, dressing, talking, eating, cooking, climbing steps, or managing medications. Hygiene infrequent bathing, unusually sloppy appearance, foul body and/or mouth odor. Responsibilities mail is unopened, papers are piled up, checkbook is unreadable, bills are unpaid, bank account overdraft notices are accumulating, prescriptions are unfilled, phone calls arent returned, cooking pots and pans look burned, refrigerator interior has foul odor, food supply is low, home interior and/or exterior is unkempt, laundry is piling up, automobile has new dents. Health weight loss, changes in appetite, problems swallowing, fatigue, burns, black and blue marks (possible signs of falling), hearing loss (look for signs of lip reading and talking loudly), seems withdrawn without reason, incontinence (bet-wetting), spilling and dropping things (check carpet for stains), complaints of muscle weakness, insomnia or excessive sleeping, dehydration. Isolation lack of interest in outside friendships, activities, or hobbies, keeps curtains drawn day and night, has little access to transportation, lives in another city or state and lives alone. Attitude sadness, display of verbal or physical abuse, talk of being depressed and feelings of despair, abuse of alcohol or drugs, paranoia, refusal to communicate, unusual argumentativeness, a recent emotional or medical crisis. Cognitive functions consistent forgetfulness about where things are, getting lost while walking or driving, confusion, loss of reasoning skills, difficulty answering questions, inability to find the right word, use of repetitive words or phrases, severe personality changes, wandering, inability to recall names of familiar people or objects, inability to complete a sentence, forgetting how to use simple, ordinary things such as a pencil, forgetting to close windows, turn off the stove, and lock doors, loss of sense of time. If some of these warning signs are present, and you are beginning to question your clients ability to make choices and decisions, do not scare yourself and other family members into thinking that these are the early stages of dementia. Overreacting and jumping to conclusions create communication friction and unfounded anxiety. Open Up a Dialogue with Elderly Family Members Based upon your observations, if you have concluded that elder care issued demand immediate attention, its time to take the next step and talk about it. But let the caregiver beware. You are about to enter a potential minefield. Without knowing the most effective ways to initiate these very sensitive conversations with your elderly family members, the probability of them telling you to mind your own business, or telling you everything is fine when it is not, is almost guaranteed. Many older people are incapable of running their own lives and homes, but often are reluctant to admit they need help. Failing eyesight, memory lapses, confusion, fatigue, sadness, drug and other substance abuses and appetite changes can account for a diminished ability to manage a home. There are definite signs that indicate some kind of assistance may be necessary. If you need help with initiating this conversation with a loved one that you are worried about, call Help at Home Senior Care. We will be happy to help you evaluate the situation, walk you through the process of seeking help, and consider the options available to you and your loved one.

Help at Home Senior Care Toll Free 1-877-404-6636

Determining when it is the right time for a senior to move out of their home or to bring in outside help can be difficult. All of us want to remain in our own homes as long as possible. Most of us are fiercely independent! However, when someones safety is in jeopardy or if they are no longer driving, it may be time to consider moving them to an alternate situation. Some other areas to look at are: Does your loved one have mobility issues that make it difficult to get around? Are they still able to cook and prepare nutritious meals for themselves? Can they still operate a stove or oven? How do they do with their medication? Do they take it; do you need to remind them? How is their hearing and vision? Can they use a telephone?

so you or your loved ones can maintain an independent lifestyle!

All of our caregivers are carefully screened, trained, bonded, insured, drug tested and have completed a background check through the Dept. of Justice and FBI.

BASIC FIT SERVICE

Dynamic Saddle Height Dynamic Saddle Fore/Aft Dynamic Handlebar Position

WHAT TO EXPECT Every fit-whether youre a novice or experienced cyclist-starts with a brief interview between you and your trained Body Geometry FIT technician. The 2-3 hour Body Geometry FIT process that follows will help your fitter fully understand you, your riding and your bodys needs through: PRE-FIT INTERVIEW These questions allow your fitter to sharpen the focus of their flexibility assessment. By learning your injury and riding history, flexibility issues that will affect your saddle position, handlebar drop and stance width can be anticipated. 20-POINT FLEXIBILITY ASSESSMENT This series of evaluations provides an accurate picture of your flexibility and other physical attributes that will determine your final riding position. Assessments include foot structure, knee position, spinal curve, and hip flexion among others. SIDE VIEW ANALYSIS By assessing the side view of you on your bike, your fitter will establish a correct neutral position that is both powerful and comfortable by precisely adjusting seat height, handlebar height, stem length and cleat position. FRONT VIEW Analysis from frontal view will optimize your hip, knee and foot alignment for greater performance and balanced power delivery. Includes analysis of pedal and shoe placement and squareness on the saddle. FOLLOW UP After a week or so, our technician will call you to discuss the effectiveness of the adjustments and answer any other questions or concerns you many have.

WHY CHOOSE A SPECIALTY A UTOMOTIVE REPAIR SHOP?

We understand the frustration that comes from looking for the right automotive repair shop...
Its time to get your vehicle serviced. You look through the phone book or search the Internet and find so many choices. In life, choices are good, but often confusing. You call all the listed automotive shops and get so many different opinions, prices and ideas that your mind starts wondering. Who is right? Who is the best-qualified person to work on your vehicle? What kind of parts do they use? What about a warranty? Will it keep your vehicle under the manufacturers warranty? There are so many more questions, but Jimmy Mullenix, CEO/President of The Master Technicians, Inc. and Stacy Pedersen, our service manager, can help. They understand the frustration that comes from looking for the right automotive repair shop. Jimmy opened The Master Technicians in 1993 after working for Toyota dealerships for more than 23 years. He saw a need for customers wanting an independent specialty repair automotive shop. When opening, he knew that he was only going to specialize in Toyota, Honda, Acura and Lexus vehicles. For the past 19 years, those are the only vehicles Master Technicians has worked on. Jimmy and Stacy say: First things first, talk to your family and friends. Talk to the people who drive the same model vehicle you have. They are your most reliable source in recommending a repair shop. Then consider the following questions: Are the technicians ASE certified? What is the warranty? Do they give written Jimmy Mullenix and Stacy Pedersen estimates? How long have they been in business? Are the technicians factory trained? Will the work done maintain my manufacturers warranty? Do they use OEM parts? You may ask, What is the difference between someone who states they specialize on certain makes, but works on everything, and someone who specializes on certain makes and only works on those? An automotive repair shop like Master Technicians that specializes and only works on certain makes of vehicle has all the proper equipment, special tools and factory-trained technicians to do the work right, the first time. They have access to the manufacturers specifications and newest data. They have the special manuals. And since they only work on a few makes of vehicles, they probably know the strange sounds you may hear or the intermittent problem you may be experiencing. So the best choice may be an independent specialized automotive repair shop. Also, we have been told many times, that you have to return to the dealer to keep the manufacturers warranty up to date. You can choose to take your vehicle to any licensed repair facility that you are comfortable with. You do not have to return to the dealer for your maintenance items. With the tools we have given you, you should feel more confident about who you choose and trust to service your vehicle.
