Abstract of SEMINAR

The Standards and labeling program launched by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) specifies the Minimum Efficiency Performance Standards (MEPS) for energy consuming appliances and devices towards conserving precious energy. The labeling program of air conditioners involves star labeling the appliance manufacturers grade their appliances based on the level of energy efficiency it offers to the customers and also prominently display the BEE star label on the product. The star label ranges from 1 Star (minimum efficiency level) to 5 stars (highest efficiency level). For conservation of energy, BEE prefers customers opting for highest efficiency appliances as it saves energy for customers & country as a whole. The first point of contact for customers is the salesmen at showrooms, on whom they depend for getting required information on labeling. BEE realized this fact & has set up a Channel education program in India, to educate salesmen on AC star labeling concept & equip them with necessary sales tools to promote higher star labeled appliances.
The Government of India is committed to meet the growing energy needs at affordable rates required to meet the objectives of economic development. To deliver a sustained economic growth rate of 8% to 9% through 2031-32 and to meet life time energy needs of all citizens, India needs to increase its primary energy supply by 3 to 4 times and electricity generation capacity about 6 times. As a result energy service demand growth rates will keep on increasing because of accelerated industrialization, urbanization, and an emerging consumer society.BEE was set up in March 2002 under the provisions of Energy Conservation Act of 2001 to provide a legal framework for the governments energy efficiency initiatives in the country.

The Bureaus mission is to develop policies and strategies with a thrust on self regulation and market principles with the primary objective of reducing energy intensity of the Indian economy. From May 2006, Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory body under Ministry of Power launched Standard and Labeling Program of electrical home appliances including air conditioners. Under this program, for the benefit of general public, the appliance manufactures could voluntarily affix a Star Label on their appliances showing the level of energy consumption by the appliance both in terms of absolute values as well as equivalent number of stars varying from one to five, in accordance with BEE stipulation. The greater the number of stars on the label, higher the appliance energy efficiency and lower its electricity consumption. Affixing BEE star label has been made mandatory for Room ACs from January 2010.
Page 7
There is a wide variation in energy consumption of different makes of Air conditioners. This led to the continuous availability of inefficient Air conditioners in the market and purchase by consumers, leading to waste of precious and costly energy.
The energy labeling program sets out to correct this situation in the India Air conditioner market. Minimum efficiency performance standards have been prescribed by BEE and the appliances are rated on the basis of energy efficiency indicated by suitable number of stars on the name plate label.
The no. of stars can vary from 1 to 5. Higher stars indicate higher energy efficiency and more energy bill savings for the customers.

Energy labeling program is mandatory from January 2010 for the following products:
Frost Free Refrigerators Room Air conditioners Distribution Transformers Direct Cool Refrigerators General Purpose Industrial Motors Monoset Pumps Submersible Pump Sets Ceiling Fans Domestic Gas Stoves Stationary Storage Type Water Heaters Colour Televisions

COP Can Be Improved By Increasing Cooling Capacity Or Reducing Power Input Or Both Through Increasing Heat Exchanger Surface Area Of Indoor Unit & Outdoor Unit Optimising Air Flow Quantity Use Of High Efficiency Compressor & Fan Motors
Higher Stars Means Higher Incremental Cost Difference International Market: Average Rs.1,500 Per Star India Market As Of June08: Average Rs. 750 1,000 Per Star
Page 10
Efficiency of a room air conditioner is normally measured as Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER), which is the ratio of the cooling output, measured in British thermal units (Btu) per hour, to the power input (in Watts, and includes all inputs to compressor, fan motors and controls) to operate AC at standard rating conditions. This means a higher the EER, the more efficient the air conditioner is. At times, EER is defined a little differently. The cooling capacity instead of being denoted in Btu/hr is also denoted in Watts (1Btu/ hr = 0.293 Watts). Thus EER is represented as Watts/ Watts or as a number without any units.
Above chart give the brief idea about annual energy saving by using one star to five stars over Zero star. We take an one example If we are using 1 Tone of A.C. then the annual cost of it is 7383Rs .If we are use One star of A.C. instead of Zero star then we can save 616Rs, in the same way that if we are use Five star of A.C.then we can save 2311Rs, means 2311Rs are reduce from Zero star cost.

In May 2006, Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory body under Ministry of Power launched Standard and Labeling Program of electrical home appliances including Direct Cool and Frost Free Refrigerators. Under this program, for the benefit of general public, the appliance manufacturers could voluntarily affix BEE Star Label on their appliances showing the level of energy consumption by the appliance both in terms of absolute values as well as equivalent number of stars varying from one to five, in accordance with specific stipulation. The greater the number of stars on the label, higher the appliance energy efficiency and lower its electricity consumption. However, from January 2010, affixing BEE star label has been made mandatory for Frost Free Refrigerators, whereas, BEE Labeling is still in the voluntary phase for Direct Cool Refrigerators.

Promoter Card: Promoter Card is tool made for the sales manager to give the correct information of star labeling concept for customer understanding. Then by use of this promoter card sales manager clear all the basic information related to star rating. Also he tells how much electricity and money is saved by using more star.
