Genetic Engineering: Threat to Environmental Health

BY JUDY NELSON Today, global controversy rages over the planting of Genetically Engineered (GE) crops. The debate focuses on the potential health and environmental ramifications of Genetic Engineering (GE). No long-term safety studies have been Part 4 of an Ongoing Series
done on Genetically Engineered Organisms (GEOs). GE is the process of forcefully inserting the DNA of one species into the DNA of another species to create in it a trait foreign to it. GE cross-
es species barriers. It is NOT found in nature. It is NOT hybridization. In the case of current GE crops (corn, soy, cotton, canola, sugar beets, and alfalfa), the two primary GE traits created are tolerance of herbicides and production of pesticides. This means GE crops can be sprayed with glyphosate (Roundup) and they will not die, or they will produce in every cell of the plant a pesticide, Bt-toxin. In some crops, both traits have been created. To promote GE, the biotech industry
SUPER WEEDS AND SUPER BUGS Over time, GE crops have resulted in an increased use of herbicides and usage continues to escalate. According to 2004 USDA statistics, during the first 13 years of planting GE crops, 383 million more pounds of herbicides were used. From 2007-

(a component of Agent Orange) by 237%. In addition, the National Academy of Sciences found that farmers planting GE soy use two to five times more pesticides than farmers planting non-GE soy. Other environmental effects include the emergence of super
