Benefits of gas flame treatment: Higher treatment levels Low treatment decay rates Guaranteed no backside treatment No ozone No pin holing No material gauge restrictions Surface decontamination of film
A gas flame is the combustion between an oxidizing element (air) and a fuel. The fuel in this case can be Methane, Propane or Butane.

Keep in mind that different fuels have different mixture ratios to produce a proper flame which we call stoichometric values. Stoichometric Values Gas 1 1 1

The key to optimum treatment levels requires a basic understanding of the variables that produce a flame and how to apply it to control factors. To be able to maintain a consistent flame so that one can treat the substrate to its optimum level, you have to be sure that you have proper control over the air and gas mixtures.
The intensity and the volume of the flame applied to the substrate depend on the: * Air to gas ratio * Flame structure * Flame to material interface Primary Zone is the coolest zone. Secondary Zone (oxidized zone) is the hottest zone. The reason for having the proper air to fuel control systems is to assure there is sufficient oxygen to combust all the fuel gas chemicals in the supply mixture.

The Venturi system is the simplest and most economical control system. It is more than adequate when operating with a consistent gas supply at regular line speeds. It is slow to react to output changes and loses its accuracy over the turndown range.

Since the ERC is not a mechanical device, it does not suffer from the same deficiencies as the Venturi system. Line speed signals can be taken and fed into the control system to automatically match flame intensity with line speed.

This control is basically the same as an ERC system, but with the addition of an oxygen analyzer. The reasons you would want to consider this system are: If the unit is being installed in a location of high temperature and relative humidity changes, or if gas quality cannot be guaranteed, the oxygen analyzer will take a sample of the post mix and send feedback signals to the motorized valves in the gas train and make adjustments as necessary to stabilize mixture parameters set at Sherman treaters. It is important to set those parameters that exist on site with the customer so that the correct style of mixing system is selected.

Sizing of the cabinet control system is dependent on the type of material to be treated: Thermal Rating
Film & Polymer Products 5,000 BTU/hour/inch Metal, Foil & Film Perforation 10,000 BTU/hour/inch Paper & Board Coating 25,000 BTU/hour/inch
Sherman Burners The design of Sherman burners is proprietary. They are designed to provide a stable flame pattern which provides even treatment across the width of the substrate. To keep the integrity of the burner intact, water flow through the head of the burner is important in reducing burner temperature. This is done so that we can maintain accurate burner to substrate distance, which should be maintained between 5mm & 15mm.

Gas Flame Treater Station Orientation is much the same with gas flame stations as it is with corona, except that we have to consider heat paths. This simply means that the burners should be placed on top or at the side of the treater base roll. If you put a burner too far below the base roll, you will have trapped heat within the unit, damaging the substrate as well as the burner.

Uses Flame perforation of film was originally developed for medical dressings and has since seen an increase in popularity through the use of perforated film for bread wrapping and perishable food packaging. The market is considerable and now extends to other applications such as flower and horticultural wrapping, coarse filters and safety packaging for childrens products where quality is a requirement. Benefits The most significant advantage of perforation by flame is that the film tear strength is not affected by the perforation as the receding polymer forms a reinforcing rim around the periphery of a clean round hole. Also, as this is a non-contact process there is no film stress. While the initial cost of a flame perforation system may be slightly more than alternative methods, it is more than compensated for by the low energy, parts and maintenance costs but most significantly in the quality of the converted film. Process The process involves passing the film over a water-cooled backing roll, the chromed surface of which is dimpled to correspond to the required hold pattern. When the film passes through the flame, the film in contact with the roll retains its crystalline form and is unaffected. However, where there is a dimple on the backing roll the film heats, melts and recedes to form the hole. Hole size and pattern has guaranteed uniformity and can be anything upwards of 0.4mm diameter and from one to several holes per square inch.

Components The system is comprised of the dimpled roll, a Sherman burner designed to produce uniform holes against optimum converting speeds, and a Sherman gas/air mixing system that supplies constant fuel gases. The station can either be free-standing between unwind/rewind stands, or mounted on a slitter or into most converting lines. Substrate Specifications Most filmic substrates can be perforated in this manner although the most common is PP between 10 and 35 microns. Web width is relatively unrestricted, although the market indicates 800 to 2000mm as the norm. Printed and coated films can be perforated without loss of quality.
