ARCHITECTURE + ECOLOGY = ARCOLOGY

Arcology : A set of architectural design principles aimed toward the design of enormous habitats (hyperstructures) of extremely high human population density. Largely Hypothetical Contains all basic Architectural facilities. MINIMIZE INDIVIDUAL HUMAN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT Economically self-sufficient.

POWER,CLIMATE CONTROL ,FOOD PRODUCTION,AIR & WATER PURIFICATION ,SEWAGE TREATMENT:SELF-CONTAINED NO CONNECTION TO MUNICIPAL OR URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE -A CITY IN ITSELF AIM: To reduce Human Impact on natural resources EARLY VISION : by Frank Llyod Wright: Broadacre City Antithesis of a city and the apotheosis of the newly born suburbia. Critics said that Wright's solution failed to account for population growth, and assumed a more rigid democracy than the U.S. actually has. Paolo Soleri proposed later solutions, and coined the term Arcology'.

Visions- The Shimizu TRY 2004 Mega City Pyramid,Japan

14 times higher than the Great Pyramid at Giza, and would house 750,000 people. Issue: Tokyo's increasing lack of space. The design relies on the future availability of super-strong lightweight materials based on carbon nanotubes. Layers 1 to 3: residential, offices, etc. Layers 4 to 5: research, leisure, etc.

Transportation within the city would be provided by accelerating walkways, inclined elevators, and a personal rapid transit system where automated pods would travel within the trusses.

A Pod Car Housing and office space would be Rapid Mobility provided by skyscrapers suspended Solves the land crisis in Tokyo from above and below, and BUT, if one truss fails the whole attached to the pyramid's supporting structure with structure and 750,000 people will crash to the sea. nanotube cables.
Better protected from Tsunamis

The trusses would be coated with photovoltaic film to convert sunlight into electricity and help power the city. The city will also be powered by pond scum or algae.

Paulo Soleri
Coined the term Arcology. In his philosophy Arcology (architecture + ecology), Soleri formulates a path that may aid us on our evolutionary journey towards a state of aesthetic, equity, and compassion. Arcology Should: maximize human interaction; maximize access to shared, cost-effective infrastructural services conserve water and reduce sewage; minimize the use of energy, raw materials and land; reduce waste and environmental pollution; allow interaction environment Projects: ARCOSANTI with the surrounding natural

Arcosanti
Arcosanti is an experimental town that began construction in 1970 in central Arizona Social interaction + Accessibility Intended to hold 5,000 people.

The layout of the buildings is intricate and organic, rather than a North American style city grid, with a goal of maximum accessibility to all of the elements, increased social interaction and bonds, and a sense of privacy for the residents. roof designs that admit the maximum amount of sun in the winter and a minimal amount during the summer Arcosanti consists of a dozen mixed-use buildings constructed by 6,000 past workshop participants At present, the town is primarily an education center, with students from around the world visiting to attend workshops, classes, and continue construction..

TIMELINE: 1969: Arcosanti - The term Arcology was coined,Arcosanti was introduced. 1975-1977: Two Suns Arcosanti 1980: Critical Mass - The Critical Mass concept was introduced as an incremental phase to house 10 percent of the projected population of 5,000. 2001: Arcosanti 5000:Arcosanti 5000 features seven phases of truncated super apse structures.

TODAY: Arcosanti continues to operate under the Cosanti Foundation, a non-profit organization, which runs workshops to spread Paolo Soleri's ideas.

Mesa City
Project Mesa: quest for an environment in harmony with man. Mapped out on an imaginary landmass roughly the size of Manhattan, with a population of 2 million. Mesa City is centered around two nodes of peak density and activity: the theological complex in the north, and the higher learning center in the south. These nodes are connected by highways, underground bus tunnels, and the Axial Parks. Thirty-four villages will be grouped around civic buildings and shopping centers in clusters of five.

By roofing over the center of Manhattan with sky-lights and suspended gardens topping and spanning between the highest skyscrapers, one would approach the scale of things involved . . ..

Masdar City,Abu Dhabi-The Future is Coming?

Foster and Partners Masdar City believes Only use energy when youve exhausted design. Solar energy and other renewable energy sources, with a sustainable, zerocarbon, zero-waste ecology. The city is planned to cover 6 square kilometres (2.3 sq mi) and will be home to 45,000 to 50,000 people and 1,500 businesses, and more than 60,000 workers. Automobiles will be banned. The institute, uses 70% less electricity and potable water than normal buildings of similar size and is fitted with a metering system that constantly observes power consumption

TRY2025 The Environmental Island -GREEN FLOAT

The Botanical City Concept : blending into and living and growing harmoniously with Nature as part of the ecosystem. We can make a city, like a single plant, that embodies these principles.

An Environmental Island Floating on the Equatorial Pacific A city that grows just like a lily floating on the water. A city of the equatorial region where sunlight is plentiful and the impact of typhoons is minimal.

The City in the Sky: A City in the Sky with a Sense of the Sky and Greenery (City in the Sky: A Residential Zone with 30,000 Inhabitants) An area rising 700-1,000m above the equator. an energy-conserving compact city that is pleasant and peaceful, with no strong winds. temperature of about 26-28C year-round.

A Waterside Resort with a Sense of the Ocean and Greenery (Waterside: A Residential Zone with 10,000 Inhabitants) Living here raises the happiness index, not economic indexes. Human-Scale Distances and Configurations: An Urban Village That Grows Like a Lily Floating on the Water
