Graduate Internship: First Year Program Coordinator 10 Month Appointment 1 Year Funding 15-19 Hours Weekly (Flexible Schedule)

Mission of First Year Experience Program: The purpose and function of the First Year Experience at Whittier College is to help students successfully transition to college and develop dispositions of academic and social engagement. First Year Program consists of freshman orientation, academic links, and living learning communities. FYP is designed to help students succeed academically and socially, acquire a rich sense of value and relevance of college education, and develop a proactive approach to learning and fully understand their educational options and career opportunities FYP Components: *Faculty Mentoring Program * Freshman Writing Seminars * Various Events * Living Learning Communities * Peer Mentor Program * Academic Advising * Freshman Orientation Responsibilities Include (but not limited to): Programming Coordination/Host of First Year Events including: faculty/peer mentor, first year office, CAAS and Residential Life Outreach and Marketing to First Year Students Work with Faculty Mentors in Hosting Events for Students Attend Events Representing First Year Programs Student Advocacy Hold Office Hours for Students Advising of First Year Students Meet with Residence Life Coordinator of First Year Dorms Assist in Teaching of Provisional Student Course Work Closely with Athletic Coordinator and Provisional Program Coordinator Liaison for peer mentors in Freshman Writing Seminar Sections Administration Create Resource Guide for Students Check Student Schedules for Full Time Status Qualifications: Must be enrolled in a MA, M.S., or M.Ed. in student affairs (or related) graduate program. Show ability to work with diverse populations. Effective communication and interpersonal skills Knowledge of student development theory and practice The CAAS First Year Program Coordinator Graduate Internship strives to provide practical, supervised experience for the selected candidate at a private liberal arts college.
