Stewardship of the Good News

A friend of mine tells a story of her neighbor who owned a mean old pit bull. It ruined the furniture, bit off one of his fingers, gashed up his leg, and made the poor guy isolated from his family and friends. But he swore he could train the dog bought all sorts of books, choke chains, shock collars and prods he figured if he tried harder, the dog could be trained. But no matter how hard the guy tried, it just wouldnt happen. I think about this whenever I think about the hold that sin has on our lives. So many of us think if we do better and try harder, we can master the sin that clings so closely to our lives. So we try to learn more, analyze the problem, and strengthen ourselves against the temptation. But our sinful flesh can't be whipped into shape; it can't be reformed, it can't be made to do good, and trying to do so only results in failure and frustration. Instead of growing in knowledge, the Scriptures call for death. Instead of looking for strength, the Scriptures call for repentance. ...put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires. (Ephesians 4:22) We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. (Romans 6:6) This isnt about reforming ourselves, its about dying to ourselves. Its about repenting (turning away) from our sin and turning toward God to make us new. Romans 6:3-7 explains it perfectly, Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. May you know the death of repenting from sin, and the joy of resurrection as Christ makes you new. Freed ONLY because of Christ, ~Pr. Matthew
