An example for adding integers would be 1 + -2. Adding a negative is kind of like subtracting a positive. If you switched the signs it would become 1 - 2. First you could subtract 1 from 1 and that would equal 0. After that another 1 to subtract from 0. When you start going down from zero, you start finding negatives. For example -1, -2, -3 etc. When you subtract one from zero, you would have to go one down from zero which is negative 1. That would be your answer.

When you add 2 of the same number with opposite numbers you get 0. The reason you get zero is because the negatives and the positives would be canceling each other. At the end there would be no negatives or positives.

Whenever there is a negative and a positive together they can cancel each other. For example, in this

Whenever there is a negative and a positive together they can cancel each other. For example, in this picture the yellow is positive and the red is negative. The problem is 4 + -2. When added together you can cancel 2 out in the negative and 2 out in the positive. Then you can get the solution easily. The solution is 2.

When you add a negative with another negative you get more negative. For example in the problem below, it would be -3 + -2. That would equal -5.

The rule for adding numbers with different signs is a negative plus a positive equals more negative. For example, the problem below shows 6 + -3. Negative is kind of like subtracting so you would be subtracting -3 from 6 which equals 3. Another way you could do it is canceling out the negatives and positives. You would cross off one in the positive and one in the negative. You can keep doing that until you run out of positives or negatives. In this case, I ran out of negatives. The leftover amount is the answer. In our case, it is 3.

The rule for adding with the same numbers are: positive plus a positive equals more positive and negative plus a negative equals more negative. The example given below is a negative plus a negative. The problem is -5+-8. The easiest way to do this is first forget about the negative signs. You can add them like they are positive numbers and when you get the solution, you can add the negative to it. For this problem you would do 5 + 8 which is 15 and then add the negative for -15. That is the answer.
