Message from the CEO (SSTH)

Anything But Ordinary
Nepal and Switzerland are both beautiful small countries and both host a multicultural society. In my opinion, being small allows special attention to be paid to the individual. This empathy is the core of cross-cultural competence, the key competence in the 21st century certainly globally, but especially in the hospitality industry. What is of value to Nepal and to Switzerland is also true for GATE and SSTH. The global hospitality industry is huge and opportunities seem endless, students (and travelers) are often unable to cope with this that is why it is crucial to create an environment where students are enabled to take long term decisions for their life. GATE and SSTH are both small enough to care and big enough to lead. Each one of us is born an individual, unique of its kind. Driven by competition and economies of scale our society has sometimes chosen to standardize; we find restaurant chains, clothes stores and coffee shops around the world that seem to be alike, as if they would follow a common identity. The processes and the communication behavior of companies follow checklists, products are labeled, but while everything may be better, brighter and more varied, it is actually increasingly the same. Often todays companies and individuals continually compare themselves; the effect is that they become adjusted, but adjustment is just another word for exchangeability! It is the cultural difference that inspires us on our journeys, the vibrating hustle and bustle of an Arab bazaar, the hot and humid air saturated with the smell of Asian food, the sound of silence and the clear starry sky of the desert, or the special crunching of snow under foot on a cold winters day: these treasures are unique! Neither SSTH, nor GATE or you as an individual shall ever abandon yourself to an adjustment process; instead of, just by imitating someone else will never get you to the top - merely to the middle. Id like to encourage you to search for your special talents and gifts by bringing your talents into work and into society, to become valuable, inspirational and incomparable. By using the words of Paolo Coelho, Be crazy! But learn how to be crazy without being the center of attention. Be brave enough to live different. Best wishes for your journey!

Dr. Ursula Gehbauer Tichler Chief Executive Officer SSTH Swiss School of Tourism and Hospitality Ltd.

Nepals location between two neighboring economic giants, China and India, certainly lends enormous potential to the country in terms of tourism and hospitality. The industry has always been a leading source of foreign income and a medium to improve the lives of those involved. Considering strong regional growth and a partnership with Swiss hospitality education experts, there is no doubt that GATE will continue its growing leadership role in the Nepal hospitality education space. The hospitality industry requires leaders who are conscious of quality and serve with their heart. These leaders must also be wise and perfectly blend focus, up-to-date knowledge and skills with a down-to-earth attitude. All these qualities ensure a great future in the worlds largest and fastest growing industries. With the present global industry outlook, it is clear that the market is still in great need for hospitality professionals, hence promising a variety of global opportunities for successful graduates. You Turned My World Around!

My experience in coming to Malaysia and working at Holiday Inn and Intercontinental Hotel Groups as an intern has been good and challenging at times both being highly educational. It has been a great opportunity working with the best students of Natham, the oldest hospitality educational institution in Nepal. The GATE students, on the other hand, were not only good friends but also like a family. Working at the Holiday Inn and the Intercontinental Hotel Group has been a grand experience and a once in a lifetime opportunity where I am getting to live and be part of the Malaysian way of life for one year. Unlike the interns in the west, I am getting food and lodging provisions along with other benefits such as transportation facilities. Malaysia has been voted as one of the top 10 places in the world to visit by Lonely Planet for it being the destination that provides best value for money. Whereas people from all over the world spend thousands of dollars to come visit this must-see place, I deem myself extremely fortunate to be working here. Despite the language barrier, which can be quite tedious at times, the encouraging words of my professors from my homeland have helped me overcome the difficulties. Sanjeevan Acharya, GATE-SSTH 1st Batch Completed his internship at Holiday Inn, Glenmarie, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Well I am very grateful to the CEO for giving me a chance to be part of GATE where I learned to be independent, confident, to face the problems that we come across, and most importantly respect everyone. The best part about GATE is that it is focused on the practical knowledge too, which is very important for a BHM student. GATE organizes different functions such as the street cleaning program, welcome program, Food and Wine program, among others that motivate and encourage the students to illustrate their skills and explore their potentials. Working at Hotel Radisson Diplomat in Bahrain has been a wonderful experience. I feel lucky to get a chance to work and have the practical know-how about the hotel industry from here. The staffs here are very polite and extremely helpful by giving us the necessary information about different sectors of F&B department. I am very grateful to GATE for opening this door in helping me build my career in hotel management. Amrita Dahal, GATE-SSTH 2nd Batch Completed her internship at The Diplomat Radisson Blu, Bahrain.

You Turned My World Around!

Greetings from Dubai! I am very proud to be called the students of GATE because IHG Team and Great guests have enjoyed my service culture. I am very thankful to GATE as a team for making my future bright by providing practical knowledge which was the essence of all and it has always been fruitful to me. The study skills by Ms Deborah Koehler has been like divine words to me which helped me stand stronger and be 100% of myself what I am today. Furthermore, the prediction about me from the CEO came true. I was meant to work in Guest Relations and I did it. Thank you once again! Kind Regards, Maya Maharjan, GATE-SSTH 1st Batch Presently working at Intercontinental Dubai Festival City I couldnt help but laugh the first time I read the mission statement of GATE: Our Students are our most valuable assets. However, over due course of time I realized that this was not just limited to words and that GATE really is focused on fulfilling its goal. The stress on developing a healthy attitude has been the most important lesson I have learned and I know is what matters the most in the hospitality industry all over the world. Leadership opportunities and problem solving skills are the key features to attain success at GATE, which has managed to create its own niche in the short span of time since its inception. I feel proud to say that I am a GATE product and feel confident to face whatever challenges may come my way. I now strongly believe that leaders are those who dare to lead. I hope GATE upholds its values and retains its pinnacle position in imparting knowledge on hospitality management in the future. Bibek Poudel, GATE-SSTH 1st Batch President ECO Club Nepal Completed his internship at Holiday Inn, Glenmarie, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Testimonials
For us at Maiti Nepal, we feel that GATE has actually been a GOLDEN GATE for it has opened its Gate to give opportunity for the most deprived and stigmatized girls who feel that they are also dignified human beings despite what happened in their lives. Now they are confident to say that they can survive in this world because of what they got from GATE. Anuradha Koirala President Maiti Nepal At a time of crisis when nothing seems to be functional in Nepal and thousands of youths leave for abroad in pursuit of good quality education; GATE has turned the wheel around. Under the able leadership, GATE has successfully provided quality education and exemplary discipline of international standards. I look forward to hearing more success stories in the future. Congratulations! Santosh Shah President, Todays Youth Asia Panelist, United Nations Youth Advisory Panel When I visited GATE, I could feel that this is not just another college but more. Students not only learn for exams, but for life; they not only learn how to run a hotel business, but get the true spirit of hospitality and responsibility; they not only learn to care for their customers, but also for the society, nature and future of Nepal. What has been achieved during the first two years of GATE is highly impressive and shows what is possible with diligence, passion and a positive spirit Yes, Nepali can! Sara Elmer Lecturer in Global History at ETH-Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich Board Member of Swiss Nepali Society

From the very first day I met a young Nepalese man in Dubai, some 5 years ago. I advised him to serve his nation, and I foresee Nepal, one day, in our life time, as a peaceful, democratic and emerging nation and economy. You must serve this nation and consider me as your mentorfather. Khem, to the truest sense of the word, devoted his endless energy in promoting this sea of understanding and creating a new breed of managers in hospitality industry, with GATE. This is the foundation of a graceful hospitable people, I admire and I pray for GATE and for all Nepalese people, a bright future. My heart and soul is with you for your endeavors. 28 | GLOBAL ACADEMY OF TOURISM & HOSPITALITY EDUCATION

It was a real pleasure when I was in Nepal to spend some time at the GATE College itself. It is a hive of activity, striving to provide world class hospitality training to a wonderfully committed group of students. The CEOs enthusiasm and international experience is infectious and spreads across the College. From what I have witnessed the training is first class and as result, the students can expect to contribute to furthering Nepals reputation at home and abroad. The reason I love supporting GATE is that it challenges the conventional educational norms. It is not satisfied to do it like others, it is willing to try new activities that encourage individual accountability, provides leadership opportunities. It intentionally experiences where the students get their hands dirty with practical actions that can alert their perception ofthemselves and of the others. GATE students are expected to examine their self perception and cultural norms to do things differently in order to become global citizens that are change agents wherever they choose to be. Deborah Koehler Founder and Managing Director SEBO International Pvt. Ltd. Global management coach and cross culture trainer for global financial giant, military, government personal and on many medias.

The phrase Special Relationship is often used to describe the exceptional. Having the opportunity to be associated with the GATE is truly a privilege. It is a forward thinking organization, one that possesses great vision, character, values and integrity. Under the leadership of Founder (Khem Lakai), GATE has tremendous possibilities. How far reaching, as far as the east is from the west. Also the Mission of GATE speaks volumes: The care for the learning of our most valuable asset (our students) and to help them realize their true potential. It is the kind of commitment that raises the standards bar within the hospitality industry. True professionals desire to be part of such leadership thinking, for it motivates and inspires greatness.
