What can we learn from the Chicago teachers fight back?

As the Chicago Teachers Union prepares to strike as early as September 10th, their fight back is blazing a new path of resistance to the growing resistance the broad attack on public education! The recently elected leadership has turned the anger of Chicago educators into a formidable, well-organized, and empowered rank-and-file movement. By creating ties with students, parents, and community, Chicago educators are demonstrating to the people of Chicago that teachers interests are the communitys interests! Some of the highlights include:
Occupied a predominantly black and Latino elementary school with students and parents set to fire all the current teachers as part of its turn around. Developed an informational booklet that demonstrates to parents and community members how a better teachers contract ensures better learning conditions for the their children. Have made enormous efforts to spend resources on cultivating rank-and-file power at all Chicago public schools. Recently held an 18,000 rally in downtown Chicago on Labor Day. Voted to strike against concessions! Over 98% of the membership that voted in favor of the strike (with nine out ten members participating). Won a huge concession from the powerful Mayor Rahm Emanuel that includes hiring back 477 teachers to teach Art, foreign language, and other electives. At the recent A.F.T. Convention in Detroit, CTU was the only local to stage a protest inside the convention hall against Joe Biden and his and Obama's support of Race to the Top. Has voted to strike as early as September 10th if their demands arent met!
