Loss of $1 million to

Childrens Natl Medical Center

Local HIV/AIDS service providers have criticized
the Health Resources and Service Administrations
decision to cut more than $1 million in grants that fund
case management and other programs designed to
prevent the spread of the virus.
Childrens National Medical Center had received
$1.1 million in annual grants from HRSA under Part
D of the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources
Emergency (CARE) Act that specically supports
women, children and families living with HIV. Metro
TeenAIDS and the Sexual Minority Youth Action League
are among the local groups that received HRSA funds
through the Northwest Washington hospital.
From my perspective, that $1.1 million was meant
to keep HIV-positive women, children and families
connected to medical care, Adam Tenner, executive
director of Metro TeenAIDS, told the Blade. He

Police called for violent
domestic disturbance
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
A journalist who previously worked
as a tech reporter for the Gannett News
Service and his roommate were arrested in
their Arlington apartment on Aug. 28 on a
charge that they allegedly were attempting
to manufacture methamphetamine,
according to Arlington police.
The journalist, Leonard Fischer, 44, and
his roommate, William Hudgens, 31, were
charged and released on bail after police
obtained a search warrant, searched their
apartment, and conscated chemicals and
equipment said to be used for the manufacture
of methamphetamine, police said.
On or about Aug. 27, 2012, law
enforcement ofcers responded to 801 N.
Monroe Street, Apt. 305, Arlington, Virginia, in
reference to a violent domestic disturbance,
says a police afdavit in support of a search
warrant led in Arlington Circuit Court.
Once inside the residence,
ofcers observed, in plain view, items
consistent with the manufacturing of
methamphetamine to include a triangle
glass beaker on the kitchen counter along
with a possible fuel source on the oor
below it, the afdavit says.
A list of items conscated in the
search, which was also led in court,
includes caustic chemicals such as sodium
hydroxide, phosphoric acid, suspected
sulfuric acid, propane cylinders, and
assorted Pyrex dishes.
Residents of three oors in the complex
were evacuated for safety concerns, a police
statement says. Police said later that some of
the residents had to nd lodging in nearby
hotels until investigators with the Arlington
Fire Department determined it was safe for
the residents to return to their apartments.
The police afdavit says that during
questioning by police, Fischer and
Hudgens accused each other of being
responsible for attempting to manufacture
methamphetamine in the apartment. The
afdavit says Hudgens told police he was
attempting to move his belongings out of
the apartment at the time police were called.
It says Fischer holds the lease to the
apartment and that Hudgens had been
staying there for several months. Court
records state that Hudgens had no xed
address at the time he rst appeared
in court. Both men were ordered to
undergo alcohol and drug screening and
testing before their next scheduled court
appearance on Oct. 5.
New York gay blogger Kenneth Walsh
reported in his blog Kenneth in the (212)
that Fischer is a former tech reporter for
Gannett and that his byline frequently
appeared in the Gannett-owned
newspaper USA Today. Last week, Fischers
LinkedIn page stated he still worked for
Gannett. However, Fischer stated in a
court form seeking to determine if he
could afford to retain a lawyer that he
currently works as a freelance journalist.
Walsh told the Blade that a mutual
friend who went to Indiana University with
Fischer told him that Fischer is gay.
Sad to see yet another gay man felled
by meth, Walsh wrote in his blog.

Crane running
for insurance
commissioner post
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
A former judge is poised to potentially
become the rst openly gay person
elected to statewide ofce in Delaware.
Mitch Crane of Lewes will square off against
incumbent Insurance Commissioner Karen
Weldin Stewart, Paul Gallagher and Dennis
Spivack in the Democratic primary on Sept.
11. The winner will face Republican Benjamin
Mobley and Libertarian Eisenhower David in
the general election.
Then-Insurance Commissioner Matt
Denn hired Crane, who was a district judge
in Chester County, Pa., from 1982-1987, as
a regulatory specialist for the Delaware
Department of Insurance in 2007. Stewart
succeeded Denn, who is now the lieutenant
governor, in 2008. Crane stepped down in
Jan. 2011 after he said he realized that his
now opponent would not continue what he
described as the pro-consumer programs
that he said her predecessor put into place.
A few months later some progressive
members of the party asked me to run, he
noted. I was hesitant about running against
an incumbent Democrat also a woman,
but I was convinced it was important that
the insurance commissioner be a consumer
advocate. And if I didnt run, someone less
qualied or less able to do the job properly
would run and either beat her or lose and
we would be in the mess that were in now.
Cranes maternal grandparents became
active in the civil rights movement in
the 1930s he was 16 when he and his
grandmother were arrested in 1963 during
a protest outside a Brooklyn, N.Y., hospital
that was under construction. Crane later
coordinated three buses that brought the
West Chester, Pa., contingent to the 1963
March on Washington that Bayard Rustin,
the openly gay adviser to Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr., who grew up in the southeastern
Pennsylvania city, organized. The University
of Denver expelled him shortly before he
was to have graduated in 1968 because he
led a student rights movement.
I come from a family of activists
my parents and my grandparents in
almost every aspect of the human rights
movement, said Crane. I wasnt brought
up to become a rebel in the 60s. I actually
was just following my family tradition of
ghting for other people.
Crane invited Rustin to speak at a local
high school and West Chester University
while he was on the West Chester Borough
Council in 1981. He also spearheaded the
effort to name a park next to his home in
honor of the civil rights activist after his
death in 1987. Crane became a permanent
Delaware resident in 2002, but he remained
involved in the effort to name a new West
Chester high school in honor of Rustin.
Crane later played a role in the effort to
add sexual orientation to the states non-
discrimination laws. He was president of
the Barbara Gittings Delaware Stonewall
Democrats in May 2011 when state
lawmakers passed a civil unions bill that Gov.
Jack Markell signed into law. The statute
took effect earlier this year, but the governor
told the Hufngton Post last month that he
expects state lawmakers could debate a
same-sex marriage bill as early as next year.
Cranes opponents did not immediately
respond to the Blades inquiries about
whether they support either Delawares civil
unions law or nuptials for gays and lesbians.
Crane, who entered into a civil union with
his partner of 14 years in February, told the
Blade that he feels marriage is a federal
issue that Congress and the courts should
ultimately decide. He described the repeal
of the Defense of Marriage Act as the most
important issue.
To upset the applecart by herding
legislators who are brave by voting for it
is not worth a word, he said, referring to
what he said is a lack of support among
Dover lawmakers for a same-sex marriage
bill. Crane stressed that adding gender
identity and expression to the states non-
discrimination laws should remain a top
legislative priority going into 2013. Im
saying this and people arent going to like
what Im saying, but quite frankly youve
got to pick your ghts and youve got
to do whats helping people. And thats
always been my attitude. Fighting a battle
you know you cant win is only good if you
cant win something less than that.

GLAAD hires actor Wilson Cruz
NEW YORK The LGBT communitys most notable media watchdogs made
two big announcements this week.
The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, which took on a new
leader earlier this year in Herndon Graddick, released its sixth annual Network
Responsibility Index, rating television networks on LGBT images in programming.
The 2012 iteration of the survey shows that among broadcast networks The CW
remains at the top of the pack with more positive LGBT primetime programming
hours than any other channel, also leading the pack with the highest percentage of
LGBT people of color among those portrayals. ABC and Fox switch spots to rank
at second and third respectively, NBC holds onto fourth place in concentration of
positive time on screen, and CBS holds onto last place among the networks. It is
also the only network to receive a failing grade.
This week the group also announced the hiring of actor and activist Wilson
Cruz, who before appearing in recent movies Party Monster and Hes Just
Not That Into You, gained attention in 1994 portraying the openly gay Rickie in
the teen drama My So Called Life, which launched the careers of several other
Hollywood notables, including Claire Danes and Jared Leto,
Throughout his career, Cruz has been a strong advocate for LGBT Americans,
said Graddick about the former GLAAD board member.
David Koch breaks with GOP on marriage
TAMPA, Fla. This week, one of the billionaire brothers backing Mitt Romney
and congressional Republicans told Politico I believe in gay marriage.
When pressed by the Washington-based political publication, billionaire David
Koch conrmed he differed with both the Republican Partys anti-gay platform
and its nominee, Mitt Romney, on the issue.
Well I disagree with that, Koch said about the party plank that opposes
extending marriage rights to same-sex couples, and backs an amendment to the
U.S. Constitution barring states from recognizing such unions.
Babeu wins sheriff primary race
FLORENCE, Ariz. Gay former U.S. congressional candidate and conservative
sheriff Paul Babeu has defeated his GOP primary opponents, according to the
AP, and will likely serve another four-year term as the top cop in Pinal County,
despite controversy.
Babeu made headlines when a former boyfriend outed the then-Romney
campaign Arizona co-chair, alleging Babeu threatened to have the Mexican
national deported if their relationship were to be revealed. After an investigation,
the Arizona attorney generals ofce cleared the tough-on-immigration sheriff of
wrongdoing last Friday.
Mass. must provide prisoner gender reassignment
BOSTON A federal judge has made history ruling that the state is responsible
for providing gender reassignment surgery for a trans prisoner serving a life
sentence for murder.
In his ruling, Ronald Reagan appointee Judge Mark Wolf who initially
ordered the state to provide the prisoner with hormone therapy in 2002 found
that surgery is the only adequate treatment for Michelle Kosileks serious
medical need.
The court nds that there is no less intrusive means to correct the prolonged
violation of Kosileks Eighth Amendment right to adequate medical care, Wolf
wrote in his 126-page ruling, according to an AP report.

Accepts partys nod
for president, attacks
Obamas record
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
TAMPA, Fla. Republican presidential
candidate Mitt Romney ofcially accepted
his partys nomination for president
last week while pledging to honor the
institution of marriage if elected.
During his speech before the Republican
National Convention, Romney alluded to
marriage in a brief portion of his speech
that apparently was intended as a broader
signal of support to social conservatives.
As president, I will protect the sanctity of
life, Romney said. I will honor the institution
of marriage, and I will guarantee Americas
rst liberty: the freedom of religion.
As with references to marriage in
speeches earlier in the week from GOP vice
presidential nominee Paul Ryan and former
U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, Romney didnt
explicitly say that his vision for marriage
excluded same-sex couples. But Romneys
opposition to marriage equality is well
known, including his support for a U.S.
constitutional amendment banning same-
sex marriage throughout the country.
Romneys reference to marriage could
also be a knock against President Obama,
who has come out in favor of marriage
equality, dropped defense of the Defense
of Marriage Act in court and advanced an
array of pro-LGBT policies while in ofce.
But for the most part, Romneys speech
consisted of narrating personal accounts
of his family and business career, laying
out a basic vision for where he wants to
take the country and criticizing Obama for
his decision-making over the past three-
and-a-half years.
Romney articulated a ve-step plan
that he said would create 12 million new
jobs although he offered few details for
each of these steps in his proposal.
The plan involved 1) making America
energy independent by 2020 through
expanding oil, coal and gas and renewable
domestic energy production; 2) giving
parents the option of school choice and
every child a chance in the education
system; 3) forging new trade agreements
and punishing countries that cheat in
trade; 4) cutting the decit to put the
country on track to a balanced budget;
and 5) encouraging small business growth
by reducing taxes and regulations as well
as repealing health care reform.
Romney also called out to voters who
supported Obama in the 2008 election
but had become disaffected with his
presidency because of the stagnant
economy, saying, I wish President Obama
had succeeded because I want America
to succeed. But his promises gave way to
disappointment and division.
Tonight Id ask a simple question: If you
felt that excitement when you voted for
Barack Obama, shouldnt you feel that way
now that hes President Obama? Romney
said. You know theres something wrong
with the kind of job hes done as president
when the best feeling you had was the day
you voted for him.
In an apparent attempt to reach out
to women voters, Romney noted that
women are now more likely to start their
own businesses and devoted a signicant
portion of his speech to talking about
the important role his wife Ann Romney
played in raising their family as well as
the bid of his mother, Lenore Romney, to
become a U.S. senator in 1970.
I can still hear her saying in her
beautiful voice, Why should women have
any less say than men, about the great
decisions facing our nation? Romney said.
I wish she could have been here at the
convention and heard leaders like Gov.
Mary Fallin, Gov. Nikki Haley, Gov. Susana
Martinez, Sen. Kelly Ayotte and Secretary
of State Condoleezza Rice.

Race to become rst out
gay senator heating up
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
CHARLOTTE, N.C. U.S. Senate
candidate Tammy Baldwin expects to
campaign with President Obama in
Wisconsin between now and November
as her bid to become the nations rst
openly gay Senator heats up.
The Washington Blade asked Baldwin
during a press conference following remarks
she delivered at the LGBT Caucus meeting
at the Democratic National Convention
about whether there were any plans for her
to campaign jointly with the president.
Baldwin said those talks are absolutely
happening but declined to make any
specic announcements. A spokesperson
for her campaign later told the Blade that
Baldwin fully expects to campaign with
the president.
I just came from last week campaigning
with the rst lady in Milwaukee, on Sunday,
campaigning with Vice President Biden in
Green Bay, and I have every expectation
that it is going to be a battleground contest
in Wisconsin for both the U.S. Senate and
the president, Baldwin said. So, I look
forward to the opportunity to work with the
president in any matter I can.
She noted that she and Obama
campaigned together during the 2008
election.
I joined him onstage at the University
of Madison campus, Baldwin said. I
think there were 30,000 folks who came to
that rally. It was very exciting. I trust well
have more like that, but I dont know what
the schedule is going forward, so, well
see it as it comes.
Baldwin, whos running against
Republican Tommy Thompson for the
open U.S. Senate seat in Wisconsin, faces
a tough ght, as polls show Thompson
with a signicant lead.
Campaigning with Obama could
boost Baldwins numbers in addition to
beneting Obama because the state
could be a battleground in the Republican
presidential election with Wisconsin
congressman Paul Ryan on the Republican
ticket as vice presidential nominee. Last
month, White House Press Secretary
Jay Carney said he had no campaign
announcements when asked if the
president would campaign with Baldwin.
The Obama campaign on Tuesday didnt
immediately respond to the Blades
request for comment.
Asked to respond to the approval of
a constitutional amendment banning
same-sex marriage in North Carolina
and whether that gave her pause about
holding the convention in the state,
Baldwin recounted the passage of a
similar ballot measure in Wisconsin during
the 2006 election and predicted views
would change just as President Obama
evolved and come out in support of
marriage equality.
I do know in terms of the issue and
how were moving just like weve seen
the president evolve we heard him talk
about what it took to change his heart and
move him, Baldwin said. We are seeing
that across this country. They estimate
and I dont know where they get these
numbers that two percent of Americans
changed their views on marriage equality.
We know that had the amendment come
up in Wisconsin this year, or next election
cycle, it would have had a different
outcome. And I think thats also going to
happen in North Carolina and elsewhere
in the country. Weve got to keep working.
Weve got to keep educating.

In first, all 50 states send gay
representative to convention
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
CHARLOTTE, N.C. Hours before the
Democratic National Conventions opening
session was called to order Tuesday
night, a record number of more than 550
LGBT delegates, alternate delegates and
convention committee members met as a
recognized convention caucus.
Valerie Jarrett, White House Senior
Adviser to the President; Kathleen
Sebelius, Secretary of the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services; and Tammy
Baldwin, the lesbian Democratic House
member from Wisconsin whos running
for the U.S. Senate, were among a parade
of elected ofcials and Democratic Party
leaders to speak at the caucus meeting.
While greeting each of the speakers with
loud applause, many of the LGBT delegates
and convention participants said the big
news of the day was the size of their caucus
and its growth over the past two decades.
History is being made this week, said
Minnesota gay delegate Rick Stafford,
who serves as chair of the LGBT Caucus.
Theres over 550 LGBT Americans who
are an ofcial part of the 2012 Democratic
National Convention.
Stafford said that for the rst time all 50
states have sent at least one or more LGBT
delegates to a Democratic convention.
Please let everyone know we are here
to be seen and heard, said Brandon
Marcus, an out gay member of the North
Carolina House of Representatives and
one of 12 LGBT delegates and alternates
from the Tar Heel state.
Marcus, who said he was proud to
welcome his fellow LGBT convention
participants to his home state, said he was
certain that the cause for LGBT equality in
North Carolina advanced this year despite
the fact that voters passed Amendment
1, which added a provision to the state
constitution banning same-sex marriage.
The cause was not lost with
Amendment 1, he said.
Jarrett said efforts by the LGBT
Caucus members and their supporters
throughout the country on behalf of LGBT
rights made it possible for the Obama
administration to move forward with
the presidents legislative and executive
ofce initiatives on LGBT equality.
With your efforts we have been able to
move our country forward, I believe, in a
fair way that respects everybodys rights,
she said. And thats something thats the
foundation of our country and its something
we cant take for granted. We have to ght
for it and make our country the more perfect
union we know it can be.
Jarrett received a prolonged, standing
ovation when she added, And I believe
we are a more perfect union than we were
four years ago.
Sebelius said the repeal of the Dont
Ask, Dont Tell law, which banned gays
from serving openly in the military, and
the passage by Congress of the Matthew
Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes
Prevention Act, which authorizes the
federal government to prosecute anti-
LGBT hate crimes, were an important part
of the presidents legislative proposals.
But she said that due to opposition from
the Republican-controlled House, most of
the Obama administrations achievements
on LGBT rights came from directives from
the president and federal agencies and
departments under the presidents control.
Non-discrimination polices in federal
housing programs, hospital visitation rights
for same-sex partners, a ban on employment
discrimination for transgender people in
the federal workforce are among many of
the Obama administrations LGBT-related
initiatives, members of the LGBT Caucus said.

Assault victim posted
YouTube video
describing attack
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
The U.S. Department of Justice
announced on Aug. 29 that a 36-year-
old Michigan man pleaded guilty in
court in Detroit to a federal hate crime in
connection with an assault against a man
he believed to be gay in March 2011.
But the DOJ and Detroit police have
yet to publicly disclose whether local
authorities investigated the case between
the time the attack took place on March 7,
2011 and the time federal ofcials charged
the perpetrator with a hate crime on Aug.
10, 2012.
The DOJ announcement says Everett
Dwayne Avery admitted he struck the
victim in the face while the two were
customers in a gas station convenience
store in Detroit, causing the victim to suffer
a fractured eye socket and other facial
injuries. Documents led by prosecutors
in federal court say Avery shouted anti-gay
names at the victim during the assault.
The case represents the second time
federal authorities have invoked the
Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr.
Hate Crimes Prevention Act to prosecute
someone for an anti-gay hate crime.
Congress passed and President Obama
signed the measure into law in 2009.
The act authorizes federal authorities to
prosecute hate crimes based on a victims
sexual orientation or gender identity if
local authorities are unable or unwilling to
prosecute such a case or if local ofcials
invite federal prosecutors to become
involved in the case.
Hate-fueled incidents have no place in
a civilized society, said Thomas E. Perez,
Assistant Attorney General for the DOJs Civil
Rights Division. The Justice Department is
committed to using all the tools in our law
enforcement arsenal, including the Matthew
Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Have Crimes
Prevention Act, to prosecute acts of violence
motivated by hate.
Spokespersons for the DOJ, the
FBI, which investigated the case, and
the Detroit police department said
they could not immediately determine
whether Avery had been apprehended
and prosecuted by the police before
federal ofcials led the hate crime
charge against him on Aug. 10.
The DOJ also did not say why it chose
not to disclose the victims name. The
victim, Justin Alesna, 23, posted a YouTube
video describing the anti-gay attack less
than two weeks after it happened. More
than 3,400 people have viewed the video
since its posting, according to YouTube.
Alesnas assertion in the video that the
convenience store clerk and at least two
customers in the store refused to come
to his aid and the clerk refused to call
police were widely reported by news
media outlets in Detroit, including the
local CBS afliate.
DOJ spokesperson Mitchell Rivard said
the FBI and federal prosecutors became
involved in the case after being contacted
by the statewide LGBT organization
Equality Michigan. Rivard said local law
enforcement ofcials supported the
federal involvement because Michigans
hate crimes law doesnt cover hate based
on someones sexual orientation.
Rivard said he couldnt immediately
determine whether local police and
prosecutors attempted to charge Avery
with a felony-related assault even though
the state lacks a hate crimes law that
covers anti-gay hate crimes. A Detroit
police spokesperson didnt immediately
respond to queries from the Blade to
determine whether police opened an
investigation into the case.
Under the federal hate crimes law, Avery
faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in
prison. His sentencing is scheduled for
Nov. 28 in the U.S. District Court for the
Eastern District of Michigan.

their speeches to attendees at the Time
Warner Cable Arena on Tuesday.
Castro made a reference to marriage
equality when reciting a list of issues
supported by Democrats, but opposed
by Republican presidential nominee Mitt
Romney. The GOP candidate is against
same-sex marriage and has endorsed a
Federal Marriage Amendment.
When it comes to getting the middle
class back to work, Mitt Romney says,
No, Castro said. When it comes to
respecting womens rights, Mitt Romney
says, No. When it comes to letting
people marry whomever they love, Mitt
Romney says, No.
Castro continued that Romney also says
no to expanding access to health care for
all Americans, but noted Romney originally
said yes to that an allusion to the health
care reform Romney helped pass into law as
the Massachusetts governor. Castro added,
Gov. Romney has undergone an extreme
makeover, and it aint pretty.
The San Antonio mayors speech was a
hit among attendees at the convention,
who held up signs reading Opportunity
and Oportunidad as he spoke.
Michelle Obama delivered a speech
that was more personal, emphasizing
her husbands commitment to his family
despite her concerns upon taking ofce
about the sacrices about what being
president meant for their two daughters.
But today, I have none of those worries
from four years ago about whether Barack
and I were doing whats best for our girls,
Michelle Obama said. Because today, I
know from experience that if I truly want to
leave a better world for my daughters, and
all our sons and daughters then we must
work like never before, and we must once
again come together and stand together
for the man we can trust to keep moving
this great country forward, my husband,
our president, President Barack Obama.
Michelle Obama also hit on her
husbands support for LGBT rights
during her remarks when she spoke of
his commitment to the people of diverse
backgrounds, saying Barack knows the
American Dream because hes lived it
and he wants everyone in this country to
have that same opportunity, no matter
who we are, or where were from, or what
we look like, or who we love.
The rst ladys speech was widely seen
as successful. Attendees at the convention
held up slim, vertical signs reading, We
love Michelle Obama and cheered as
she spoke.
Jerame Davis, executive director of the
National Stonewall Democrats, noted
Michelle Obamas speech when talking
about how the Democratic convention
strongly contrasted with last weeks
Republican hate-fest in Tampa.
First lady Michelle Obama was
inspirational and gave us a glimpse of the
love she has for her family, Davis said.
She is the heart and soul of the rst family
and that was on full display tonight.
In a historic development, the 5,963
delegates to the convention approved
a Democratic platform that for the rst
time includes a plank supporting marriage
equality. Language in the platform also
rejects the Defense of Marriage Act and
afrms support for the Employment Non-
Discrimination Act.
New Jersey Mayor Cory Booker, a co-
chair of the platform committee, said
prior to the nal approval the manifesto
embodies the principles of the Democratic
Party, including the notion that individuals
should be able to pursue the American
dream regardless of, among other factors,
whom they love.
This platform of big and practical
ideas sets forth an emboldened pathway
toward the historic hope which has driven
generations of Americans forward,
Booker said. It is our most fundamental
national aspirationthat no matter who
you are, no matter what your color, creed,
how you choose to pray or who you choose
to love, that if you are an American rst
generation or fth one who is willing
to work hard, play by the rules and apply
your God-given talentsthat you should
be able to nd a job that pays the bills.
Delegates approved the platform by a
loud voice vote when Democratic National
Committee Chair and Los Angeles Mayor
Antonio Villaraigosa asked for yays and
nays to accept the manifesto. No one
was heard voicing objection to the platform
when Villaraigosa asked for the nays.
In addition to the high-prole speeches
at the end of the evening, at least four
openly gay speakers were among those
delivering remarks from the podium.
Democratic National Committee Andrew
Tobias, Democratic National Convention
Committee CEO Stephen Kerrigan and
Service Employees International Union
Mary Kay Henry and U.S. Rep. Jared Polis
(D-Colo.) delivered remarks.
A primetime speaking slot was awarded
to Polis, who is slated to become the most
senior openly gay member in the lower
chamber of Congress upon the start of next
year after Reps. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and
Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) nish their nal
terms as U.S. House members.
Polis wasnt shy about talking about his
sexual orientation during his speech. He
declared he was gay among other things
upon taking the stage, saying, My name
is Jared Polis. My great-grandparents were
immigrants. I am Jewish. I am gay. I am a
father. I am a son. I am an entrepreneur.
I am a congressman from Colorado. I am
always an optimist. But rst and foremost,
I am an American.
The rst openly gay parent to serve in
Congress, Polis mentioned his partner,
Marlon Reis, by name while emphasizing
respect for diversity for people who may
identify as LGBT and others who hold views
that are either conservative or progressive.
So tonight, I dont just ask my fellow
Americans to respect my relationship with
my partner Marlon and my role as a father
to our son, Polis said. I also ask them
to respect the Christian family concerned
about decaying moral values and crass
commercialism. I ask them to respect the
difcult decision of a single mother to
bring a child into this world, because of
her heartfelt beliefs.
Polis mentioned some of Obamas pro-
LGBT initiatives that he said demonstrates
the presidents understanding that progress
can only be achieved by working together.
It is why he repealed Dont Ask, Dont
Tell, so that no person is prevented from
serving the country they love because of
whom they love, Polis said. And it is why
Barack Obama became the rst sitting
president in American history to show his
personal support for same-sex marriage.
Tobias, who spoke earlier in the day,
said his speech marked the fourth time
hes addressed a Democratic National
Convention and noted each time hes
made an address he talks about two
things: money and equality.
Praising Obama for his work over his
rst term, Tobias said the administration
has dramatically improved the lives of
millions of LGBT Americans and at no
cost to anyone else.
Tobias also offered a personal anecdote
about being gay as a way to demonstrate the
tremendous progress that has been made on
LGBT rights in the past few decades.
In college, I thought I was the only guy
in the world who liked other guys, Tobias
said. Later I found there was someone
else like me, our 26-year-old resident
tutor. He and I never talked about it at the
time. No one talked about being gay back
then. People killed themselves over being
gay. Tragically, some kids still do.
Tobias later revealed the identity of that
resident tutor, saying he wed another man at
a wedding just eight weeks ago, where love
that was unspeakable nearly a half-century
ago was celebrated by hundreds of people
straight and gay, surfers and senators.
In a way, it was a wedding that married
my two topics money and equality
because that young tutor had grown up
to become the chairman of the House
Financial Services Committee: Barney
Frank, Tobias said.
Kerrigan, who was charged with
managing the convention, made no
explicit mention of his sexual orientation
or LGBT issues during his speech and
instead talked about the opportunities at
the convention and access through digital
media. Neither did SEIUs Henry, who
focused on labor issues while criticizing
Romney, saying Time after time, working
families have paid the price for Mitt
Romneys success.
Many other speakers throughout the
evening also hit on LGBT rights as they
praised President Obama. They include
U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine, who
said Obama kept his commitment to
fair treatment for LGBT Americans.
Recognition of Obamas push to end
Dont Ask, Dont Tell came in addition
to Polis from Massachusetts Gov. Deval
Patrick; platform committee co-chair and
rst woman to reach the rank of three-
star general in the Army, retired Lt. Gen.
Claudia Kennedy; U.S. House candidate
Tammy Duckworth; Chicago Mayor Rahm
Emanuel; Maya Soetoro-Ng, Obamas
sister; and actor and former White House
ofcial Kal Penn.
Richard Socarides, a gay delegate
from New York City and former adviser to
President Clinton on LGBT rights, said the
developments at the convention added up
to a historic night for the LGBT community
and a great night for our party.
Our platform plank was adopted plus
every speaker seemed so proud to be
the party of all America, including us,
Socarides said. I thought we are part
of this partys vision of America.
Gay speakers, issues pervade Dem convention

said that his group had a very modest
contract with Childrens. This is critically
important to our city and our country as we
implement a national HIV/AIDS strategy
that encourages HIV positive people to
get care.
SMYAL executive director Andrew
Barnett told the Blade his organization
received an annual grant of slightly under
$60,000 from Childrens that funded a care
advocacy program that connected young
people newly diagnosed with HIV to the
hospital. Unfortunately with this grant
ending, we are no longer able to provide
this service directly, he said. We
continue to work with Childrens Hospital.
Theyve been a great partner of ours.
HRSA spokesperson Elizabeth
Senerchia conrmed to the Blade that
her agency reopened the Part D grant
application process as a way to ensure
funding dollars reach areas with unmet
needs as the National HIV/AIDS Strategy
outlines. Med Star Health Research
Initiative in Hyattsville will receive $350,000
annually over the next ve years to provide
Part D services to D.C.
Senerchia acknowledged that this gure
is a decrease in funding, but she noted that
the city will receive $30,987,607 this year
through Part A of the Ryan White CARE
Act that funds HIV prevention efforts in
urban areas. Washington will also receive
$20,138,009 in 2012 through Part B that
funds state AIDS Drug Reimbursement
Programs and other initiatives to support
those with the virus. Senerchia further
noted that Whitman-Walker Health,
Family Medical and Medical Counseling
Service, the Carl Vogel Center, Unity
Health Care, Inc., the Howard University
Hospital Center for Infectious Disease and
Research and MedStar Research Institute
received $2,996,116 this year to fund
primary care services under Part C.
HRSAs Project Ofcer for D.Cs Part
A and Part B grants has reached out to
discuss the decreased Part D resources
with District ofcials and we are working
with Medstar to ensure continuity of
program and client transitions, said
Senerchia.
City ofcials were quick to note that
this decrease in funding will not impact
D.C. governments efforts to combat
the citys HIV/AIDS epidemic. Brendan
Williams-Kief, spokesperson for D.C.
Councilmember David Catania (I-At
Large,) expressed concern over the cut.
Any reduction of federal grant funding
is unsettling, particularly if it impacts such
important programs, he told the Blade.
We will work with Childrens and the
Department of Health to determine the
impact of the reduction and potential next
steps.

OMalley, Gray slated for marriage fundraiser
Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley and D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray are among those
scheduled to attend a fundraiser for the group defending the states same-sex
marriage law at gay Democratic lobbyist Steve Elmendorfs Logan Circle home
on Oct. 2.
The event will take place less than three weeks after a Marylanders for Marriage
Equality fundraiser in New York City that OMalley is scheduled to attend. Former
Republican National Committee Chair Ken Mehlman, director John Waters,
comedian Sandra Bernhard and actresses Julianne Moore and Sarah Jessica
Parker are among those who will co-host the event.
A Hart Research Associates survey in July shows that 54 percent of Marylanders
would vote for the same-sex marriage law in the November referendum.
Elmendorf told the Blade that the host committee and additional attendees
will be announced in the coming weeks.

No arrests in Mt. Vernon
double shooting
A month after two gay men were shot
on East Chase Street near the Belvedere
Hotel, police have not arrested any
suspects. Joseph Alexander Alex Ulrich,
Jr., 40, was killed in the Aug. 10 attack.
He had recently moved to Baltimore
from Gettysburg, Pa., to start a career in
photography. The other victim, Lawrence
R. Peterson, 56, remains hospitalized
and is slowly recovering from multiple
surgeries. Peterson, who owns the Empire
Inn, is regarded as a neighborhood leader.
Det. Jeremy Silbert of the Baltimore
Police Department had described one of
the assailants to the Blade as a black male of
average height with a medium build who was
wearing dark clothes and a black baseball
cap. He described the second person as
a short, heavy-set black female who was
wearing dark clothing and a skull cap.
Following the shootings, police could
not identify a motive and said there is no
evidence that the attack was a hate crime
based on sexual orientation,
In an email to the Blade this week, Det.
Silbert stated, Detectives are continuing
to investigate this incident. Anyone with
information is asked to contact Homicide
Detectives at 410-396-2100.

and was regarded as Ehrlichs closest aide,
issued a fundraising appeal on behalf
of Marylanders for Marriage Equality,
the coalition that is defending the Civil
Marriage Protection Act in a referendum
in November.
In the e-mail to supporters on Aug. 29,
DiPaula wrote: As a lifelong Marylander,
it was a great honor to serve [Ehrlich]
and the citizens of the state I love I
am not alone among Republicans in my
support for marriage equality. Former Vice
President Dick Cheney and former RNC
Chairman Ken Mehlman do, too.

Renegade DDOT staff
twists construction rules in
anti-growth precedent
Here we go again. The D.C. government
shoots itself in the foot by bending the rules to
placate a tiny number of noisy naysayers and
doesnt appear to realize the damage done to
its own economic health. Is there not a doctor
in this house of pain?
This time the controversy involves a city
regulatory agency singlehandedly modify-
ing standard development project construc-
tion permit protocols on the y, justied
only by a spurious interpretation of agency
regulations and the tossing around of a few
bureaucratic buzzwords.
The dismaying result is a precedent-setting
anti-development literal roadblock initially
affecting two new residential-retail projects
currently in early construction phases along
the vibrant 14th Street corridor in Northwest
Washington. Projects that Mayor Vincent Gray
and D.C. Council members publicly touted
as a concrete example of the citys revitaliza-
tion at a groundbreaking ceremony only a few
months ago.
Regulatory rebelliousness by agency appa-
ratchiks at the District Department of Transpor-
tation (DDOT) and a lack of effective statutory
compliance oversight by the mayors ofce will
cost the city millions of dollars in lost revenues
in this single instance. Also in jeopardy is the
economic viability of future development
projects, the availability of nancial investment
sources wary of unpredictable delays resulting
from inconsistent city decision-making and
the willingness of commercial enterprises to
commit to local retail storefronts subject to an
uncertain completion schedule.
All this is the result of a mayor and local
elected ofcials not keeping an eye on city
government permit purveyors.
Once a local development rm manages
the maze of design and zoning approvals and
survives myriad protests by the usual small
cadre of citizen complainers, it gets down to
the nitty-gritty of construction planning. A key
component is negotiating a Trafc Control
Plan that identies public safety preparations
associated with sidewalk closings and cover-
ings or barriers, delivery truck access, trafc
ow and temporary use of curbside parking
spaces. Elaborate plans are cooperatively
prepared between developer and agency,
guided by uniform policies and past practices
at prior sites.
Although different locations require modi-
ed planning solutions, the basic rules are
well known and long established. Minor short-
term construction inconvenience in a compact
urban environment is a given, with the objec-
tive of protecting pedestrians and mitigating
impacts for both residents and businesses the
shared goal.
JBG and Level 2 Development, both
well-regarded local development rms with
recognized conscientious performance con-
structing major projects and builders of ad-
jacent residential-retail properties with more
than 400 combined units of housing across
from one another at 14th and U streets, re-
cently began nalizing construction planning
with DDOT. Thats when the agency issued
a devastating restriction unknown to have
been similarly imposed.
Both rms did not suspect that they would
be denied the regulatory standard of week-
day delivery access to their sites from 7 a.m.
to 7 p.m. Agency managers, however, took
the extraordinarily irregular step of eliminat-
ing early morning and end-of-day access
cutting the timeframe by half. The deci-
sion is cloaked in a questionable regulatory
evaluation without regard for common sense
solutions or the massive costs to the city or
the developers. No insurmountable practical
safety benet is at stake.
Its tantamount to telling a coffee shop that
donut deliveries have to wait until midday.
This decision will cost the city more than $4
million in lost tax revenues of various types and
suddenly increase construction costs by nearly
$3 million. It will also lengthen construction in-
convenience by a full six months.
Both projects endured lengthy building
conguration protests by chronic objectors.
DDOT has now initiated a subjective regu-
latory review requirement without statutory
authority or benet of approved agency
rulemaking to ensure that these edicts are
equitably applied. Rogue regulators have
instituted new obstacles and opponent pro-
test entitlements citing only vague mantras
of citizen empowerment and best prac-
tices as justication.
Its a nakedly plain paean to vociferous pro-
testers eager to extract a pound of esh from
developers they were unsuccessful in thwart-
ing legislated by apparently opinionated
bureaucrats.
The ongoing ramications will be big,
broad-based, and bring barriers to future
growth and local revenues. A responsibly
managed city cannot conduct business
this way.
Adult supervision instilling respect for the
law and fairness for local businesses benet-
ing the citys future is needed not the fancies
of functionaries.
Its time to get busy, Mayor Gray, and start
cracking a few eggheads.

A few ideas, from tweaks
to major renovation
By JOHN KLENERT
Thomas Jefferson once wrote, I am not
an advocate for frequent changes in laws
and constitutions, but laws and institutions
must go hand in hand with the progress of
the human mind.
Back on Christmas Eve, 1973, the residents
of the District of Columbia were granted lim-
ited self-determination under a bill entitled
the D.C. Home Rule Act. It set up the structure
under which the city government operates
today: an elected mayor and 13-member City
Council. Prior to this, the city was controlled in
various fashions by both House and Senate
D.C. Committees and then in 1967 by a mayor
commissioner and nine-member Council ap-
pointed by the president of the United States.
All forms of local, state and federal gov-
ernments constantly reform or adjust them-
selves to current conditions. We very seri-
ously need to determine if our current form of
city government is due for a major renovation
or simply needs some minor tune ups. Either
way, our LGBT community has both a right
and an obligation to participate in the discus-
sions that desperately need to take place.
What follows are simply some ideas that have
been proposed around town. You choose to
agree/disagree and/or add your own voices
to the future.
LEGISLATIVE BRANCH
Our city now has more people than
Wyoming and is close in population to Ver-
mont. The Wyoming bicameral legislature
has 30 senators and 60 representatives. Ver-
mont has 30 senators also and 150 represen-
tatives. Powers denitely spread out among
many people. Ours are concentrated in only
13 elected legislators with our city budget ex-
ceeding the two states.
Should our eight Wards be represented
by more than one person? Would two or
three or four from each Ward be better for the
city? Should the number of At-Large council
members be increased to eight or 10 or even
set up as an upper house making D.C. a bi-
cameral legislature?
EXECUTIVE BRANCH
Is there a need for an elected vice mayor
who would become mayor if that ofce
becomes vacant due to death or resigna-
tion? This creation would thus eliminate taking
the Council chair as a replacement and the
need for costly special elections and the mu-
sical chairs that we are now in the midst of. If
there is to be a vice mayor, should this person
run as a part of the mayors team or as an inde-
pendently elected ofcial?
JUDICIARY BRANCH
Right now, this all-important third leg of
a democracy is for all practical purposes
non-existent for the people of the District
of Columbia although we will soon begin to
elect our attorney general with limited local
responsibilities. Each of our judges is named
by the president and conrmed by the Sen-
ate. Presently, our own Del. Eleanor Holmes
Norton does have some nominating privi-
leges but this can be revoked in the blink of
an eye. Some of the ideas being talked about
include the president simply accepting judi-
cial nominations from both the mayor and
the City Council and submitted for Senate
approval. Other recommendations have the
president and the Senate removed from the
process entirely. All judges would be nomi-
nated by the mayor and approved by a super
majority of the Council. Others suggest that
regardless of the nomination method, that
every judge either serve for only seven or 10
years before being subject to a vote of con-
dence by the D.C. electorate and, if success-
ful, continue for one additional term.
ADDITIONAL ELECTED OFFICES
One of the biggest complaints often
heard is the lack of elected positions. Wyo-
ming elects its secretary of state, state audi-
tor and state superintendent. Vermont elects
its secretary of state, state treasurer and
state auditor also. So besides increasing the
number of people on the D.C. City Council,
should we also elect our own secretary of the
District, city comptroller and members of vari-
ous other boards?
INCREASED VOTING PARTICIPATION
METHODS
Again, several ideas have been tossed
about for years, foremost has been term lim-
its for all Council members and the mayor.
Should everyone be limited to two or three
terms but allow them to run for different ofc-
es? For example, Ward One Council member
serves no more than 12 years but is free to run
for At-Large Council slots.
Regardless of the term limits, questions
and proposals, should future Council mem-
bers drop the facade of being part-time
city employees and accept their elected
jobs as full-time employees? Right now,
only the mayor and the City Council chair
have this requirement.
Should there be primary runoffs of the
top two winners instead of the current win-
ner take all approach? Should voters self
identied as independents be allowed to
vote in all primary elections? Should non-
D.C. citizens but residing here be able to
vote in our elections? (In Rehoboth Beach,
non-resident property owners can vote and
run in city elections.)
Should the ANCs be abolished or given
additional responsibilities or should individual
towns be established within each of the eight
Wards each having a small town council/town
manager model?
FEDERAL ISSUES
It is still a national embarrassment that
more than 600,000 citizens are denied a real
voice in the national legislature. Certainly legal
minds can create a way to end this disgrace
and meet constitutional approval avoiding
Scalian thunderbolts. In the meantime, should
D.C. request two delegates to the U.S. House
as well as one to the U.S. Senate? In the latter,
he/she would be able to sit on a committee
and vote as in the U.S. House.
Should the president and the mayor share
control over the D.C. National Guard instead
of the presidents sole control he has today?
Should Congress have simply 30 calendar
days to review our legislation instead of the 30
days in session method?
Should all federal lands outside the monu-
ment core and the National Zoo be handed
over to the District of Columbia?

Despite lack of federal law,
some protections exist
By R. SCOTT OSWALD
Although federal law is, in many ways, de-
cient in protecting LGBT empl oyees against
employment discrimination, there are many
interesting new developments around the
country in the eld of LGBT employment dis-
crimination law.
Sixteen states, plus the District of Colum-
bia, ban employment discrimination based
on sexual orientation and gender expression/
identity. Five states ban employment discrimi-
nation based on sexual orientation, but fail to
address gender discrimination/identity.
In 2011, Connecticut, Massachusetts and
Nevada extended their protections to pro-
tect transgender persons. The New York As-
sembly passed the Gender Expression Non-
Discrimination Act or GENDA on April 30,
2012. These new laws carefully dene gender
identity. For example, the Massachusetts law
denes the term as, any persons gender-
related identity, appearance, or behavior,
whether or not that appearance, identity, or
behavior differs from that traditionally associ-
ated with the persons physiology or assigned
sex at birth. These states joined 13 other ju-
risdictions with similar protections.
Glenn v. Brumby is a federal ruling that will
affect state government employees. On Dec.
6, 2011, the United States Court of Appeals
for the Eleventh Circuit, which handles cases
originating in Florida, Georgia and Alabama,
ruled in favor of equal protection rights for
transgender state government employees.
Vandy Beth Glenn, a state employee diag-
nosed with Gender Identity Disorder, lost her
job when she informed her supervisor that she
was about to undergo a course of treatment
to transition from male to female.
The Court of Appeals ruled that although
there is no federal law that specically prohib-
its discrimination based on gender identity,
trans persons are protected by Title VII of the
Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits sex
discrimination. Title VII disallows discrimina-
tion based on gender-based stereotypes, and
applies in the case of trans persons who do
not comply with these stereotypes that their
supervisors are attempting to enforce in the
workplace. In April 2012, the United States
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
came to the same conclusion in the case of
Macy v. Holder, which involved Mia Macy, an
employee of the federal Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco, and Firearms.
Although federal law is lacking, U.S. Rep.
Barney Frank, along with 203 co-sponsors, re-
introduced the Employment Non-Discrimina-
tion Act or ENDA on March 30, 2011. Sen.
Jeff Merkley introduced the bill in the Senate.
ENDA has been introduced in some form
every year, except for one, since 1994. ENDA
would create a clear, nationwide policy regard-
ing LGBT employment discrimination.
ENDA, like the employment discrimination
provisions in Title VII, would apply to employ-
ers with 15 or more employees. Religious insti-
tutions and the military are exempt. The Sen-
ate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions
Committee held a hearing on ENDA on June
12, 2012.
Despite the piecemeal legal enforcement
against discrimination, many companies have
voluntarily enacted policies to protect their
LGBT employees. The Human Rights Cam-
paign reports that 87 percent of Fortune 500
companies have voluntarily implemented
non-discrimination policies that apply to LGBT
employees. However, a comprehensive feder-
al law is necessary to protect these employees
when the employers choose to violate their
own protocols.

Listening to Melissa Etheridges 4th Street Feeling, out this week on her home
label for 24 years, Island Records, one might agree with the dynamite rock legends own
description of the sound as organic.
After adopting a more pop, adult contemporary sound in the middle of the last decade for
singles like her cover of Greenwheels Breathe, the Oscar and two-time Grammy winning
icon has returned to a nostalgic country blues sound that would ow well into a playlist with
other artists she says she once played on her Chevy Impalas 8-track in the 70s while driving
the strip the album was named for in her hometown of Leavenworth, Kan.
Breaking barriers rst by coming out in the early 90s and then rocking a Janis Joplin
tribute live at the Grammys, bald from radiation and chemotherapy during breast cancer
treatment, Etheridge returns to where she was born and raised for her eclectic 11th studio
album, while experimenting with some new elements as well like the banjitar featured
in the rst single Falling Up.
Etheridge, who will be honored at the National Museum for Women in the Arts starting
today as part of the exhibition Women Who Rock, will bring her 4th Street Feeling tour
to Bethesdas Strathmore Music Center on Nov. 2.
This next year, 2013, Ill have been in the professional music business for 25 years,
Etheridge says of the National Museum for Women in the Arts exhibit when she sat down
with the Blade to discuss her new album, the tour and the election year. Its nice to be
honored. To be part of a wonderful community, the wonderful quilt of artists in our society
that have brought forth the human experience.
Etheridge has always been known as a confessional musician, but her personal woes
have been on display in a new way with her high-prole 2010 split from actress Tammy
Michaels and the contentious alimony and custody cases that have only recently been
resolved. Nevertheless, the gravelly-voiced composer sings about her readiness to
accept love again on her newest release, telling the Blade that when she sings, I think
Im ready to try my hand at love again in the track Rock & Roll Me, shes singing
about her budding relationship with Nurse Jackie creator Linda Wallem, whom she
met through her ex.
I dont think were ever ready, she says. Like if it was up to me Id still be sitting up
in my room, No! No! Im not going to do that again! But love has a way of coming and
the relationship that Im actually in now, shes been my best friend for 10 years. Believe
me, I wasnt going to go out and look for it, it found its way into my home. Im very happy.
Yes I am ready to try my hand at love again.
WASHINGTON BLADE: So the banjitar: where did you nd this instrument?
MELISSA ETHERIDGE: It kind of started when I was writing songs to go play on the
album, before I went to record. Listening to the radio, listening to popular music trends,
I was delighted that people were playing organic instruments. I was hearing mandolins
and banjos and real instruments.
I remember thinking, I can play the banjo. You know. Im not terribly good at it, I
played it a long, long time ago, but I can play a song on it.
So when I wrote Falling Up, I thought, Yeah, I want to put banjo on this, so I
brought my banjo to the studio, and I said, Yeah Im going to play the banjo; not so
good at it but you know, itll be ne. And my guitar tech, Mark VanGool hes just a
genius guitar guy well why dont you play the banjitar. I look at him like, What are you
talking about, and he says, Yeah, its a banjo body, but its got a guitar neck, so you play
it like a guitar, but it sounds like a banjo. I said That just sounds perfect!
So he had one. He brought it. I played it, and the rest is history.
The album might be a dying art, with everyone being able to just buy singles so much.
And really, I still think in a collection of music, not just one song. So all the songs are really
different. It was hard to pick a rst single. Whats representative of this album? Its really
hard. The record company chose Falling Up, and I was like OK.
BLADE: You described that 4th Street feeling as the freedom to put everything you
owned into your Chevy Impala. Youve been on a long journey from Leavenworth Kan., so
its interesting that the emotional center of this album has us listening to Al Green and Tina
Turner on your old 8-track. Why was it so important for you to bring us all back here with you?
ETHERIDGE: Because thats where my journey took me. I thought in the spiritual
evolution of aging and gaining wisdom that I would somehow shed all my old stuff and
become something new. What I found is the only way you can become something new
is to completely embrace all the old that you are and understand where you came from,
and hold it, and even change your past in a way in the way that you perceive it. In the
way that you hold it now. And music takes you right back there. Its obvious that were
doing some reminiscing as a society right now. The music sounds like its right out of the
60s or something, everything is retro, its going back. Its like taking the best of what we
did do and growing on it. The organic stuff. Thats what I found. Im not getting away from
this, Im being in this, and seeing it as something better.
BLADE: You sing Shake it like a polaroid in your rst single Falling Up which
sounds like a nod to Outkasts Andre 3000. Who are some other contemporary top 40
artists that you appreciate?
ETHERIDGE: Oh yeah! Love Outkast. Always have. I think theyre very innovative and
creative. I can cross all genres. My kids especially like my daughter play artists, she
rst turned me onto Ellie Goulding. Shes a little pop for me, but I appreciate a lot of the
singer-songwriter stuff. Loved the Mumford and Sons album, Band of Horses, love Black
Keys, (Im) loving Alabama Shakes. All these great artists that I just want to see live and
jump around with.
BLADE: You came out 19 years ago and released Yes I Am. Just recently, R&B singer
Frank Ocean followed your script, coming out and dropping an album; how has the music
industry changed for gay musicians since 93?
ETHERIDGE: Well, theres safety in numbers, you know? I think in the 90s when those
of us were peaking out, it was a sparse eld. But I think everyone was kind of watching
going, Well, are you going to lose everything? Is it going to be like what we think? And
its all about how you kind of hold yourself in it.

Lee Whitman has been making lms almost as long as he can remember.
The 29-year-old Derby, Kan., native grew up using his fathers video camera
to make shorts and all through high school and college (he studied broadcast
journalism at Wichita State University) he continued.
His rst feature-length project, War Stories was on the festival circuit in
2009 and is now out on DVD. It tells the story of a kid named Tim who grew up
believing his father was killed in the Gulf War but discovers he may still be alive.
Whitman says he recouped the $20,000 he put into the lm and is now at work
on another with the working title of 16 Days and Counting, which he says will
be an LGBT-themed relationship thriller.
He also makes shorts and hopes to post a new one, as yet untitled, on
YouTube within a week or so. Visit uncheckablelms.com or nd him on YouTube
under the name aedude01 to see his work.
Whitman says hes lucky his day job is also creative. He works as a
government contractor writing and directing TV commercials and PSAs for the
Department of Defense.
I love it because not only is it a eld I really enjoy, I get to learn a lot of
techniques with the PSAs Id never use in a feature lm, he says.
Whitman has won two regional Emmy Awards for his government work.
He and boyfriend Quang Nguyen have been dating for about a year. In his
free time, Whitman enjoys photography, working out, wine, writing, running,
tennis, the beach and, of course, watching movies.
He came to D.C. about ve years ago from Kansas after his fathers Air Force
career gave him the chance to live in California, Arkansas, Colorado, Wyoming,
Illinois, South Carolina, Virginia and, of course, Kansas.
Whitman lives on Capitol Hill.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN OUT
AND WHO WAS THE HARDEST
PERSON TO TELL?
Ive been out for just over 11 years
now and it hasnt always been the easiest
journey. I would say the hardest people to
tell were my immediate family: my mom,
dad and little brother. Theyre conservative
Christian and they didnt take it too well
though theyve gotten much better
as time has gone on and now my little
brother is one of my biggest supporters.
WHOS YOUR LGBT HERO?
Probably Eric Alva or Dan Savage. Alva
for showing those who had their doubts
that LGBT people can serve in our
nations military with dignity and honor;
Savage for his work for bullied teens and
gay rights in general.
WHATS WASHINGTONS BEST
NIGHTSPOT, PAST OR PRESENT?
The Gibson, hands down. Great
drinks, fun atmosphere, hot wait staff.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM WEDDING.
I have two: one is a quiet beach wedding
with close friends. The other is a gigantic
state-style wedding with all the trappings.
In both scenarios my family puts aside their
religious views and is there to support me.
WHAT NON-LGBT ISSUE ARE YOU
MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT?
Support for military families and for
our veterans; I feel like both groups
have been overlooked throughout our
nations history. Its only been in the past
few years that people have started to
notice that military families really serve
too and that they need support! With
veterans theres quite a bit more that
we could and should be doing for them
when it comes to health care, education,
post-military job placement, etc.
WHAT HISTORICAL OUTCOME
WOULD YOU CHANGE?
The election of George W. Bush and
preventing 9-11 would be a good start.
WHATS BEEN THE MOST
MEMORABLE POP CULTURE
MOMENT OF YOUR LIFETIME?
Either the Janet Jackson halftime nipple
slip (and the following FCC court case) or
the moment when the show Battlestar
Galactica (2004) had the colonists arrive at
Earth midway through season four.
ON WHAT DO YOU INSIST?
Integrity
WHAT WAS YOUR LAST FACEBOOK
POST OR TWEET?
FB: A quick preview of what Im
working on ... (Attached to an image
from my upcoming short lm debuting
on YouTube next week.)
IF YOUR LIFE WERE A BOOK, WHAT
WOULD THE TITLE BE?
Swimming in Celluloid: The Lee
Whitman Story
IF SCIENCE DISCOVERED A WAY TO
CHANGE SEXUAL ORIENTATION,
WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
Stay gay. My struggles with my
orientation, and for acceptance because
of my orientation, have made me into the
strong-willed, extroverted individual I am
today. Why would I want to change that?
WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IN BEYOND
THE PHYSICAL WORLD?
I believe in the basic tenets of
Christianity, but I do not adhere to a
specic church doctrine.
WHATS YOUR ADVICE FOR LGBT
MOVEMENT LEADERS?
Focus on whats important; The entire
ordeal with Chick-l-A was just silly. All that
time and effort should have been focused
on passing ENDA and repealing DOMA.
WHAT WOULD YOU WALK ACROSS
HOT COALS FOR?
A multi-picture lm contract with a
prominent lm studio. Also my amazing
boyfriend.
WHAT LGBT STEREOTYPE ANNOYS
YOU MOST?
The bitchy queen
WHATS YOUR FAVORITE LGBT
MOVIE?
C.R.A.Z.Y. Its a fun nostalgia trip and
does a great job creating realistic characters
that arent usually found in gay cinema.
WHATS THE MOST OVERRATED
SOCIAL CUSTOM?
Passing greetings: When people walk by
and say, Hi how are you? and then past
before you have a chance to answer them.
WHAT TROPHY OR PRIZE DO YOU
MOST COVET?
An Oscar
WHAT DO YOU WISH YOUD KNOWN
AT 18?
Most of the crap you worry about
happening wont come to pass, so dont
waste your time stressing about it! Focus
on today, not tomorrow.
WHY WASHINGTON?
Why not? Its a fantastic town! It has
equal rights, fantastic food, intelligent
discourse, handsome men and
interesting museums. Whats not to love?

Wrestler coy on private
life but sees himself as
gay inspiration
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
In the high drama world of professional
wrestling, James Long is better known
as Paredyse. With peacock-colored eye
makeup, skimpy trunks and painted
nails, this self-described fabulous,
amboyant, femmeboy phenom isnt
your everyday wrestler.
He prances and irts, occasionally
stroking a vexed opponents rippling abs
before executing a devastating missile
drop kick; but unlike the gender-bending
villains of wrestling past, Paredyse is the
baby-faced fan favorite.
For Long, who graduated from Virginia
Commonwealth University with a bachelor
of ne arts degree before sashaying into
the wrestling ring, Paredyse is partly an
exercise in creative expression.
When you start in the business your
character is vanilla, youre just a cog in
the wheel used to build up more veteran
wrestlers, says Long, who is rumored
to be straight but opts not to reveal his
orientation during his interview with the
Blade. But as time passes, an evolution
takes place and youre able to develop
your own character by trying out new
things, and eventually people come to
know and hopefully like him.
Receptive to new challenges, Long is
currently making his theatrical debut in
Woolly Mammoths season opener The
Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity as both
actor and wrestling trainer to the cast. Set
against the pro wrestling scene, Brooklyn-
based playwright Kristoffer Diazs critically
acclaimed comedy tackles racism and the
trappings of stardom. Woollys production,
staged by top local director John Vreeke
(who is gay), features company member
Michael Russotto (also gay), Jose Joaquin
Perez, Shawn T. Andrew and Adi Hanash.
Long plays three wrestlers: A generic
villain; Billy Heartland, an all-American boy;
and Old Glory, a sort of grizzled older guy
wrapped in the ag. Making the jump from
the wrestling ring to rehearsal room was
relatively smooth, says Long, 30. Wrestling
may look disorganized and chaotic, but
in fact it requires a lot of discipline, so it
wasnt hard for me to settle in and get to
work. This is my rst play ever. I tried out for
Fahrenheit 451 in high school and didnt
make it so I gured theater wasnt for me. I
was wrong. The director and cast have been
great about involving me in the process and
allowing me to work on my characters. Its
been awesome.
As far as wrestling on stage goes, were
determined to make Woollys production
a hard-hitting, unforgettable spectacle. It
will feel real and not like staged combat.
Audiences will see something new and
amazing every night.
Director John Vreeke says, The
performance parallels between the worlds
of theater and wrestling are greater than
most people think. [Long] is a natural
performer ... he does it every time he
comes into a wrestling arena/ring. And its
not just his athletic ability. It has more to
do with his ability to improvise, play the
audience and create character. He does
all of that all the time. Its a great t for our
work in theater.
In addition, adds Vreeke, [Long] is our
technical advisor on all levels of production:
acting, lights, video and sound. He lets me
know when we get it right.
Long grew up in Woodbridge, Va.
During his college years in Richmond he
started wrestling in a hip, highly attended,
late night underground league.
After graduation, he and a couple of
buddies moved to St. Louis and began
training in earnest. Soon Long began
wrestling for Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW),
an independent professional wrestling
promotion best known as a proving
ground for its up-and-coming wrestlers.
OVW serves as the ofcial developmental
territory for Total Nonstop Action
Wrestling (TNA).
