CONSUMER EXPENDITURES Spending on Consumer Goods and Services

Consumer spending on consumer goods and services was P4.61 trillion in 2007, a 67.08% growth from the P3.23 trillion in 2000. Consumer spending was largest for food and non-alcoholic beverages during the review period with an average annual spending share of 38.41% mainly because consumers regard food and non-alcoholic beverages as the primary commodities among consumer goods. Largest spending share in food and non-alcoholic drinks is also due to the high cost of other consumer goods such as houses and private vehicles among others, which led consumers to spend less on these goods. Large spending share in food and nonalcoholic drinks was also due to growing health consciousness of many consumers. Among the consumer goods and services, communications had the strongest growth with a 164.73% growth rate during the review period. Growing interest and growing consumption of communications devices, the internet and other communicationsrelated tools especially among the teen population propelled spending on communications at a higher and faster rate. Meanwhile, spending on luxury products and services such as leisure and recreation was in the lowest position with only .52% average annual spending share. Other luxury products such as hotels and catering posted a 6.58% average annual spending share. Spending on luxury products and services, however, make up the lowest proportion in consumer spending growth during the review period. This is due to accelerated annual disposable income of household members and consumers. Impact Growth in consumer spending has increased demand and consumption for different consumer goods, including food and nonalcoholic beverages, while increasing the rate of housing units occupied and miscellaneous goods and services sold. A rise in consumer spending also increased consumption for household goods and services, transport services, communications services, education, leisure and recreation, clothing and footwear, hotels and catering, health goods and medical services, and alcoholic beverages and tobacco. Large expenditures on food and non-alcoholic beverages and other primary commodities led to decreased spending and consumption for luxury goods. High spending growth for the communications sector increased spending and consumption for communications devices, the internet, media and other communications-related products.
