Accurate, reliable, easy to replace: Bosch sensors

Increasing original-equipment demand Greater need for spare parts

Modern vehicles are being equipped with more and more electronic components. As a consequence, there has also been an increase in the number of sensors installed in vehicles. These sensors act as the sense organs of a vehicle to record a wide range of different parameters. They can be used for an almost unlimited range of applications and the number of different areas where they are used in automobiles is constantly on the increase. The end result is that nowadays there are hardly any vehicles at all on the road which are not equipped with sensors. Drivers are embracing innovative technology Wherever electronic control systems need to be supplied with information, sensors are on hand to provide the essential signals. Todays drivers no longer want to do without the benefits that these

systems provide, which include improvements in cost-efficiency, safety, convenience and performance. As a result, new vehicles are today being equipped with more sensors than ever before. Many vehicle manufacturers depend on the capabilities and quality of Bosch sensors - and their numbers are increasing. The proportion of aftermarket vehicles that are equipped with sensors is rising accordingly. Great potential for dynamic workshops Sensors are wearing parts. This represents an excellent opportunity for dynamic workshops. By supplying your customers with sensors you can provide them with a full range of services all from one source.

The variety of sensors used for automotive applications has increased rapidly in recent years. Up to 50 individual sensors may be installed in a compact-class vehicle. Bosch has a comprehensive range of automotive sensors available for trade and workshops, together with the associated testing equipment.

High precision even under extreme conditions

Lambda sensors: Reliability and expertise from the inventor of the lambda sensor Lambda sensors measure the concentration of oxygen in the exhaust gas. This measured variable is essential for operation of the closed-loop-controlled three-way catalytic converters (gasoline engines) and for monitoring lambda values (diesel engines). These sensors thus make a decisive contribution to ensuring low emissions values and good fuel economy. As the inventor of the lambda sensor, Bosch has the largest worldwide market coverage and is the leader in the original-equipment market and aftermarket parts sales. Knock sensors: For controlled combustion Knocking can permanently damage an engine. Knock sensors fitted directly to the engine block record structureborne sound (knocking) in the engine and transfer this data to the engine-management system. These values

are then used to counteract the problem and ensure smoother combustion. This results in improved efficiency and longer service life. Hot-film air-mass meters: Optimal performance and low levels of harmful emissions Hot-film air-mass meters measure the momentary air flow in the engine very quickly and precisely so that the specified air/fuel ratio can be maintained. This ensures optimal engine combustion, with the twin benefits of low levels of harmful emissions combined with greater efficiency.

Bosch knock sensors: The engines ear ensures long service life and optimal operation.

Pressure sensors: Reliability combined with extremely fast response times

Micromechanical pressure sensors are predominantly used to measure atmospheric pressure. They supply the engine-management system with reliable values to ensure that the engine runs with the appropriate air/fuel ratio. Bosch pressure sensors have extremely fast response times, as well as operating very reliably and accurately. Low-pressure sensors These monitor oil pressure, fuel pressure, intake-manifold pressure and ambient pressure. High-pressure sensors These record the fuel pressure in the Common Rail Systems fuel rail and in the high-pressure rail of the gasoline direct-injection system. Peripheral pressure sensors These sensors measure pressure increases in the vehicle doors, e.g. resulting from a side impact, and transfer these values to the airbag control unit. Differential-pressure sensors These sensors can be installed in the exhaust-gas passage, for example, or in the diesel particulate filter where they record the filters load condition and transfer the values to the engine-management system. They are therefore essential for ensuring best-possible emissions values and fuel efficiency.

Bosch low-pressure sensors: High measuring accuracy with fast response times.

Bosch high-pressure sensors: Compact, robust, vibration-resistant with outstanding measuring accuracy throughout their entire service life.

Rotation-speed sensors/ temperature sensors:

Bosch rotation-speed sensors are used to record an extremely wide variety of measurement data. The information they supply is used by transmission, engine, navigation and running-gear control systems. Crankshaft sensors For non-contact measurement of crankshaft rotation angle and speed.

Camshaft sensors (phase sensors) For non-contact measurement of camshaft rotation angle. They are fitted directly to the camshaft.

Overview of other sensors

Pedal-travel sensors: For trouble-free acceleration Pedal-travel sensors directly monitor driver actuation of the accelerator pedal and transfer this information to the electronic control unit which combines it with additional data to operate the throttle valve accordingly. The sensor is integrated in the pedal module. Yaw-rate sensors for the Electronic Stability Program Steering-angle sensors: Intelligent vehicle steering Steering-angle sensors are fitted to the steering column or steering box for non-contact measurement of the steering angle. They support such features as the new active steering systems or the Electronic Stability Program (ESP). ESP These sensors very accurately record the yawing movements of a vehicle about its vertical axis and supply the data to the Electronic Stability Program ESP. Yaw-rate sensors: Extreme precision in extreme situations Yaw-rate sensors record the vehicles yawing movements about its longitudinal or vertical axis. The values supplied by the sensors are used to support the safety systems for occupant protection and the navigation systems.

Multitalented sensors for extra safety and ride comfort

Gearbox-rpm sensors Gearbox-rpm sensors are integrated in the transmission control module or installed as stand-alone sensors. They perform non-contact measurement of the input and output speeds of automatic transmissions, automated shift transmissions and continuously variable automatic transmissions. Wheel-speed sensors These perform non-contact measurement of wheel speed. The wheel-speed information is used, for example, by the Antilock Braking System (ABS), as well as navigation and running-gear control systems.

Temperature sensors: Extreme accuracy under extreme conditions Temperature sensors monitor the temperature of coolant, oil and air and transfer the data to the engine-management system. Depending on the application, the sensors may be installed in the engine block, cooling circuit or intake-air passage.

Torque sensors: Essential for accurate and reliable power steering Torque sensors for steering systems perform non-contact measurement of torque and thus record the position and movement of the steering wheel. This data is then transferred to the electric and electrohydraulic powersteering systems where it is processed to ensure reliable steering at all times. Acceleration sensors: Lightening reactions when danger strikes Acceleration sensors record the acceleration values of a frontal or side impact. They support the Electronic Stability Program ESP and the Antilock Braking System ABS, or supply values which are used, for example, to trigger the belt tensioners, airbags or anti-roll bar.

Rain sensors: Maximum safety, maximum convenience Rain sensors detect drops of water on the windshield and automatically activate the windshield wipers. Rain sensors react within fractions of a second, e.g. if water splashes on the windshield during overtaking, and automatically set the system to the appropriate speed. Climate-control sensors: Always fresh air inside the vehicle If the air-conditioning system is operating in recirculatedair mode the vehicle occupants use up all the oxygen inside the vehicle with the result that they get tired and inattentive, and develop headaches. Climate-control sensors measure the CO2 concentration of the air inside the vehicle and automatically admit fresh air if certain limits are dropped below.
