By John Schaffner It was symbolic, but impressive none the less. On Thursday, Aug. 30, in a re-creation of the scene as has been depicted by historians, the commander of the Brig Niagara was lowered onto a longboat with the Dont Give Up The Ship flag draped over his shoulders. The commander is a direct descendent of Oliver Hazard Perry, and was rowed by several Niagara crew members to board the USS DeWert, an Oliver Hazard Perry Class frigate docked in Cleveland Harbor. It was an historic transfer of command from the direct descendants of the commander of the U.S. Navy Fleet in the Sep-
tember 1813 Battle of Lake Erie to the commander of a modern U.S. Navy ship. This event was the official opening of a number of ceremonies and activities that will commemorate the bi-centennial of the Sept. 13, 1813, Battle of Lake Erie, the battle that took place about 10 miles north of Port Clinton. The guest speakers for the event included Commander Joseph C. Thomas, the Commanding Officer of the USS DeWert; Rear Admiral Gregory Nosal, Commander Carrier Strike Group Two; Vice Admiral Charles W. Martoglio, Deputy Commander U.S. European Command; US Coast Guard Admiral Mike Parks; and David Zavagno, Chairman of The Perry Group Battle of Lake Erie Bicentennial Committee. In the battle, Perry was forced to transfer his flag through a hail of enemy fire from his flagship, Lawrence, to the other brig in his command, Niagara. That singular event has been depicted in many pieces of artwork, including the mural in the stairwell at the Ottawa County Courthouse as well as in a painting that hangs on the wall in the Victory Bar at The Island House. A committee, headed up by former Port Clinton Mayor Debbie Hymore-Tester, is meeting to plan the citys activities to welcome one of 16 Tall Ships from the Great Lakes for the celebration over Labor Day weekend in 2013.
Ottawa County Commissioners Mark Stahl and Jim Sass pose with the Commander of the USS DeWert following the flag transfer ceremony Thursday in Cleveland Harbor. For a complete schedule of events of the 200th anniversary commemoration of the Skirmish on The Peninsula, which will be observed this month on Sept. 22 and 23 at several locations in and around Marblehead, check with the Ottawa County Historical Society at www.thekeepershouse.org.
While guests were touring the US Naval Vessels docked at Cleveland Harbor last Thursday, they were entertained by a practice session of the famed US Navy Precision Flying Team, The Blue Angels.
The full calendar of events commemorating the Battle of Lake Erie Bicentennial, as well as opportunities to get involved, can be found at www.battleoflakeeriebicentennial. com. To learn more about the U.S. Navys participation in the Celebration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812, visit www.ourflagwasstillthere.org.
The descendents of Commodore Perry are joined on the fantail of the USS DeWert by two Navy Admirals along with several sailors who were also honored on Thursday for their part in the ceremony.

The Port Clinton Artists Club had new signs created this year for their Arts in the Park event. One of their big signs was stolen. They cost the club $565 each and they planned on changing the date on the sign for the upcoming events each year. To say the least, they would like the sign returned. If anyone knows the whereabouts of the sign, call Barbara Radebaugh at 419-341-0390.

Recycling in Marblehead
BY VICKI KOZAK The village of Marblehead is always trying to buy green. Some of the areas that we have been addressing have been the parks and beautification areas plus some amenities for all of you to use. The township has a recycle station at the Danbury complex where you can take your empty glass, plastic, aluminum and tin containers. You can also drop off cardboard, magazines and newspapers. In the fall large paper bags are available to be used for leaves, and can be put at the curb for the maintenance crew to pick up. At Christmas time, live trees can also be left at the curb for pick up. Over the last several years, grants have been received from the OSS (Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca counties) Joint Solid Waste Management District. Through them, Marblehead is able to operate the leaf pick-up program, to buy cribbing (stackable support for vehicles after an accident or to stabilize structures damaged by fire) for the fire department, and for benches for the parks and fencing for the cemetery. Two of the benches were purchased from Barcos and are made of recycled aluminum. One bench is located across the street from the Village Hall and the other will soon be placed at Radar Park overlooking the flowers surrounding the flag pole. One other love seat bench will be placed on the east side of the large pine tree next to the shelter in James Park. This bench was purchased from Jacks Amish Country Konnection in Fremont and is constructed from recycled plastic milk jugs. The fencing for the cemetery will replace the current chain link fence. Fremont Fence is the supplier and with the help of Bryan Lucas, maintenance manager, and his crew, a new recycled aluminum fence and gate will be installed. This project is a 50% matching grant. Also, work has been done to the previously-owned Gresh property across from the village cemetery. New grass and a gravel parking lot have been added. Soon there will be benches for rest and a relaxing view of Lake Erie and its islands.

Production Notes:
BY YANEEK SMITH Whenever Oak Harbor struck, Genoa responded. At two different points in the game, the Rockets were able to score a touchdown and cut the deficit to eight points, only to see the Comets respond each time to create some breathing room on their way to a 4321 victory over their cross-county rivals. Genoa scored first on a one-yard touchdown run by Kyle Nutter and made it 8-0 on the two-point conversion. They pushed the lead to 15-0 on a 44-yard pass from Logan Scott to Quin Spiess. Oak Harbor, which had failed to score on its first two drives, responded wth a 12play, 75-yard drive that featured a fourthdown conversion and ended with Austin Wiegand finding A.J. Cecil in the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff, Genoa's Casey Gose returned it 72 yards to set the Comets up at Oak Harbor's 21-yard-line. Three plays later, Nutter scored from a yard out with four seconds remaining to give Genoa a 22-7 lead at halftime. While Oak Harbor head coach Mike May was pleased with his team's effort, he acknowledged that they made some costly mistakes. We came out and played hard, May said. But we had some breakdowns and just couldn't finish it off. The same thing happened in the second half. After the Rockets cut the deficit to 22-14, the Comets responded, running the ball five consecutive times for 37 yards before Scott hit Jake Young for a 26-yard touchdown to push the lead to 28-14.

FINAL APPROVAL
Date
Genoa was able to establish the run early, finishing with 32 carries for 205 yards as a team. The rushing attack set up the pass, and the Comets scored three touchdowns (44, 26, 52) on play-action fakes, which proved to be the difference in the game. That game could've been very different without the three pass plays, Wiegand said. Nutter finished with 23 carries for 160 yards and three touchdowns and Scott connected on all three of his passes for 122 yards and three touchdowns. Oak Harbor, which finished with 263 yards rushing as a team, was led by Wiegand, who had 129 yards on 22 carries. Running back Mark Konieczny finished with 23 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown. This week, the Rockets host Eastwood. Last season, the Eagles went 11-1, won the Northern Buckeye Conference title and advanced to the Division IV Regional Semifinals. However, this season has been more difficult for Eastwood as it has struggled to an 0-2 start. Both of their losses, though, have come against elite teams, Patrick Henry (40-28) and Clyde (28-23). Last season, the Eagles beat Oak Harbor, 52-14. Eastwood is known for its potent running attack and a defense that limits big plays. On top of that, the Eagles will be looking to win their first game of the season as they enter conference play, knowing that another loss or two could significantly hurt their chances of qualifying for the playoffs.
