Fall Semester - 2010 Mark W. Thomas III, MPS

GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION It is the purpose of this course to introduce the student to the fundamental principles of landscape architecture, with emphasis on the interrelationship between architecture and the landscape in which it is placed. Particular focus will be directed to plant material, the functional and aesthetic roles they play, and the environmental factors that affect landscape design. Additionally the process of landscape design development will be examined, with a series of design exercises relating to specific sites on campus. These exercises cumulatively comprise a major semester project, which counts for approximately half of the semesters grade. A brief overview of the history of landscape architecture will also be covered through the individual research assignments. In addition students will become familiar with many of the major landscape architects that have contributed to the profession, again through a series of class discussions, presentations, and student research papers. PLANT MATERIAL STUDIES Specific types of plant material will be studied through field research exercises, which include plant identification, environmental requirements, growth characteristics, design applications, functional uses, etc. Local and regional plant species will be emphasized through a series of plant walks during class periods. These field studies exercises take place during the first half of class, as long as daylight permits, or approximately the first nine class sessions. In addition to the study of specific plant species, comparisons will be made to plant types found in other regions or climates, in order that students may apply the knowledge gained in this class to any other place. Field sessions will also include analysis of and discussion about specific landscape designs visited by the class. It is recommended that each student obtain a clipboard or notebook for making field notes and sketches. Students may also use photography for field documentation. SEMESTER PROJECT (50% of grade) The focus of the semester project is the preparation of a landscape design project, as mentioned above. Each student will select a specific site on campus, which will become the subject of each class assignment. Similar to the process of architectural design, the semester project will take students through a series of exercises that result in a final landscape plan for the chosen site. After the site is selected, a thorough site analysis will be conducted, followed by the development of a program and concept for the project. Through design development student will produce a hardscape plan, a planting plan, and a rendered presentation plan. A more detailed description of each phase of the project will be presented as the semester continues. The project is worth 50% of final grade. RESEARCH PAPERS and CLASS PRESENTATIONS (40% of grade) As mentioned above, each student will do two brief research papers, one being a topic related to the history of landscape architecture, and the other a biography and portfolio study of major players in the profession. Each student will be assigned a history topic and landscape architect for these research exercises. Papers should follow MLA format, should be a minimum of 5 pp. in length, plus illustrations. Papers will be due on the last day of class. In addition to the written papers, each student will prepare a brief PowerPoint presentation to be given during class, relating to the research topic. The PowerPoint presentation should be approximately 10-15 minutes in length, and should succinctly address the principal points and issues contained in the research. There should be a good graphic representation of the subject matter in the presentation. Each presenter should also prepare a one-page handout to be distributed to classmates. Each research project counts for 20% of the final grade. LANDSCAPE JOURNAL (10% of grade) The landscape journal is the last component of assignments for the class. The journal should contain any field notes or sketches, photographs, handouts, plant lists, quizzes, any other assignments, etc. Students are encourage to exercise creativity in putting the landscape journal together, as it is intended to serve as a personal reference source for future school projects. The journal will be graded on the basis of thoroughness, completeness, and creativity. The landscape journal counts for 10% of the final grade.

GRADING POLICY & ATTENDANCE Students will be graded on the basis of class participation as well as completion of class assignments. Since the course is designated as a seminar, all students are expected to participate fully in class discussions and activities. There is no final exam scheduled for this course. Non-excused absences will be figured into final grade determination, as required by Tulane University policy. Any student who misses or plans to miss a class should advise via email in advance, or in the case of illness, within 24 hours of having missed the class. If sufficient notification is not given, the absence will be counted as non-excused. University policy provides for students with non-excused absences to receive a lower grade. All cell phones must be turned off during class or set on vibrate. Use of a cell phone, I-pods, laptops (other than for class presentations), and other electronic devices during class is not permitted, and will not be tolerated. SUMMARY It is hoped that this course will provide students with a greater understanding of the natural landscape and its relationship to built form. By undertaking class activities and assignments the student will have engaged in a variety of landscape-related topics and processes. It is the intent of this course to help future architects and preservationists to be able to approach projects in a more sensitive and environmentally responsible manner, resulting in higher quality design proposals and preservation policies. Finally, the course is meant to be fun. Students are encouraged to participate fully and enjoyably, which allows them to get the most out of the class experience. WRITING INTENSIVE Any student wishing to receive writing intensive credit for this class must fill out the proper paperwork and submit for professors authorization, then submit to the Associate Deans office for final approval. Writing intensive requites that there be a minimum of 20 pages, not including illustrations. Furthermore the student must submit the first draft of the paper for review no later than Wednesday, 03 November 2010. Once the paper has been returned to the student, it must be re-written and submitted no later than the last class period, Wednesday, 01 December 2010. NOTE: All assignments must be submitted in hard copy as well as digitally on a CD, as per TSA requirements.
