Civil War Encampment

Our Canaltown area was keenly represented in the 1861-1865 Civil War, including the Battle of Gettysburg. Experience what day-to-day life was really like for a Union Civil War soldier. The 28th NY Volunteer Infantry will camp out and perform demonstrations on the west lawn of Zion Episcopal Church on the four churches corner of Main Street. These dedicated living history reanactors attend memorial services, parades and events such as Canaltown Days throughout the eastern United States to preserve the memory and give honor to the Men in Blue.

Canal Walking Tours

Walk the same steps as the settlers of our area, and learn the importance of the Erie Canal when it was the chief means of transportation. Veteran guides Bill Rider and Pete Henry will conduct informative one hour walking tours on Saturday at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm; and Sunday at 1:00 pm. Tour begins at the Information Booth downtown. Return busing will be available when your tour completes at Aqueduct Park for your convenience.

The popular Canaltown Days Car Show, sponsored by Finger Lakes Street Machines, will line up, in the heart of downtown, on Main Street on Saturday, September 15 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, rain or shine. There is no viewing admission. A portion of driver entry fees will benefit Healing Heroes Network. A fine representation of antique and classic vehicles, crossing the span of time, will please every car enthusiast. Registration begins at 9:00 am. Judging takes place from noon to 2:00 pm with awards immediately following. Trophies are awarded to the Top 50 Cars and Best in Show. For information visit www.palmyracanaltowndays.org.

Vicky Daly: 2012 Parade Marshal

grand parade in this years Canaltown Days festival, slated for Sept. 15 and 16, on East Main Street in the village. The parade is the festivals centerpiece, and its grand marshal is a dignitary. I was very surprised, said Daly of being picked, and very flatteredand humbled. A committee of past parade marshals make the selection each year, explained Canaltown Days Committee Chairman Tom Klemann. Those are the people that are involved in the community, who do a lot of volunteer work, he said. So they best know the people in the community who are doing a lot of the things with them and the people who should be recognized. Jerry Kelly chairs the marshal selection. Shes very civic minded, he said. She has been promoting Palmyra for a number of years. And those are some of the qualifications we look for. Her track record is really outstanding. Daly has received several awards in her 11 years as mayor. But the grand marshal honor is extra special because it comes from home. Its timely, too. Daly recently announced she would not seek a fourth term in office; voters will pick a new mayor in the general election this November. Daly decided she wanted to be mayor three years into her retirement from a successful career in education: She had been a teacher, librarian and a staff developer for Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES. It seemed to me there ought to be a choice in the village of Palmyra, she said. When she took the helm in 2001 she launched a weekly newspaper column called Conversation with the Mayor to keep residents abreast of local happenings. She has used it promote local offerings like the canal and shops and, on occasion, to address rumors or controversy. It was fitting since her platform was simple: Ill listen to you and Ill get you an answer. In the end, she added, thats what Ive done. Sometimes you dont like it but you do get an answer. Daly and her husband have been married almost 53 years. They have four grown children and four grandchildren. Their nest is not quite empty, though, as theyve got a 1-year-old Welsh Pembroke corgi named Stubby to keep them company. As mayor, Daly has been a tireless Erie Canal booster. She has pushed for the expansion of the trail and the Port of Palmyra Marina, which recently saw the addition of a pavilion with restrooms and showers. She often speaks of the virtues of canal tourism and has even bent the ear of the now Secretary of State Hilary Clinton over coffee in the Muddy Waters Caf, which overlooks the port. And, Daly is a member of Canal New York, an organization aimed at promoting the waterway and the businesses that rely on its users. Another of her priorities has been protecting local landmarks. Shes proud to have helped see to the creation of a village preservation commission, which supports a village historic preservation ordinance. The Landmark Society of Western New York gave Daly the Paul Malo award in 2010 in part because, under her watch, the village was the first in the county to adopt such an ordinance. Likewise, the society appreciated her efforts in expanding the villages National Register Historic District. I know she has done a great job for Palmyra both as mayor and with all the other things that she does, said Klemann. And those other things are often small acts of kindness, like the delivery of a hot meal.

By Jessica Youngman PALMYRA Once a month, Vicky Daly makes the rounds with her husband delivering meals to some of the senior residents in the Towpath Manor Apartments complex on Canal Street. She doesnt know how many of the Meals on Wheels recipients are aware that shes the mayor. But thats just as well; shes happy to simply be Vicky. When shes not attending to village business, Daly keeps a full schedule, much of it doing things to help people and give back to the community. In addition to volunteering for Meals on Wheels at Towpath and elsewhere in the county, shes part of the Palmyra Kings Daughters, an organization that provides temporary assistance to the needy, whether its a loaned wheelchair or help paying an electric bill. And, just a few weeks ago you mightve seen the apron-clad mayor serving up hots and burgers at the Wayne County Fair. Shes a member of the Palmyra-Macedon Rotary Club and was happy to work in the organizations concessions booth to raise money for its many service endeavors. For those reasons and more, Daly has been named grand marshal of the

As a community, were very fortunate to have her many years of service, added Klemann. Palmyra Village Clerk Alicia Lynch agreed. She was last years parade marshal. No one loves Palmyra more or works harder on its behalf, she said, then quipped, However, in keeping with the Miss America tradition, I told her Id be happy to fill in for her if she finds herself unable to fulfill her duties!

Palmyras Proud History

Palmyras fine heritage dates back to its founding in 1789; first area settler was John Swift. Palmyra, the Queen of Canaltowns, has had an outstanding reputation for business and cultural development. During the heyday of the Erie Canal, Palmyra rivaled in size and diversity of commerce and economics with Rochester.

Our Canaltown boasts of the unique intersection with 4 corner churches, each built in the 1800s...the only Erie Canal Change Bridge and Aqueduct in the area...an original political Liberty Pole which is still standing...a Victorian influenced commerce area with unique circa buildings and ornate stately homes...the only Erie Canal era store in the United Statesthe Phelps Store still in tact with original merchandise and family possessions...the largest collection of historic coverlets in the country at the Alling Coverlet Museum, plus the Erie Canal Depot, the Printing Museum, and the Historic Palmyra Museum, a total of 5 unique museums preserving Palmyras heritage, are located here in this history-rich town. Fine original art created by amateur and professionals alike will be on display at the one day show and sale on Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm of Canaltown Days. The show will be held at the Parks & Rec Building on Main Street, next to the park. Ten different categories of fine art will be represented: oil and acrylic, watercolor, mixed media paintings, pencil, charcoal/pastel, photography (classic and digitally altered), fiber/textiles, metal/wood/clay/sculpture; plus, there is a separate category for Palmyra artwork (all mediums).

Palmyra-Macedon Rotary Club is the sponsor. If you would like to submit an item, appear at the Park & Rec Building on Friday, September 14 between 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Limit of two art entries per artist please. Contact Chairpersons Michelle and Alaina Palmer with questions at 315-597-2659. (No crafts or functional art please). Items will be available for purchase.

GRAND PARADE
The Grand Parade of Palmyra Canaltown Days begins promptly at 4:00 pm on Saturday, September 15. This year, the parade will feature thirteen marching bands including a new band, The Edge, which consists of members of the Empire Statesmen Marching Band. Everybodys favorite gangsters, The Hit Men, will perform their finest. In addition, there will be performances by the Fingerlakes Drum Line, Towpath Volunteers Fife and Drum Corps, a reunion of CA Palmer Drum and Fife Band, as well as several local performing groups. And, of course, many local service groups, businesses and political figures will be represented. First timers, the Perry Shrine Club, will choreograph little cars!

Rounding out the parade will be several local businesses and service groups displaying their creativity with floats demonstrating this years theme: Hooray for the USA! Prior to the parade, there will be a special performance at 3:00 pm by the Hit Men at the reviewing stand.
