The Lands is a 19th Century, 412-acre, nonprofit educational dairy farm where visitors can see, touch, taste, smell and learn about nutrition, archaeology, ecology, animal husbandry and land conservation. The farm practices rotational grazing and allow their cows to be in the pastures enjoying natures salad bar in addition their own chemical-free, home grown hay. Hillside milk & ice-cream are local favorites. A new mercantile features all locally made products.

Kirby Park Natural Area


This 91 acre, urban park features a porous pavement geogrid parking lot and riparian nature trail. The Riverfront Parks Committee aggressively controls Japanese knotweed along the river here. In addition, they annually host the Wyoming Valley Riverfest and Earth Day Education Day for 1,000s of school students at this site. The newly developed River Common sits across the river from this site.

Founded in 2008, the CLDS promotes sustainability through landscape-based education, demonstration, and public outreach. The Butler Township Community Garden contains 60 leased garden plots; a Pollinator Garden; Medicinal and Culinary Herb Garden; Rain Garden; and a Market Garden, where food is raised organically and sold at the Downtown Hazleton Farmer's Market.

Life Expressions Wellness Center


Located on sixteen acres of clean meadow in the Sugarloaf Valley. This office was built to offer holistic, vitalistic health care in a healthy, natural setting. Its award winning, green roof is a living meadow of 6,000 plants! This has the ecologic advantage of diminished runoff and provides insulation from the heat of summer and cold of winter.

Plains Animal Hospital


This facility is green both inside and out. Stormwater is managed with vegetated swales and roof drainage passes through rain gardens. Porous pavement is used for rear parking. Inside features include high efficiency HVAC with 5 separate zones. Energy recovery ventilation units reduce energy loss. Tubular skylights installed in treatment rooms provide natural lighting. Countertops are made from recycled sunflower seed hulls.

September 20 7:30 4:30 p.m.

This State Park features a green building that utilizes a geothermal heating and cooling system and has additional energy saving amenities. The park is also creating a Nature Explore outdoor classroom near their native butterfly garden. This area will encourage children to play in the dirt, build with blocks and sticks, explore a tree house and experience dramatic free play in the music and movement area. A Field Habitat Partnership works to restore over sixty acres of old fields that been invaded by invasive shrubs.

Directions to Kirby Park Natural Area


Take I-81 to Route 309 (Cross Valley Expressway) If you get off Route 309 in Wilkes-Barre/Plains (Exit 3) Turn left at the light at the end of the ramp. Follow River Street to North Street (Court House is landmark) and turn right. Go over the Veterans Memorial Bridge and turn right onto First Ave. Follow the road up and over the levy and park at the launch near Market Street Bridge. If you get off Route 309 in Kingston (Exit 4) Turn left at the light at the end of the ramp. Travel up and over the highway and turn left at the light onto Church Street. Follow Church Street as it turns right and becomes Third Avenue. Follow it to Pierce Street and make a left onto Pierce Street. Make a left onto First Avenue and follow it up and over the levy and park at the launch near Market Street Bridge.
