Time to tackle invasive
plant problems
Is your home making you sick?
(ARA) A long dry summer
(and some rainy days) has left
many homeowners looking out
on lawns and gardens overtaken
with invasive weeds and vines.
In 2012, the nation faced one
of the hottest summers on record
in the last 60 years. With more
than two thirds of the country
experiencing severe to extreme
drought, conditions were ideal
for pesky weeds to fourish.
Weeds like dandelions,
crabgrass and clover easily
tolerate hot temperatures and
dry soil, overtaking lawns and
gardens and lingering throughout
the cooler fall months. Ivy and
other aggressive vines thrive
in the summer heat, climbing
and covering bushes and trees
and ultimately killing the plants
underneath with their shade.
Left untreated, invasive plants
can quickly become health and
safety hazards. Kudzu can grow
up to a foot per day, causing tree
limbs to break under its weight,
damaging homes and outdoor
living spaces.
Common grass weeds like
nettles and thistles sting and
prick the skin, and contact with
dangerous plants like poison oak,
ivy and sumac cause moderate
to severe allergic reactions in
almost everyone.
Fall herbicide treatments
are the most effective way
to eliminate unattractive and
potentially harmful plants
from lawns and gardens so that
those spaces can be enjoyed
throughout the cool fall months,
says Aaron Hobbs, president of
RISE (Responsible Industry for a
Sound Environment), a national
organization representing the
manufacturers, formulators and
distributors of pesticide and
fertilizer products.
This is the best time of year
to eliminate invasive plants,
Hobbs adds. Weeds move the
products of photosynthesis like
water, glucose and oxygen to
their roots for winter food storage
in the fall, enabling the roots to
soak up herbicides as well. Two
to three treatments are usually
all that is needed to completely
destroy these types of plants.
Effective herbicide options
exist for every type of weed
and vine. The Environmental
Protection Agency rigorously
tests herbicides for potential
human health and environmental
impact before they can be
registered and sold for use. As
with all pesticides, users should
always read labels and use and
store products accordingly.
With just one or two follow-
up treatments after an initial fall
herbicide application, invasive
plants are eradicated at the root,
and people can take back their
lawns and gardens to enjoy the
beauty of fall.
(ARA) Your home its
your castle, your sanctuary. But
could the place you go to escape
the rest of the world be bad for
you? Formaldehyde, chloroform
and even asbestos could be in
your home and you may not
even know it.
First, the good news. Today
were designing houses that are
green-friendly, says Dan Lee,
Interior Design instructor at The
Art Institute of Dallas, a campus
of South University, and the
president of Lee Design Group.
Materials today have fewer
chemicals and less carcinogenic
substances.
But if youre in an older
house or did some remodeling or
refurbishing on your own, there
could be substances in your home
that are bad for your health.
Theres something called
volatile organic compounds
or VOCs, says Kathleen
Wakefeld, Interior Design and
Design & Technical Graphics
program coordinator at The
Art Institute of San Antonio, a
branch of The Art Institute of
Houston. She adds, They are
emitted from certain solids and
liquids like paint.
Wakefeld says that short-
term exposure to VOCs can
cause nausea and irritation
to the eyes, while long-term
exposure could damage your
kidneys and liver. VOCs are also
emitted from carpet foam made
of polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
So Wakefeld suggests that if
youre putting down carpet you
stay elsewhere for a few weeks
while the chemicals are being
released. And keep windows
open if possible to air out the
space more quickly and not trap
the compounds in your home.
Lee suggests you avoid carpet
altogether. Go with wood or
natural stone foors over carpets
and make sure youre shopping
for PVC-free foors, he says.
When adding a little color
to your home, look for paints
with low or no VOC emissions.
It should be right on the label.
According to Wakefeld, federal
limits for fat paint are 250
milligrams per liter, and 380
milligrams per liter for all other
kinds. California standards are
more stringent 100 milligrams
per liter for fat paint and 150
milligrams per liter for all others.
If youre building your
home from the ground up,
consider using copper plumbing.
Builders have gotten away
from copper and switched to
PVC, says Lee, but copper is
a natural sterilizer. If water sits
in copper, its being sterilized. In
PVC, its growing something.
If your home was built in the
70s, 80s or 90s, the press board
used could contain formaldehyde,
explains Lee. And the plastic
laminate in those homes was
almost always glued and
manufactured with formaldehyde
as well. And if your home was
built before the 60s, the foor
and wall coverings may contain
asbestos gluing agents.
If youre careful about the
materials youre using in your
home building and remodeling
projects, make sure that caution
extends to the household
products you bring into your
house as well, says Lee. Many
fabric softeners actually contain
chloroform, benzyl acetate
and pentane. These are cancer-
causing agents, warns Lee. Also,
make sure youre using natural
pesticides in the yard as well.
Wakefeld advises researching
products on the internet before
buying them. She also advises
hiring an interior designer that
specializes in environmental and
sustainable design for any home
improvement.

Lancaster, Pa. FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT SEPTEMBER 16, 2012 3
Create the perfect
kids room
(ARA) Nurseries and
playrooms on television and
in magazines might have you
thinking your child could use
a more playful environment.
Some of the more elaborate
designs undoubtedly cost more
time and money than you may
want to spend, but dont let that
discourage you.
Creating a space your kids
can call their own doesnt need
to break the bank or require
too much of your time. With a
little creative thinking, you can
transform any space into the
perfect kid-friendly retreat.
Color the walls
Children are drawn to bright
colors that stimulate their
creativity. And, though you
dont want them taking matters
into their own hands when it
comes to wall art, there are other
great ways to create a beautifully
colorful environment.
With Dutch Boys Crayola
palette, a more fun and playful
kids room is just a few paint
strokes away. Featuring vibrant
shades that match your kids
crayons, this palette offers an
easy way to bring life into your
childs hideaway. Whimsical
colors like Inch Worm, Cream
Soda, Little Princess and
Tropical Rain Forest will
instantly transform your childs
room into a fun-flled, lively
space. You dont need to stick
with one shade, either. Paint an
accent wall or even do custom
designs or stripes. With a few
hours and a little creativity, you
can quickly and easily turn the
kids room in your home into a
magical, youthful escape.
Fun-sized furniture
Adult-sized furniture can
leave your child feeling like
Goldilocks, so bring in some
pint-sized pieces to make them
believe the room is specially
meant just for them. Even if your
budget is tight, there are plenty
of options for fun-size furniture
available. Kids chairs and tables
are great additions to help them
comfortably color, read books,
do crafts and exercise their
creativity.
And there is no need to
spend a fortune. Garage sales
commonly offer kids furniture,
which can easily be restored.
Even if a fnd appears worn, a
fresh coat of white paint and
some bright chair cushions will
instantly make it good-as-new
for a fraction of the price.
Let kids help choose the
furniture, fabrics and color to
give them the feeling the space is
their own and turn the restoration
into a fun project.

Fall recycling
for spring reward
What to do about those pesky squeaks
By Wendy Komancheck
Special Features Writer
Ever wonder how you could
recycle those lettuce leaves,
cantaloupe rinds, and banana peels?
Consider composting them.
Unless your municipality has
ordinances against composting
(and you should check before you
start building a compost pile in
your garden), you can easily start
composting before winter sets in.
All you need is some dirt, brown
material in the form of decayed
leaves and dried grass clippings
and some green material in the
form of fresh grass clippings and
kitchen scraps.
Fruit and vegetable waste,
coffee grounds, shredded cardboard,
leavesboth fresh and dried, cow
(and) horse manure, shredded
newspaper, kitchen scraps and
garden waste (are perfect candidates
to put in a compost pile), Master
Gardener, Delores Nolt, of Ephrata,
suggested. But I dont put anything
with disease or weeds in my compost
bin since it doesnt get hot enough to
kill them.
Yet, how do you build a compost
pile?
Michele Pique, another Master
Gardener, who lives in Leola, said
that the following steps are involved
with building a compost pile. Layer
the following materials in this order
and build your pile from there:
1. One layer of greens to two
layers of brown
2. Green materials include fresh
leaves, grass clippings, plant stalks,
vines, and non-invasive weeds.
3. From the kitchen: fruit and
vegetable scraps, hair clippings,
feathers, egg shells, nutshells, and
old spices
4. Brown material: dried leaves,
dead weeds, clipped brush, straw,
and wood chips
5. Be sure to water if the material
is dry
6. Regular soil can be added with
the green in the middle. Matter of
fact, you can dig a hole in the middle
of the compost pile to bury your
green material into it as the pile gets
bigger.
7. Use in limited amounts: wood
ashes that contains lime and could
change the pH of your garden;
newspapers, which compost slowly;
and soil.
8. Do not add cat, dog, or human
waste to your compost besides
the fact that the smell will annoy
your neighbors these types of
waste carry pathogens that can cause
disease.
Compost doesnt require a lot of
care, but provides intense value in
its fnal value. However, to aid in
the decaying process, its important
to turn and mix your pile with a
pitchfork every three to four weeks
when you frst start composting.
Afterward, turning it can be done
every other month or so. The more
you turn your compost, the faster it
will decay.
Compost is the result of
bacterial activity that uses carbon
brown materialfor energy, and
nitrogengreen materialfor
thriving and multiplying. This
activity generates heat and needs
oxygen to occur. It is why the pile
needs to be aerated (through turning)
frequently, Pique said.
When springs rolls around,
depending on when you started your
compost in the fall and how often
you turned it, youll fnd that you
have humuswhich will feed your
landscape and garden.
Your pile of material will have
reduced considerably in size and be
replaced by fnished compost if the
pile has been properly maintained,
Pique said. It should not be hot in
the center. Compost is crumbly, dark
brown, and will smell like a walk in
the forest: humus.
(ARA) Do you ever feel
like youre trying to avoid
tripping off an alarm as youre
carefully tiptoe through your
living room? Except instead
of an alarm, youre hoping not
to trigger that familiar creak or
groan of the foorboards. Its
happened to everybody, and at
times it wakes up the newborn
(or anyone else who is asleep),
interrupts home-offce calls, and
lets everyone in the house know
about your midnight snack run
to the fridge.
Sound familiar? If so, you
probably assumed a squeaky
foor was something youd have
to live with. Contrary to popular
belief, however, a squeak in the
foor is relatively easy to repair.
It used to be that home
improvement experts advised
only going underneath a foor
to fx a creaky foorboard.
However, second foors cannot
be repaired this way, due to
the frst foor ceiling. Your
grandparents probably advised
using talcum powder, liquid
wax or powdered soap between
the foorboards of that hardwood
foor to stop it from squeaking.
With new products, however,
all of these old-fashioned
remedies can be forgotten. There
is no need to lift up carpet or
foorboards and the task can be
performed on top of the fooring.
All it takes is a power drill and
the hardware from the kit.
Squeaks occur when shrinks
and gaps develop around
different fooring elements. For
example, in most creaky foors,
a nail that was used to fasten
the foor has become loose and
a squeak happens as a result of
the nail rubbing on the sub foor.
Its also possible that wooden
planks have loosened from the
joist below them and are rubbing
against one another.
For homeowners with
carpeted foors, products such
as Squeeeeek No More, uses a
tool that will fnd the location
of the foor joists from above
the foor. After locating the
joists, an alignment and depth-
control fxture allows you to
drill through the carpet with one

SHOWROOM HOURS MON-FRI 8AM-6PM SAT 8AM-1PM
Tackle household chores this fall
(ARA) As fall approaches,
the daylight hours are dwindling,
kids are headed back to school,
and the lazy days of summer will
soon be long forgotten. As you
establish new routines, it seems
like there are 10 additional tasks
to handle each day, and cleaning,
while one of the most important
things on your to-do list, often
falls to the bottom due to lack of
time.
In fact, a recent CLR Brands
survey revealed that on average,
women spend 15.5 hours per
week cleaning in and around the
home while men spend 10 hours
per week a signifcant amount
of time. Ever wondered how
to clean more effectively and
quickly, to actually fnd some
extra time to spend on your
favorite things this fall?
One idea is to get the
whole family involved and
not let cleaning become an
insurmountable chore. With
some planning and teamwork,
you can make cleaning a fun
event in your household and
teach your kids (and signifcant
other) to take pride in their home
by taking responsibility to each
keep up with a few simple tasks
so your home never becomes a
disaster zone.
CLR (www.clrbrands.com)
cleaning experts share top tips to
help you make the most of your
time and clean more effciently.
For more inspiration on how
to transform your home, see
below.
Tips and tricks for speedy
fall cleaning:
* Figure out who likes doing
what best. If someone prefers
to handle the yard work and
the kids love polishing silver
or unloading the dishwasher,
divide it up so the act of doing
chores doesnt seem as tedious.
Or, designate a family cleaning
day and clarify who will be
doing what and when.
* Pre-game.
Before the big day,
assign each person
a room to prep so
that once you attack
with your gloves on
and product in hand,
youre not wasting
precious time and
energy fguring out
what goes in the junk
drawer, what should
be thrown out and
what should be kept.
* Multitask.
Several products
can do double (if
not triple) duty. For
example, CLR works
on showerheads, porcelain,
chrome, glassware, fberglass,
stainless steel and grout, and can
even remove sprinkler spots on
outdoor windows and remove
stains and mold smells from
your washing machine.
Other products clean grills,
smokers and tenacious garage
foor stains and/or brings the
sparkle back to delicate, hard-
to-clean surfaces like granite,
marble, Corian and tile.
* Get the hardest part
out of the way frst. Medical
professionals are taught to
sanitize a room by starting with
the dirtiest area and working
toward the cleanest, and you
should do the same. Tackle the
most time-consuming areas
(scum-soaked shower doors,
greasy grills, or dirt and dust on
top of fans) frst and then work
toward the less time-intensive
ones.
* Create rewards or foster
healthy competition with
kids. For enterprising children,
showing them how you can fnd
silver treasures and polish
them to sparkle is a great way to
get kids involved. You can even
make it a game by suggesting
that the person who can get an
old piece of silver the shiniest
will be awarded a prize.
(ARA) Heating, ventilation
and cooling companies are
among the top 10 industries with
the most complaints, according
to the Better Business Bureau.
So how can a homeowner
know if a duct-cleaning service
provider is doing a good job, or
just blowing hot air?
The EPA recommends you
interview companies that
comply with air duct cleaning
standards set by NADCA, the
HVAC Inspection, Maintenance
& Restoration Association. A
job done to NADCA standards
should include:
* A thorough inspection of
the HVAC system before doing
any work, and full disclosure of
any problems discovered during
the inspection.
* Examination of metal
ductwork at several random sites
to ensure the interior surfaces
are free of visible debris.
* Cleaning of both the supply
and return air ductwork.
* Removal, cleaning and
resetting of all supply registers,
return air grilles and diffusers.
* Cleaning of the supply and
return air plenums.
* Inspection and/or
installation of access panels.
* Cleaning of the air-stream
side of the heat exchanger and
cleaning of the secondary heat
exchanger.
* Removal, cleaning and
reassembly of the blower motor.
* Cleaning and inspection of
the blower blades and blower
compartment.
* Cleaning of the evaporator
coil, drain and pan. If the cooling
coil is clean, light should shine
through it when you point a
fashlight at the coils.
* Inspection and repair of the
coil fns if needed.
* Replacement of air flters.
* Washing of the air cleaner.

Lancaster, Pa. FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT 8 SEPTEMBER 16, 2012
(ARA) Red means stop,
green means go we learn
that axiom as children. When
it comes to home energy costs,
however, going green can
help homeowners put a stop
to runaway utility bills. And
maximizing your homes use
of natural light call it green
lighting is a great way
to boost your homes energy
effciency.
Here are three ways you can
put Mother Nature to work, and
use natural light to lower your
energy costs:
Minimize use of artifcial
lighting
Anyone whos ever paid an
electrical bill knows that the
simple act of turning on a light
can directly impact your monthly
expenses. Homeowners looking
for a long-term way to power
down their lighting costs may
consider Energy Star-qualifed
skylights a good investment.
While skylights cosmetic appeal
cant be argued, their value goes
far beyond good looks.
By admitting natural light
into your home, skylights can
help reduce use of artifcial light
sources and help you save on
electricity costs. Pair powered
venting skylights that come
with automatic rain sensors with
effciency-enhancing accessories
like designer blinds (available
in a varied palette of colors and
patterns), and you can improve
energy effciency as much as 37
percent, according to skylight
manufacturer Velux America.
And, with tubular products, you
can even bring natural light into
ground-foor rooms or spots
where a traditional skylight
may not work, such as a frst-
foor powder room, hallways, or
walk-in closets.
Reduce hot water costs
Long gone are the days when
solar powering your home was
an idealistic, but impractical
dream. Solar technology is
more useful, accessible and
cost-effective than ever. Solar
water heating systems are
becoming mainstream, and offer
homeowners a great, green way
to trim energy costs. Whats
more, the cost of installing
these systems has been steadily
declining as the technology
advances, and you may fnd
adding one makes you eligible
for tax credits or incentives from
your local, state or the federal
governments. You can calculate
the costs and possible paybacks
online at www.veluxusa.com.
Make home a healthier
place
Every year, ill health costs the
U.S. economy billions of dollars,
experts say, and your own health
woes can have a signifcant
impact on your pocketbook.
The health benefts of natural
light are well-documented,
from reducing the symptoms
of Seasonal Affective Disorder
(SAD) and promoting the
bodys production of Vitamin
D, to improving mood and even
learning ability.
Simply opening blinds and
curtains to admit more natural
light can directly affect the
mood inside your home not
to mention the mental state of
the people living in it. Take
your green lighting efforts to a
higher level by adding venting
skylights, and you can also help
improve the air quality inside
your home. While skylights
admit ample natural light,
their natural chimney effect
works with your windows to
bring in and circulate much
more healthful fresh air. They
also passively vent fumes and
dampness that can lead to mold
and mildew.
By incorporating natural light
and passive ventilation into their
home decor and improvements,
homeowners can put the brakes
on rising utility costs and give
the green light to energy savings.

energy savings the

Follow the trend and
give your kitchen and
bath a mend
(ARA) Does your home
feel tired, worn or outdated?
Do you walk into rooms and
wish they looked more like the
pictures in magazines? Youre
not alone. Many homeowners
who have put off home
improvement projects for some
time have decided to turn their
dreaming into reality - especially
in the kitchen and bathroom.
Bathroom bliss
Bathroom remodels have
moved into the top spot as the
most common remodeling
project, according to Remodeling
Magazines Cost vs. Value
Report 2011-2012. What are
most homeowners looking to
accomplish frst? According to
a National Association of Home
Builders (NAHB) survey, adding
a linen closet, marble or granite
double vanity and a shower with
multiple showerheads top the list.
It makes sense, adds Jack
Suvak, senior director of market
research and insights at Moen.
The bathroom is often the
only room for you time, so
homeowners want to create a
luxurious and relaxing retreat.
To add a bit of beauty and
bliss in the bath, start with the
countertop. Updating the current
material with a solid-surface
option will make an instant
visual update. Next, choose a
stylish new faucet, such as the
Moen Boardwalk faucet, to
accentuate the area.
The elegant collection,
available at Lowes, features
a blend of vintage design
and classic lines. The suite is
available in some of todays
most popular fnishes, Chrome
and Spot Resist Brushed Nickel
which is a unique fnish from
Moen which does exactly what
it says - resists fngerprints and
water spots.
Next, think storage. While a
linen closet tops the wanted
list, bath accessories are an
easier and more affordable way
to add additional storage and
organization. You can fnd towel
bars, towel rings, robe hooks and
paper holders in coordinating
designs to complete the look of
your new bath.
Finally, update your shower
to create a relaxing and spa-like
environment. Depending on
your budget, you can create the
ultimate retreat with a vertical
spa or simply upgrade your
current showerhead. Whether
you prefer a rainshower,
handheld shower, wall-mount
showerhead or even a
combination theres an option
in any price range.
Form and function in the
kitchen
Once youve updated your
bath; the kitchen, not far behind
in appeal, is a rewarding home
upgrade. Similar to the bath,
upgrading countertops which
consume a large area of the
kitchen is an ideal place to
start.
While laminate is the most
cost-effective choice, options
such as solid-surface, marble
or granite, offer an upscale
look, added durability and
functionality. In addition, these
upgrades allow you to enhance
your sink with an under-mount
version for a seamless look.
Finish off the counter area
with a high-end kitchen faucet.
High-arc pulldown styles are the
fastest growing kitchen faucet
category.
Finally, fooring, as one of
the largest surface areas in the
kitchen, is an ideal upgrade that
can set the tone of the room from
the bottom up. And, todays
fooring manufacturers offer
resilient fooring in a variety of
materials, colors and patterns
to meet your functionality, style
and price needs.
So, no matter what your
vision, follow the trend like
other homeowners, and soon you
can turn your dreams of a new
kitchen or bath into a reality. For

Cool weather crops
(ARA) The growing
season isnt over with the arrival
of cool weather. Until the frst
hard frost hits, you have plenty
of time to plant, pick and plate
cool-weather crops. Youll save
yourself some money in the
grocerys produce aisle too.
Fall is a great time for
gardening thanks to cooler,
milder temperatures, a decrease
in garden pests, and moister,
well-draining soil.
These conditions make it
ideal for crops that prefer cooler
weather. Some vegetables taste
even better when nipped by light
frost.
Plant now to ensure crops
will have time to mature before
the frst freeze in fall. Choose
varieties that mature quickly;
you can fnd the days to maturity
on plant tags. Starting with
transplants, rather than seed, will
help make the growing process
much easier.
If youve been
diligent in your
garden all summer,
you wont have
much work to
do preparing it
for cool crops. If
your garden got
a little ahead of
your efforts, dont
worry. It wont
take long to get
it into tip-top
shape for a second
season of planting.
Just follow these
simple steps:
Tidy up
Remove spent
plants, like early
planted beans,
cucumbers or
lettuce, since
theyre pretty
much done for the season and
can harbor pests. Clear away
holes left from pulling plants,
and get rid of weeds before they
go to seed. Throw away anything
distressed and compost the rest.
Discard any fallen fruits,
rotting produce can attract pests.
Take note of where everything
was planted so you can be sure
to rotate crops.
Set up the soil
Freshen garden soil by
removing the existing layer
of mulch and replace it. Straw
makes an excellent cover
because its easily scattered, its
also a favorite home for spiders
that will help control insect pests
in your garden. You can also use
a layer of shredded leaves for
mulch.
Loosen compacted soil and
fuff it up with a garden fork.
Major tilling isnt necessary;
just move soil enough to allow
new plant roots to settle in and
let water get through. Test soil
(you can buy a testing kit at
most garden retailers) to see if it
needs help. Add amendments, if
needed. At the very least, work
some compost in where your
plants will be growing.
If youll be using a cold
frame or hoop, set it up early
so that itll be ready to go when
you need it and you wont risk
damaging plants and roots once
they begin to grow.
Pick your plants
Starting with transplants will
buy you lots of time. Since plants
are six weeks or older when you
put them in the ground, youll
harvest sooner than if you start
from seed.
Look for transplants from an
established grower, like Bonnie
Plants. Sold in biodegradable,
environmentally friendly pots,
youll fnd fall varieties selected
for your geographic region at
most local garden retailers.
Here are some top crops for fall
planting:
* Top bunch collards This
hybrid is heavy yielding, early
maturing, and more uniform
than traditional varieties. They
grow best in full sun, tolerate
partial shade, are rich in vitamins
and sweetened by frost. Space
transplants 36 inches apart.
* Spinach A cool-
weather vegetable related to
beets and Swiss chard, Bonnies
Spinach is a fast-growing plant,
yielding many leaves in a short
time in fall. Although spinach
prefers full sun, its one of the
few vegetables that produce a
respectable harvest in partial
shade.
* Winterbor kale This
nutritious leafy green is a
vigorous producer that endures
winter easily. Cut the outer leaves
so that the center can continue
growing. Space transplants 12
inches apart.
* Early dividend broccoli
Popular, productive and easy
to grow, this broccoli is high
in fber and calcium. Space
transplants 18 inches apart.
* Mustard greens
Offering spicy hot leaves, this is
a very fast-growing, nutritious
vegetable, and always tastes
sweeter when nipped by frost.
Space plants 12 inches apart.
* Bonnie hybrid cabbage
Grows large, round, blue-green
heads. Cabbage is especially
high in beta-carotene, vitamin C,
K and fber.
Get started now to ensure your
fall harvest is healthy, hefty and
fulflling. With preparation, the
right plants and some diligence,
you can bet on fresh, low-cost
produce well into fall.

Dreamland bedding
Making sure your little one
has a cozy, restful space to sleep
is important, and balancing
comfort with creativity is easier
and less costly than you might
think.
There are endless bedroom
options to suit every style and
age, and letting children choose
bedding or a quilt cover they
love can make their bedtime
routine go more smoothly.
Matching pillows can help
create a cohesive look, and fun
cushions or bright body pillows
can help kids sit comfortably on
the foor with a book or game.
Whether they choose polka
dots, bright patterns, cartoon
images or solid white, a new
design thats all their own
will make bed and naptime
something they may actually
look forward to.
Dont worry about matching
the bedding to other decoration
in the room dreams are fun
and unpredictable, so let your
childs preference lead the way.
Storage
Crayons, and teddy bears,
and games, oh my! Storing all of
your childs precious belongings
can be challenging, especially if
the room is small.
To avoid the warzone look,
invest in a few storage options
that will improve the look of
your childs room while teaching
him to clean up after himself.
Closed cabinets and clear
tubs are great for storing stuffed
animals, craft items and action
fgures, while open bookshelves
work well for books, games and
puzzles.
Open cubby systems are
also a good way to teach young
children organization skills
while keeping their favorite toys
easily accessible.
Color-coded bins can help
keep kids rooms bright and
youthful while keeping their
things off of the foor.
With a little time and minimal
cost, you can help transform
your childs room into the
perfect place to learn, dream and
play for years to come.
Kids rooms
Inexpensive ways to update your home
Oftentimes, buying a home
opens up a bottomless pit of
opportunities for projects and
improvements. While some
homeowners engage in different
repairs and fx-ups out of
necessity, many others like to
freshen-up their spaces out of
personal preference instead of
need. But even the most well-
intentioned projects can be
waylaid if budgets are tight.
What many homeowners
may not realize is that there are
many ways to make updates
and changes to a home that do
not require a major overhaul or
a large price tag. The following
are projects that wont break the
bank.
1. Move around furniture.
You may be able to change the
look of a room without spending
any money. Interior designers
know how to arrange furniture
for maximum appeal, but the
average homeowner can do it,
too. Find a focal point in the
room and angle the furniture
toward it. Dont make the focal
point the television, however.
Try changing the placement of
chairs and sofas. Simply moving
a curio cabinet from one corner
to another may also make a
difference.
2. Add lighting. Lighting at
different levels in the room can
create a vibrant impact. Many
homeowners mistakenly put in a
couple of table lamps and think
that will be adequate. However,
properly illuminating a room
means varying the lighting
to create different moods at
different times. Plus, more light
can make a room feel more
welcoming.
3. Add new pillows or
drapes. Changing a few aspects
of a room can give it an entirely
new look. If you want to add
a splash of color but dont
know what to do, think about
incorporating some new throw
pillows or change the curtains.
An accessory here and there in a
bright color also can incorporate
a new hue without it being
overwhelming.
4. Change knobs or small
accents. Give a room a new look
by focusing on the small details.
Switch out cabinet knobs for
something updated and modern.
Take inventory of wall outlets
and light switches and think
about selecting new ones that
coordinate with your home
decor.
5. Use plants. Empty corners
or spots youre not certain
how to fll may beneft from a
plant. Plants are inexpensive
ways to add instant color and
visual appeal to a room. Plus,
having live plants can help
improve indoor air by fltering
out contaminants. A home with
plants also feels more cozy.
6. Hang new wall art. It may
be time to look at your photos
and artwork and make a few
adjustments. Finding new prints
to hang could instantly change
a rooms ambience. And you
neednt spend a lot of money on
professional photography, either.
Grab your camera and take a
few close-up shots of fowers
or take in a landscape scenery.
Many of todays home printers
can produce professional-quality
prints in minutes.
7. Try a new coat of paint.
After youve exhausted other
avenues, choosing a new paint
color may be the new look you
desire. Painting is one of the least
expensive yet most dramatic
methods of changing a homes
interior. With dozens of hues to
choose from, and new apps that
enable you to take snapshots of
things in nature or in your life
and match them up to a paint
color, you will have scores of
opportunities to explore fresh
new colors for your home.
When you get inspired to
make improvements to the home
but fear how much it may take
out of your wallet, consider
inexpensive tricks that can
induce a big wow factor.
Floor squeaks
- continued from page 4
of the provided screws into the
joist where the squeak exists.
The screw will tighten the
foor planks back onto the joist
without ruining the foor or
having to go underneath it. The
alignment fxture has a screw
gripper on one side that will
snap off the screw head so there
are no dangerous nails or screws
sticking out of the carpet.
Doing away with creaky
foors can be a big aid when it
comes time to sell a home. There
is nothing more unattractive
to prospective homebuyers
than noisy squeaks and creaks
coming from the foor. By
eliminating squeaks, youll be
able to keep potential buyers
attention focused on the beauty
of your home.
Parents with babies or small
children will also appreciate
giving their little ones a good
nights rest, free from loud
creaks. More importantly, hungry
members of the household
will fnally be able to reach the
refrigerator at midnight without
waking up the entire household.
