GUIDELINES FOR CONDUCTING THE INCLINING EXPERIMENT (FOR SMALL BOATS LESS THAN 24 METERS)

Person in charge: 1. A competent person should be designated in charge of the preparation and execution of the inclining test. 2. The persons conducting the test should be satisfied that the vessel has adequate, positive stability and acceptable stress levels during the test. Information to be submitted: 1. The instructi on containing the information of date and location of the test, responsible person, stability, Inclining weights, schemes of inclining weight positions etc., should be presented before the inclining Test. The followin g information should be available at the time of the Inclining test as 2. necessary: (A) General arrangement plan (B) Tank capacity plan (C) Hydrostatic curves (D) Draft marks locations. The inclining test condition: 1. Prior to the inclining test, lists of all items, which are to be added, removed, or relocated should be prepared. These weights and their locations should be accurately recorded. 2. The total value of missing weights should not exceed 2 percent & surplus weights, excluding liquid ballast should not exceed 4 percent of the light ship displacement. 3. All objects should be secured in their regula r positions. All weights, which may swing, or shift must be secured in their position. If more tha n one sea stowage p osition is possible, th e actual stowage position used during the test should be recorded. 4. The ship should be cle ared of r esidues of cargo, tools, debris, scaffolding and any other items, which are not required on board. 5. All bilge water and other extraneous standi ng liquids must be removed. When draining individual tan ks is impracticable, allowances f or su ch liquids should be at the discretion of the Surveyor. 6. All service tanks and machinery plant piping are to be filled as for the working condition. 7. All spaces should be safe for inspection. Tank contents: 1. Preferably, all tanks should be either full or empty. The number of tanks containing liquids should be kept to a minimum. 2. Soundings and density of liquids in tanks should be taken. Shapes of tanks, which are partly filled, are to be known in order to determine the free liquid surface effect. 3. Adequate measures are to be tak en to preclude air pockets in completely full tanks. All connections between tanks are to be closed and all empty tanks are to be adequately dried. Mooring Arrangements and Environmental Conditions: 1. Mooring lines should be free of any tension in the transverse direction of the ship during the reading after each wei ght shift. Th e ship should be located in a calm , protected area free from external forces. The dep th of water under the hull should be sufficient to en sure that the hull will be 2. entirely free of the b ottom. Th e te st should not b e conducted under adverse wind, wave and current conditions.

3. Longitudinal mooring lines should be as long as practicable. (Bow and stern lines on both sides of the ship attached at or near the centerline). 4. The ships gangway sh ould be in the s towed position and any shore gangway removed during the inclining test. As few cables, hoses, etc. as possible should be connected to shore. Inclining Weights: 1. For the inclining test, solid inclining weight s normally should be used. Each weight is to be compact, impervious to water and shaped such that its cen ter of gravity may be accurately determined. Not fewer than four weights (or sets of weights) be used, each approximately equal in mass, and that the incl ining weights (or sets of weights) be positioned as symmetricall y as possible and parallel to the center line. 2. Each inclining weight should be marked with an identification number. The inclining weights should be weighed with a calibrated instrument to the satisfaction of the Surveyor. 3. The minimum deflection/difference of Pendulum, to each side of the initial position, corresponding to the total weight should be 80 mm. 4. T he weights used shall be sufficient to provide a minimum of 2 degree and a maximum of four-degree heel to each side. 5. It is recommended that inclinometers/U-tubes or other measuring devices only be used in conjunction with at least one pendulum. Trim and Stability: 1. The vessel should be upright prior to the inclining. However, an initial list of the ship not exceeding 0.5 i.e. degree is permissible . 2. The estimated initial meta-centric height should be at least 0.20 m. Draught and Water Density Measurements: 1. Draught / freeboard sh ould be measur ed immediately before and verified after the test, to ensure that no significant changes in vessel's condition have occurred during the test. 2. Draughts / freeboards should be measured at fore and aft and mid-ship draught marks at both sides. I f the freeboards are not measured from the upper edge of deck line at side of freeboard deck or at the same frame locations as the draught marks, the locations and v ertical datum must be stated. 3. A suitable boat with low freeboard should be available for the draught measurements. 4. Sufficient water samples are to be taken at suitable locations and depths to enable accurate assessment of water density. Weight shift and Inclining Measurement: 1. The inclining weight positions should be marked on the deck to ensure that consistency in placemen t is achieved. The tra nsverse shift di stance i s t o b e as gre at as practicable and appreciable changes in longitudinal or vertical position when movi ng port to starboard and vice versa are to be avoided.

2. The pendulu m length is to be measured from its point of suspension to the recording batten on which deflections are read. 3. Personnel sh ould be instructed to remain on their assigned positions while inclination readings are being taken and a ch eck should be m ade that all mooring lines, etc., remain slack following each weight shift until all deflections have been taken and recorded. 4. The weather condition s, i.e., wind speed and direction relative to the vessel, sea state, air and water temperatures, etc., during the test are to be recorded. 5. A plot of heeling moment against the tangent of the heel angle should be run during the test to ensure that acceptable data are being obtained. Sequence of weight shift:

The recommended sequence of weight shift is indicated in the table below.

Communication Arrangements: 1. Means for communicating with the various people involved in moving the weights and persons involved in obtaining the readings at the pendulums are to be provided. If, during the course of an inclining test, circumstances arise such that the aforesaid requirements are not complied with, the att ending Surveyor m ay advise the Person in Charge that the results might not be accepted.
