Team Evesham is gearing up for its
philanthropic ride to raise money and
awareness for multiple sclerosis in the
MS City to Shore bike ride on Saturday,
Sept. 29.
The cycling team membership is open
to anyone without dues. Practices can
draw up to 109 team members. They
meet every Sunday morning to train for
the upcoming charity events.
We started Team Evesham in 2008,
and it was a group of people who want-
ed to cycle and exercise and do things for
the community, said Sandy Student,
captain and organizer of Team Eve-
sham. The first year we had eight
founding members, and we raised about
$14,000 for MS.
According to the National Multiple
Sclerosis Societys website, multiple
sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling
disease that attacks the central nervous
system, which is made up of the brain,
spinal cord and optic nerves. Symptoms
may be mild, such as numbness in the
limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or
loss of vision. The disease is unpre-

The Evesham Police Depart-
ments Citizens Police Academy
will open Oct. 2.
The academy includes three-
hour classes weekly for eight
weeks and will offer classroom
education in crime scenes, an
overview of the department and a
ride-along with an officer.
As the department strives for
transparency in its operations,
the Citizens Police Academy pro-
vides a hands-on opportunity to
educate the citizens of Evesham
Township on the operations of
the department while obtaining
valuable feedback from the citi-
zens to enhance police and com-
munity relations, the depart-
ment said in a release.
Its a way to bring the citizens,
business owners and police to-
gether, said Lt. Kevin Teschko,
coordinator of the Citizens Police
Academy. Its a way to explain
the way we carry out investiga-
tions and bring the community
together.
Similar programs are already
being held in other states. includ-
ing California and Florida. Eve-
sham found inspiration in what
was offered in those other com-
munities programs.
Its very progressive out west
and in the south. Out west is
where I found some of the most
programs, Teschko said.
Applicants were required to be
18 years or older, according to
Teschko.
Submissions for the program
were accepted through Sept. 15,
and each candidate was reviewed
closely before acceptance into the
program.
Whoever requests to come
gets a brief background check.
Once theyve passed, well let
them know if weve accepted
them, Teschko said.
Hopefuls included residents
ranging in age from 18 and 19
years old to 60 years old. Appli-
cants werent restricted to resi-
dents. Business owners in Eve-
sham who may not live in town
but own a business within city
limits, were welcomed and ap-
plied to the police academy.
According to Teschko, the di-
versity in applicants is, a good
reflection of the township.
Each week, classes will follow a
structured itinerary for students
in the program. According to
Teschko, week one will be an in-
troduction of the program and
what to expect, and week two will
be a tour of the department. Stu-

We started publicizing our
bike rides, and, in 2009, we had 27
people for Bike MS. In 2010, we
had 56 members. Its been grow-
ing ever since, and we do more
than just the MS ride now, Stu-
dent said.
The team trains throughout
the year for a variety of fundrais-
ing events in the area.
We train in the winter time if
theres no snow or ice on the
ground. Were all about doing
things; so were all about chari-
ties. This year well raise over
$150,000 for charities, said Stu-
dent.
The fundraising for the team
doesnt end at the cycling events.
They also give back to the com-
munity during the holiday sea-
son.
We do other things in the com-
munity, well do meals for seniors
around the holidays along with a
team holiday party, said Student.
The training for Team Eve-
sham is a weekly event, normally
drawing more than 100 cyclists in
preparation for the next event, or
to simply learn to cycle and work-
out.
No group of riders for the
workout is bigger than 15 people
with a ride leader. Maps of the
route are posted online to the
teams website Wednesdays be-
fore the Sunday morning ride.
The training route can be any-
where from 25 miles to 50 miles
depending on the time of the sea-
son and how far the team is into
training.
We try to keep it very safe. We
want people to enjoy it, Student
said.
Its one of those things you
need to make the time to do it,
and its a social event as well. Im
looking forward to learning how

Bonefish Grill. Id like to do as
much as time allows. Im looking

The team meets at the Prome-
nade at Sagemore every Sunday
at 7:30 a.m. for coffee at Panera.

G
ov. Christie last week said he
increased funding for schools
statewide by almost $200 mil-
lion. He also said that brought state
support for schools to its highest level
ever.
Now, while providing a quality edu-
cation requires more than just tossing
around dollars, theres no doubt that
local districts are grateful for the sup-
port. They remember all too well re-
cent years when state support was
slashed and tax-hike caps put in place.
Seeing more funds from the state no
doubt makes life a bit easier for all of
them.
When Christie slashed state funding
for schools shortly after taking office,
it indeed created hardship. But it also
made boards of education and admin-
istrators take a step back and rethink
how things are done.
One of the benefits weve seen is a
willingness and even encouragement
on the part of school districts to in-
volve the public in the budget process.
Thats not to say that some districts
werent actively courting public sup-
port before the budget cuts. But, when
everyone found themselves in the same
difficult situation, having to make
tough decisions about taxes and spend-
ing, it seemed like there was new em-
phasis on building public involvement.
We think school board member is
one of the toughest jobs around. Try-
ing to balance the mandate of provid-
ing children with a quality education
with keeping taxes as low as possible is
not easy.
But school boards responded. They
not only opened up the budget process,
they began to seek out creative ways to
save and raise money. They created
partnerships with other districts, for
example. Some are even looking at in-
volving corporate partners who want
to advertise on school property.
Yes, the added state money is wel-
come. But lets also remember that the
sharp budget cuts from a few years
ago, though painful at the time, also led
to improvements.

Doing things differently
The governor talked about increased
state support for schools. No doubt
that was good news for school board
members and administrators. But lets
not overlook the progress that came
from the budget cuts a few years ago.
Marlton Elks is kicking off the fall with
several great programs. Elks Scholarship
program starts in September and they will
soon be sending information to local high
schools for seniors to apply.
Elks, locally, at a state level and on a na-
tional level, provide scholarships to stu-
dents from local high schools across the
country. The Elks National Foundation will
be giving 500 special four-year awards,
ranging from $1,000 to $15,000 for the top
award, 22 of which will go to New Jersey
seniors. The State Elks Association of New
Jersey will give an additional 96 allocated
awards of $700 each throughout the state.
The Elks National Foundation awards
over $2.2 million every year to deserving
seniors, while the State Association gives
an additional $96,000 in scholarships. The
winners are based on financial need, lead-
ership, and scholarship.
Over the past few years Marlton has had
several scholarship winners. Including two
who garnered national rewards.
Applications need to be submitted by
Dec. 7 to Marlton Elks. Applications are
available from school counselors, or from
the national Elks website at
www.elks.org/enf/scholars/legacy.cfm.

ship program is available from John
