Knowledge Utilization (KU) ___ The procedures of my project synthesize basic and applied research into procedures, policies, programs, and interventions; this is called translational research. ___ Its procedures involve the study of interventions/practical applications already created in order to develop additional interventions; sometimes called synthesis. Caveat: Important to include and take into consideration research, theory, and other knowledge about the situations and persons for whom the practice applications are intended . ___ The project may also involve the modification of existing interventions to fit new populations.
Design and Development (D & D) ___ My project modifies exiting technologies or develops new ones, such as intervention programs, treatment modalities, assessment tools. ___ Its procedures incorporate the idea that design and development involves exchanges between researchers on social work faculties and practitioners in the field. ___ It follows all or part of the six stages of D & D:
___ problem analysis & project planning ___ problem analysis: begin lit review, talk with experts, write down practice experience, do a needs assessment ___ project planning: feasibility & goals
___ design of the project (complicated) ___ early development & pilot testing (may be multiple iterations) ___ field testquasi-experiments and rcts, both with qualitative components ___ dissemination

This is a worksheet for a PhD-level course in theory and model development. The purpose of the exercise is to guide students through an application of the ideas related to developmental intervention research (DIR). DIR is a set of procedures intended to bring the best we know to applications that are intended to improve quality of life in specified domains, such as gender identity, parenting, and promotion of the interests of persons with limited access to economic, social, spiritual, and artistic opportunities.
