Determine whether each of the following integrals converges or diverges. Explain why. (If they converge, you dont have to determine what they converge to.) a.
Compare this to = , which diverges (since the exponent on in the denominator is less than 1). 1 ( ) 1 + 1 + 1 lim = lim ( )( ) = lim ( ) + 1 1 = lim (1 + ) = 1 We got a positive, finite result, so both integrals do the same thing. Since b. , which is greater than . ) diverges, must also diverge.
Compare this to
1 = lim = lim [ ] = lim ( + = 0 + = This integral converges, so the original integral also converges.

Or, you could do this one as we did in chapter 7. This differential equation is separable. Give it a try.
3. Sketch the following parametric curves. a. = , = 5, < < We have = ( ) 5, so plugging in for , we get = 5. But your sketch should not include the entire parabola; since = , cannot take any negative values. We only get the right-hand side of the parabola.
b. = sin 2 , = cos 2 , 0 We have sin 2 + cos 2 = 1 for any value of , so the curve is really just + = 1. Its a circle with radius 1. But as with the last problem, we dont get the whole circle. For all of our points on the curve, is the sine of a number between 0 and ; as a result, will never be negative. So we only get the right half of the circle.
4. For each of the following functions (both given in parametric form), find and .

5. a. Rewrite the relation = in terms of polar coordinates. (No need to simplify your final equation.) = = ( sin )
b. Rewrite the relation sin 2 = 2 in terms of Cartesian coordinates. (Again, no need to simplify.) sin 2 = 2 (2 sin cos ) = 2 sin cos = 1 ( cos )( sin ) = 1 = 1
6. a. Sketch the graph of = sin . Is this graph symmetric about the -axis? About the -axis? About the origin? (Prove any symmetries you find.) Heres the graph, which you can get by plotting points:
Once we have the graph, it appears that the graph is symmetric about the -axis; the graph makes it obvious that the other two symmetries are not there. To prove symmetry about the -axis, replace (, ) with (, ). = = 3 sin( ) 2
We get the same function when we make this substitution, so the graph is symmetric about the -axis.
6. b. Sketch the graph of = cos .
= cos() = cos
We get the same function when we make this substitution, so the graph is symmetric about the -axis.
