SC Law Office of Career Services


By Teresa Cajot At the University of South Carolina School of Law in the city of Columbia, the five members of the Office of Career Services are responsible for guiding students and alumni in all areas of professional development. In addition to individual counseling and interview programs, the office is also behind many of the law schools instructional programs, mock interview offerings, and career networking opportunities.

Phyllis B. Burkhard, the Director of Career Services, is available for individualized counseling sessions and is heavily involved in the office operations as a whole. The University of South Carolina School of Law graduate brings eight years of litigation experience with her to her position. Immediately following law school she worked with the Columbia law firm that is now known as Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd. Prior to law school, she was an English teacher and counselor in Ohio. She earned her MA in Education/Counseling from Ohio State University and holds a BA in English from Ohio University. As the Associate Director of the Office of Career Services since 2010, Jill Kunkle, also takes scheduled counseling appointments as well as short drop in visits. She too holds a JD from the University of South Carolina School of Law. After earning her JD, Kunkle joined the firm now known as Harvey & Vallini, LLC, where she concentrated on civil litigation, real estate transactions, and estate planning. She holds a BS in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina. The office recently welcomed Associate Director Yvonne A. Visser, who earned her undergraduate degree from the

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and her MA from the University of South Carolina. Following her graduation in 1988, Visser took on employment with a nationally respected company that handles the planning and design of justice system facilities. She has also worked for the South Carolina Judicial Department and the South Carolina Bar, where she collaborated with judges and attorneys to provide members of the judiciary and the bar with training programs. From 1998 to 2011 she worked as the Director of Curriculum Administration for the National District Attorneys Association National Advocacy Center. Also crucial to the Office of Career Services are Susan Lamprey and Susan Watts, the Student Services & Job Posting Coordinators. As the On-Campus & Resume Collection Coordinator, Lamprey is responsible for working with law firms, the judiciary, corporations, government agencies, and other employers to develop interview events, register on Symplicity, or register for the resume collect program.
