Aluminum Magnesium

Hydroxide Maxide
350mg/150mg/5mg Oral Suspension ANTACID FORMULATION: Each 5mL suspension contains Aluminum Hydroxide................................350mg Magnesium Hydroxide.............................150mg Description: Maxide contains two different medicines. These are Aluminum Hydroxide (Al2(OH)3) and Magnesium Hydroxide (Mg(OH)2. They belong to a group of medicines called antacids. Aluminum Hydroxide is a white or almost white, translucent, viscous, colloidal gel. Magnesium hydroxide is a bulky white powder which is practically insoluble in water and in alcohol. PHARMACOLOGY: PHARMACODYNAMICS: Antacids works by lowering the amount of acid in your stomach. PHARMACOKINETICS: Aluminum Hydroxide, given orally, slowly reacts with the hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form soluble aluminum chloride, some of which is absorbed. The presence of food or other factors prolongs the availability of aluminum hydroxide to react. Magnesium hydroxide, given orally, reacts relatively rapidly with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form magnesium chloride and water. Mechanism of Action: Neutralizes gastric acid, increases gastric pH. Absorption: About 30% of the magnesium ions are absorbed from the small intestine, as described for magnesium salts. Metabolism: Aluminium hydroxide: Absorbed Al ions are eliminated in the urine (0.1-0.5 mg of Al in aluminum-containing antacid is absorbed from standard daily doses of antacid), Insoluble or poorly absorbed Al salts in the intestines are excreted in feces Magnesium hydroxide: absorbed Mg ions (up to 30%) are eliminated in urine, unabsorbed drug is excreted in feces. INDICATIONS: Aluminum Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide are antacids that are used for the relief of esophageal reflux, acid indigestion, heartburn, dyspepsia, and sour stomach. It is also used for the prevention of stress ulceration and GI bleeding and to promote healing of peptic ulcers. CONTRAINDICATIONS: These are contraindicated to patients with hypersensitivity to the drug as well as patients with renal disease, appendicitis, constipation, osteomalacia, appendicitis, fecal impaction and intestinal obstruction. PRECAUTIONS: The drug may increase or decrease the rate and/or

ADVERSE EFFECTS: The most frequent adverse effect of aluminum antacids is constipation. Decreased bowel motility, dehydration, or fluid restriction may predispose patients to intestinal obstruction. Hemorrhoids and fissures, or fecal impaction may occur. Magnesium containing antacids cause a laxative effect and frequent administration of these antacids alone often cannot be tolerated; repeated doses cause diarrhea which may cause fluid and electrolyte imbalances. The combination of aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide balances the adverse effects of diarrhea from magnesium hydroxide and constipation from aluminum hydroxide. WARNING: Excessive doses of these drugs may cause high levels of these in the blood of patients with renal impairment. Hypermagnasemia may also occur usually in patients with renal impairment. DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION: Oral: 5-10 mL, 4-6 times/day, between meals and at bedtime; may be used every hour for severe symptoms. Or, as prescribed by the doctor. USE IN PREGNANCY AND LACTATION Pregnancy risk factor C. SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE: Symptoms of overdosage are anorexia, malaise and muscle weakness. Hypotension, nausea, vomiting, ECG change, respiratory of mental depressions, and coma have also been reported with large doses of magnesium in patients with severe kidney disease. INFORMATION FOR THE PATIENT: Patient should be informed about the signs and symptoms of serious hepatic damage. Patient should be advised that if any sign of overdosage occurs, they should stop the drug promptly and consult their physician. If the patient misses a dose, he should take the dose and the subsequent doses at the recommended time. Do not double the dose unless recommended by the doctor. Do not use the drug beyond the date of expiration. AVAILABILITY: Maxide 60ml Oral Suspension STORAGE CONDITIONS: Keep the product out of reach and sight of children.
