MEL-311 Machine Element Design, Credits: 5 (3-1-2) (A) Objective of the courseThe main objective of this course is to impart training to students through the teaching (lecture, tutorial and practical) about how to apply the concepts of stress analysis, theories of failure and material science in analyzing, designing and/or selecting commonly used machine elements. Moreover, additional objective is to make aware about computer based techniques in the design of machine elements.

(B) Overview of the coursePre-requisites: AML-140: Mechanics of Solids (3-1-0) MEP-201: Mechanical Engineering Drawing (1-0-4) MEP-202: Design Innovation and Manufacturing (0-0-4) MEL-211: Kinematics and Dynamics of Machines (3-0-2) Syllabus:
1. Introduction, Mechanical Engineering Design vis--vis Solid Mechanics, Factor of safety, Standards and design equations, Selection of materials and processes, Standard numbering system including BIS designations of materials, Application of theories of failure to design, Design procedure and its application to static strength. Design of elements subjected to simple loading: Screws including power screw, Bolted joints including eccentricity loaded joints, Axles, Coupling, Clutches, and Brakes. Introduction to design for fatigue strength: Endurance and modifying factors, surface strength, Review of design procedure of fatigue failure with application to the design of bolts and springs subjected to fatigue loading. Instructions for practical and tutorialMaintain two tutorial copies (plain register) and two practical copies (hard bound, one page plain and one ruled). Write your name, entry number, group number and course name on the sticker and paste it on front page of each copy. Always come with main text book (Machine Design by Norton) and scientific calculator in every class i.e. lectures, tutorial, and practical. All the sketches in tutorial and practical copies must be done using pencil and scale. Only works done in tutorial and practical copies in respective classes will be checked for marking (work done at your residence will be ignored).

Attendance and compensation policy

Every student must attend minimum 75% of total classes held (i. e. Lecture, Tutorial, and Practical). In case attendance is less than 75%, one will be awarded one grade less than the grade achieved. In case one misses any practical/tutorial class, please complete it in buffer week (last week of the semester). Please do not go in other groups to adjust your missing practical or tutorial. If one wishes to change his/her present practical/tutorial group, please write a letter to course coordinator with valid reason and get it forwarded by your course advisor, programme coordinator, and the faculty member engaging the practical/tutorial of the group (planning to leave the group) and faculty member engaging the practical/tutorial group (planning to join the group). This letter should be given to course coordinator within 4-5 working days time; else your attendance and mark records will be maintained as per your original group.
