Support for voter restriction plummets among likely Minnesota voters, continuing recent trend ST. PAUL (September 23, 2012) A new public poll released this morning by the Star Tribune and conducted by the highly respected polling firm of Mason Dixon indicates that support for the Voter Restriction Amendment continues to wane. The poll, conducted September 17-19, shows that just 52- percent of Minnesotans support the amendment, while 44-percent oppose. Four percent of those polled remain undecided. These numbers indicate a dramatic shift in public opinion from the last Star Tribune poll conducted in May of 2011, when 80-percent of Minnesotans supported a possible constitutional amendment restricting voting. The Mason Dixon poll also confirms a continuing shift among voters indicated in the Public Policy Polling survey released on September 12. Our Vote Our Future, the official statewide campaign to defeat the Voter Restriction Amendment issued the following statement from Campaign Manager Luchelle Stevens: This poll is the latest indicator that Minnesotans are realizing the serious costs and consequences of this poorly written amendment. Voters in this state are the most informed and engaged in the nation. As they learn that the Voter Restriction Amendment isnt a simple matter of presenting a photo ID at the polls, but a complete overhaul of our election system, they oppose it. The poll confirms Minnesotans are hesitant to make a drastic change to the states constitution without details. For something as important as changing our constitution and our nationally recognized voting system, the legislature needs to get it right. Each day more and more Minnesotans are taking a closer look at the amendment and seeing that the legislature got this wrong. It is poorly written, way too complicated and has serious consequences for all Minnesotans. On November 6, Minnesota will reject this flawed amendment and send it back to the legislature.
