THE KUPPUSWAMI SASTRI RESEARCH INSTITUTE SEEKS YOUR URGENT SUPPORT

History
KSRI was founded in Chennai in 1945 as a tribute to Prof Kuppuswami Sastri, a great scholar and the first principal of Madras Sanskrit College, to conduct worldclass research in Sanskrit and Indological studies. Dr S Radhakrishnan, former President of India, served as the President of KSRI for more than two decades. Several eminent personalities such as Rt. Honorable V Srinivasa Sastri, Sir C P Ramaswamy Iyer, and Dr A Lakshmanaswamy Mudaliar were actively associated with KSRI. Padma Bhushan Dr.V.Raghavan, a great scholar and a Sahitya Akademi Prize winner, was the founder-secretary and mainstay of the Institute. KSRI, a private, non-profit organization, operates from three buildings built on 7000 sq ft land in Mylapore, Chennai. KSRI received government assistance in the 80s to conduct research but now it primarily relies on funds raised through donations to carry out its activities, maintain its infrastructure, and pay the dozen or so academic and support staff.

Library
The KSRI library houses about 60,000 books and research journals related to Sanskrit and Indological studies published in Sanskrit, English, many major Indian languages, and also Russian, French, German and Japanese. There is an extensive collection of over 1,000 palm-leaf and paper manuscripts from as early th as the19 century. The library follows special handling techniques and has an air-conditioned facility to preserve delicate items in its possession. KSRI has classified its vast library collection into more than 40 subjects such as Arts, Philosophy, Literature, Vedic Studies, Yoga, Religion, Mythology, Science Mathematics, Medicine, and Astronomy. The library offers online search facility, reprography, and reference services to research scholars. The library has plans to digitize its contents to make them readily available to current scholars and also to preserve them for future generations.

Research
KSRI has produced numerous M Phil and Ph D scholars during the last two decades in affiliation with the University of Madras. KSRIs research interests include diverse topics such as Language, Literature, Grammar, Yoga, Psychology, Philosophy, Law and Jurisprudence, Music and Dance, Vedic Studies, Sports, Politics, Mythology, and so on. Sanskrit literature has abundant information on modern, contemporary topics as well. KSRI has researched Women Rights in Dharmasastra texts, Dream Motif, Nephology (science of clouds), Caturyuga calendar, Svarodaya science (a peculiar method of breath control), and Town planning for example. KSRI has also remained a home for many foreign scholars from Europe, USA, Canada, Asia, Australia, and South America. Currently, it has an MOU with Oslo University, Norway to offer Sanskrit classes to its graduate students.

Publications, Seminars, and Conferences


KSRI has been issuing the internationally acclaimed Journal of Oriental Research since its inception. The Institute has published more than 100 books and monographs on a wide range of topics. KSRI has organized more than 300 lectures and several national and international seminars and conferences, including those sponsored by the Univ. of Madras, Govt. of India, Indian Council for Philosophical Research, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, and Sahitya Akademi.

Funding Plan for a Secure Future


KSRI currently relies mainly on private donations and seeks urgent help to continue in its glorious research tradition. With the support of philanthropists, KSRI wants to create a reliable source of funding in the form of a corpus fund of 2 Million US Dollars that will allow KSRI to preserve the wealth of knowledge for many generations to come, invest in its infrastructure, offer competitive remuneration to its research and support staff, and provide scholarship to encourage research and learning. In addition, KSRI welcomes endowments and sponsorship to support specific research projects and KSRI will duly acknowledge the sponsors (current list of projects available upon request). KSRI appreciates the timely help from donors which is 100% income tax-exempt in India under 35 (iii) (i) of IT Act 1961.
