OBJECTIVES To measure the resistance to the polishing action. To determine how quickly a sample of aggregate will become 'polished' To calculates a Polished Stone Value for aggregates used in road surfaces, which gives a measure of the resistance to skidding.

INTRODUCTION The PSV of an aggregate is a measure of the resistance of an aggregate to polishing. The value is established by subjecting the aggregate to a standard polishing process, and then testing the aggregate with the Portable Skid Resistance Tester to determine its PSV.

The action of road vehicle tyres on road surfaces results in polishing of the top, exposed aggregate surface, and its state of polish is one of the main factors affecting the resistance to skidding.

Resistance to this polishing action is determined principally by the inherent qualities of the aggregate itself. A later section of this memorandum gives some information about the polishing resistant qualities of different sources of aggregate.

The degree of polish of the specimens is then measured by means of the portable skid resistance tester (using a special narrow slider, shorter test length and supplementary scale) under carefully controlled conditions. Control specimens are used to condition and check the slider before the test; also a pair of control specimens is included in each test run of fourteen specimens to check the entire procedure and to allow for adjustment of the result to compensate for minor variations in the polishing and or friction testing. Results are expressed as 'polished stone values' (PSVs), the mean of the five test specimens of each aggregate.

PROCEDURES

1.

As the preparation of specimens and the polishing process (using accelerated polishing machine takes many hours, this will have been done, in accordance with BS 812, in advance of the laboratory session.

2.

The specimen is clamped into the holder in such a way that the slider of the pendulum traverses it in the same direction as it has been trafficked in the polishing machine. The height of the suspension axis of the pendulum is then adjusted, as described for the road test, so that the slider traverses a length of 76 0.5 mm.

3.

The specimen and the slider are then thoroughly wetted and five readings (F scale unit x 100) are taken as described for the road test. The specimen and slider are thoroughly wetted before each reading. The mean of the last three readings is then recorded.

4.

The mean value as determined is reported as the PSV

ANALYSIS

Mean for polish stone value (PSV) of the sample is 50.9 MEAN= Mean for this test is 50.9 The property that an aggregate possesses which gives it a good polish stone value (PSV) is often referred to as its' MICRO-TEXTURE. Aggregates that retain a significant microtexture after polishing are the aggregates that give good resistance to skidding, It have a high Polished Stone Value The use of high PSV aggregate in a bituminous mixture laid as a surface course will produce a road surface with a high Skid Resistance Value (SRV), subject to the road surface having sufficient texture (MACRO-TEXTURE).

The initial SRV of the road surface will improve as the bitumen on the surface of the aggregate is worn away Aggregate that has a PSV over 50 is regarded as a High Skid Resistant Aggregate, but aggregate with a PSV over 65 is needed for particularly high stressed sites In the result, aggregate in the sample has high skid resistant aggregate. It has 50.9.

CONCLUSION

The higher the polish stone value(PSV) figure the greater resistance the aggregate has to polishing, and the greater the ability the aggregate has to retain its inherent very fine surface texture.

DISCUSSION

Discussion - PSV a) Report the geological name, source quarry and description of the rock. b) Recommend the type of road and traffic volume for which the aggregate is a suitable surfacing material (see Table 2). Use only the polished stone value (PSV) in your discussion
