History Fair 2012!

Seventh grade students will be participating in the 2nd Annual Lakeview History Fair. What is History Fair? Students identify an event (this years theme is Turning Points) in Illinois or Chicago history to do research on. From there, students create a question to drive their research, collect information, and explore. When students believe they have formed an opinion or found an answer, they construct a display, write a paper, produce a documentary, or perform an original work show what they have learned. Before we go any further, it is highly recommended that students have: Interest! Students must OWN their topic. With the amount of time well be working on this, I cant suggest this enough. Select the topic yourself, love it, and own your work youre going to be doing a lot of work with it the next 10 weeks! A Public Library Card! Students will need to research online though databases, visit their library, and potentially use neighboring libraries to compile sufficient research. Google will not be enough. Time! The two big times where work is intense will be early October (with research requiring a trip to a library; the best projects usually take students to a second location such as the Field Museum, the Chicago History Museum, etc) and late November (when students finish building their displays.

History Fair is first and foremost a school project. This project culminates in the construction of a display to represent student research and findings. This History Fair will take place from 5:00-7:00pm on Thursday, December 6th 120 student projects on display in the New Gym! Nearly all work done towards its completion will be done in class. This is the core of our work in class the next few 4-5 weeks, and all facets of this project research, analysis, synthesis, and writing will be taught, explained and guided in class. Here is a general outline of details, deadlines, and what parents and students can expect.
