Future proof your next video installation by choosing the right cables.

The key to make certain that your next video installation will not rapidly become outdated as you or your clients adopt new technology is to ensure that the signals distribution Return Loss parameters for your installation are held within certain critical limits.

Return Loss
One of the most important parameters for any cable transmission system is Return Loss (RL). This is a measure of the ratio of signal power launched into a distribution system to the power reflected back to the source. Return Loss changes the amplitude of the signal reaching the receiver, decreasing the effective cable distance. Good Return Loss performance is the key to high frequency/data rate performance, keeping bit errors at an acceptable level within system expectations. The Return Loss of the transmission system will be a function of the frequency/data rate used and becomes more difficult to control at high frequencies/data rates. The Return Loss of the transmission path is not just a function of the cable. Connectors and the transmitting/receiving equipment are also vitally important factors that will affect the links performance.

The Future is HDTV

The wide-spread use of DVD in the home shows the viewer the achievable quality in sound and picture now possible. This will inevitably create a demand for the fidelity that HDTV can achieve. HDTV will require upgrades throughout the Broadcasting industry, creating additional opportunities. International competitions such as Olympic games, Formula One, football and many other sports have become very popular and have a need for the highest technology that the broadcaster can obtain, to assure viewer satisfaction. Belden has a range of coaxes available now that exceeds the SMPTE RL specification for HDTV distribution and provides maximum RL Headroom to ensure that the user can achieve the SMPTEs requirement for signal distribution: Specification SMPTE Recommended RL Limit Belden Guaranteed RL Specification Limit Belden Guaranteed RL Specification Limit RL > 15 dB > 23 dB > 21 dB Frequency 5 1.5 GHz 5 850 MHz 850 MHz 3 GHz

Television Standards
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) have developed several standards for serial digital video transmissions (SDI), and a 540 Mb/s format is currently under development. There is also a European standards body known as the ITU ( formerly CCIR) that developed the composite video standard for Europe known as PAL / SECAM. The most common is the 270 Mb/s SDI (Serial Digital Interface). All of the specifications differ in bandwidth requirements and transmission technology, i. e., composite, component and digital: Data rate 143 Mb/s 177 Mb/s 270 Mb/s 360 Mb/s 540 Mb/s 1.5 Gb/s Bandwidth 71.5 MHz 88.5 MHz 135.0 MHz 180.0 MHz 270.0 MHz 750.0 MHz Standard SMPTE 259M ITU-R BT.601 SMPTE 259M SMPTE 259M SMPTE344M SMPTE 292M Description NTSC PAL/Secam Component Video 4:3 Component 16:9 Component Widescreen HDTV

Using Belden coaxial cable will result in a minimum 6 dB of Headroom to accommodate to RL reduction introduced by: connectors, patch-bays, etc.

What Causes Return Loss

To ensure that the cables are electrically sound, every reel must be 100 % sweep tested for RL. Care must be taken when installing digital and especially high definition coax. Wrong connectors, improper handling, cable pulling and installation techniques can deform the cables, which can in turn cause a RL problem. Keys to good Return Loss: 1. Cable Manufacturing Manufacturing consistency High velocity crush resistant dielectric Here is the actual RL data of Belden 1505A. The cable is typically - 30 dB:

For High Definition Television ( HDTV ) cables a band-width of 750 MHz is required with good RL performance at the third harmonic frequency of 2.25 GHz (3 x 750). Belden coaxes intended for HDTV applications are currently tested up to 3 GHz and have a typical RL of 30 dB.

Transmission Performance Tests

Currently there is no industry standard to test the signal distribution path for digital video or HDTV applications. However, Belden suggests measuring and documenting the RL on every link to ensure that the SMPTE minimum suggested level of - 15 dB is met. Any reflected energy caused by connectors, cable, transition devices, patch panels and improper cable installation or handling, reduces the power of the transmitted signal. Measuring RL will indicate just how well each link will perform with SDI or HDTV video signal.

2. Cable Handling Employ proper handling and cable pulling techniques 3. Cable Installation Do not exceed recommended bending radius and tie wrapping of cables in accordance to manufacturers specifications 4. Connectors Use only high quality 75 Ohm connectors

Conclusion
To arrive at the SMPTE recommendation (< - 15 dB RL), it is necessary to start with lower than - 15 dB for the cable run to allow for losses introduced by other equipment in the signal path. Remember, good RL performance that stays consistently good is essential for high quality signal connectivity over cable. Beldens cable products have been designed not only to do the job but to exceed all current industry standards. Make Belden cables your first choice for all new installations to ensure quality of performance now and in the future. Play it safe with your next installation by using Belden, who have the products and technical support that will exceed your expectations.
