It is important to remember that Auto Pan is not designed for continual 24 hour usage as this places undue strain on the Pan gearing. We do not recommend that the Auto Pan mode is used for more than 12 hours each day as any failure of Pan gearing due to the head being left in permanent auto pan is not covered by manufacturers warranties. It is also worth considering using more cameras instead of Auto Pan as the increased reliability and lower cost of CCD cameras can make this a more viable option. This is also applicable to pan and tilt heads fitted with presets. These are often left on a permanent tour and this can lead to premature failure of the pan/tilt unit and again is not covered by manufacturers' warranty. Please telephone our technical department for further advice. TIPS Care should always be taken when installing wipers to ensure that the camera does not view the blade. Simply switch them on and off a few times to find the worst case park position before installing the camera. Washer units can pump a nominal head of up to 10 metres, although it is best to keep this to a minimum for reliable operation. You should never install the reservoir above the housing as this can lead to the entire contents being syphoned away. Remember that washer units will also require re-filling on a regular basis.

WASHERS AND WIPERS FIXED SYSTEMS Wipers are often specified on fixed camera installations which necessitates the inclusion of hardwire or telemetry control to switch the wipers on and off. This is not usually cost effective and often unnecessary unless the angle of the camera housing means that the view is often obscured by rain or is sited in a dirty location. Wipers are not normally essential to a fixed camera system and are best avoided.

The combination of monitors and brackets can, because of the varying dimensions, cause potentially unsafe installations. After a number of incidents we have initiated a vigorous testing programme to ensure compatibility of monitors and brackets to safeguard your interests. Following these tests we recommend the use of brackets and Vista monitors as detailed in this chart. However it must remain the responsibility of the installer to ensure the monitor and mount are secured safely at the time of installation

Infra-red lamps are available in different powers and with either 715nM or 830nM filters. The choice of filter is dependant on a combination of factors: a) can the user accept that the light can be easily seen. 715nM lamps look like a red traffic light at night.

Camera It can be a minefield for installers faced with impressive claims of zero or low lux2 cameras, but in essence, without light there can be no picture. All CCD cameras offer some degree of IR response though some have enhanced IR performance that make them more suitable for longer range applications or for use with low power IR sources such as LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). The latest chip sets (such as EXview and EXwave) offer excellent low noise, high resolution, and low smear characteristics together with excellent IR response. Day/night cameras are intended to provide the best solution for 24 hour surveillance colour by day and monochrome /IR sensitive by night. There are different forms of day/night cameras with some incorporating optical filters that are

IR is sometimes called black light and lies approximately between 700nM and 1,000nM1 (1 micron). The eye cannot efficiently see beyond 730nM whilst CCD Cameras can see up to 1000nM and this enables the use of semi-covert and covert IR applications.Diagram A demonstrates what the human eye can see (the photopic curve) and what a normal monochrome camera can see (CCD), also illustrated on this diagram is the increased sensitivity of specialist IR sensitive cameras (extended IR CCD). Notice that the camera sensitivity drops as the wavelength increases. This means that the camera sees less of the light distributed on the scene. There is often a requirement for semicovert or covert installations. Graphs B, C and D demonstrate a 730nM filter, 830nM and 950nM filter. The 730nM filter will glow similar to a traffic light, an 830nM filter will give off a dull red glow only just visible to the human eye. The 950nM will appear covert, with no glow visible. The key factors in choosing the type of IR lamp relate to the required viewing distance and scene. As demonstrated in the diagrams below the sensitivity of the camera is an important element, additionally the lens sensitivity and type play an important role. When designing CCTV systems for effective 24-hour surveillance three issues are central: the camera, the lens and illumination.

DEFINING INFRA-RED

Illumination The key to a successful night scheme is having sufficient light, the right quality of light and the right control over the light. The best solution is IR lighting at the camera head controlled by either telemetry (for manual switching on/off) or photocell (for automatic operation when the light drops below a certain level). The viewing distances that can be achieved depend upon camera and lens type and these can affect system performance by as much as 50% compared with daylight operation. All cameras are less efficient at 850nM and achievable distances can be reduced by at

Lens At night, it is essential to maximise the light gathering capability of the lens (i.e. have the lowest `f` stop) but this will reduce the depth of field of the picture, which may cause focusing problems. An auto iris lens will naturally open to its maximum aperture (lowest `f` stop3) in low light operation but on a fixed lens there may need to be a compromise between the low light operation and its depth of field focussing. Daylight and IR light do not focus on the CCD at the same point because of the different ways in which the wavelengths of light pass that through the lens. This may cause a focus shift between daytime and IR operation. The degree of focus shift may depend on a variety of factors depending on the quality of lenses, the wavelength of the IR filter (830nM & 950nM) will give a more exaggerated focus shift and the IR response of the camera. Some manufacturers have developed a range of lenses with zero focus shift between daytime and IR performance. This is of considerable interest to CCTV system designers especially for unmanned or non-telemetry controlled installations.

least 25%, whilst at 950nM the performance of many camera/lens combination can be reduced by over 60% compared with daylight conditions. When choosing an IR lamp, consideration should be given to the lamps ability to provide even illumination. This ensures that the returned radiated energy to the camera is the same for wherever the subject is in the scene and avoids white out on the screen. Additional factors such as bulb life and running costs should also be taken into account. In general, IR lamps driven via the mains tend to have considerably lower bulb life and higher running costs than low voltage IR lamps. It is also important to match the camera lens to the beam pattern of the infra red light. Mismatching in this area can lead to either poor picture quality or loss of IR efficiency. For example, a camera with a 8mm lens on a 1/2 inch CCD would give a 43 degree horizontal spread (approximately) but if a traditional spot and flood approach was used here, the resulting picture would more then likely have a white circle in the centre of the screen. This is because a spot lens will only illuminate a small selection of the field of view. The flood lens may be wasting 30% of its energy outside the field of view. Solid-state devices such as LEDs (Light Emitting Diode) bring major advantages, including lower maintenance levels and lower power consumption. The LED units can provide up to 10 years life. However, they provide less power on scene then halogen IR lamps. LEDs are beginning to make a bigger impact on the CCTV scene because of the increased IR sensitivity of emerging monochrome cameras. Certain manufacturers combine the camera, lens and LED illumination into one package. These are sometimes termed IDN products, which means Integrated Day and Night (IR) performance. These products sense the ambient light levels and switch on the IR when insufficient light is available. However, the achievable distance with IDN products is usually less then 50m so it is only suitable for certain applications.

1 nM stands for Nanometre - 10-9 of a metre - and is used to measure the distance between the wavelengths of light. The distance between light wavelengths determines the colour of light eg at 400nM, 2 Visible light is measured in Lux (metric measurement of light striking a surface) and is not applicable to IR. IR illuminators are 0 Lux by definition. 3 The light gathering speed of the lens is expressed as an f-stop number. This measures the amount of light captured by the lens in a given period of time. The lower the f-stop range, the more light that can be transmitted which in turn leads to a higher quality of captured image.

Technical Issue The adoption of varifocal lenses has caused difficulty in specifying lighting. With varifocal lenses the exact FOV is often only established on site through trial and error making exact matching to fixed angle lighting impossible in advance. Raytec provide a range of Adaptive Illumination varifocal lighting allowing the output angle of an illuminator to be adjusted on site to match the set-up of a varifocal lens.

2. Angle The illumination should ideally match the angle the camera / lens is set-to in order to provide best performance. If not, and too narrow an illumination angle is chosen, the camera will simply see a bright spot in the middle of the scene and the contrast between light and dark areas on scene will be too great to provide high quality images. Illumination which is too wide wastes energy and reduces achievable distance.

HOW TO SPECIFY LIGHTING

1. Infra-Red or White-Light? Identifying the purpose of the system identifies the type of light to use.
Infra-Red Full Colour Easy Setup Covert ADVANTAGES

Infra-Red light provides greater distance, a varying degree of invisibility (depending on the exact wavelength) and no light pollution. Infra-Red is light designed only to be used by CCTV cameras. White-Light provides the opportunity to illuminate an area for pedestrians, staff or vehicles in addition to the CCTV system. It can also be used as a visual deterrent, turned on when an intruder is detected by a PIR.

3. Distance? After selecting the angle, the next consideration is distance. How far should the lighting illuminate? Installers and specifiers should be aware that as angle increases, distance decreases. Raytec publish a table of achievable distances using their products. The specialist wide angle illuminators provide 120180 illumination meaning it is now possible to illuminate up to 360 at significantly less cost and with less installation effort, than ever before using only 2 illuminators. Wide angle illumination is technically the best solution to dome illumination providing purpose designed, even illumination fitted at the camera.

Wide Angle Lighting Achieving 360 degree lighting for domes has traditionally been very expensive, requiring multiple illuminators. However, we now offer a series of wide angle illuminators from Raytec purpose designed for fully functional domes. The new wide angle illuminators are available in RAYMAX (Infra-Red) and RAYLUX (White-Light) variations and are fitted with Adaptive Illumination providing varifocal lighting. Adaptive Illumination is a new concept introduced and patented by Raytec allowing the installer to adjust the horizontal beam angle on site to match the specific needs of the installation.

If you wish, the bases of the towers can be delivered early to enable civil works to take place prior to the main component arriving.
