President Barack Obama is having trouble drawing large crowds on the campaign trail. At the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, his campaign was forced (http://www.dailymail.co.uk /news/article-2198206/Democrats-set-Obamas-big-speech74-000-seater-outdoor-stadium-20-000-seater-indoorarena.html) to move his acceptance speech from the 74,000-seat Bank of America Stadium to the 20,000 Time Warner Cable Arena, citing weather as the excuse. But the media are always eager to help--for example, putting 18,000 people inside a 5,000-seat arena at an Obama event in Milwaukee on Saturday.
The contradiction was first noted by battlegroundwatch.com (http://battlegroundwatch.com/2012/09/23/how-big-was-obamas-crowdin-wisconsin/). Local media, including the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, reported that Obama had addressed "supporters who filled the 5,000-seat BMO Harris Pavilion, along with thousands more who sat in bleachers and stood on the pavement beyond the protection of the roof, even as wind and rain lashed down in the latter moments of the near 30-minute speech." The pavilion was not "filled"--a local reporter for Patch.com filmed empty seats (http://shorewood.patch.com/articles/video-obama-rallies-supportersin-milwaukee#video-11457586) in the bleachers at the side of the arena (see above). Nevertheless, the Journal-Sentinal played it safe, putting attendance at roughly 5,000-plus, a small but respectable turnout.

That's not how national media covered it. Darren Samuelsohn of Politico reported (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0912/81556.html?hp=t1) that the president addressed "a crowd the Obama campaign estimated at 18,000 in a city park overlooking Lake Michigan" in an attempt to "lock up" Wisconsin. Laura Meckler of the Wall Street Journal--whose news section, according (http://www.timgroseclose.com/) to UCLA professor Tim Groseclose, is the most liberal of any major mainstream outlet--repeated (http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2012/09 /22/obama-makes-pitch-to-wisconsin-in-the-rain/) the campaign's 18,000 claim without even revealing the source of the official-sounding estimate. Both outlets described the location of the rally as a "park," without revealing the name of the arena itself, which would have given the game away. The images provided by news wires are predominantly close-up shots such as the one above, showing Obama surrounded by a small circle of supporters. Only Getty Images has a wider shot (http://www.gettyimages.com.au/detail/news-photo/president-barackobama-speaks-to-supporters-during-a-news-photo/152588728), similar to images (http://www.democraticunderground.com/1251104051) at the left-wing message board Democratic Underground that show the inside of the arena. That's a full-ish arena, but nowhere near 18,000 people. There seem to be no images at all of the 13,000 people who supposedly made up the difference outside the BMO Harris Pavilion. (I'll be happy to correct this article if anyone can find any.) Meanwhile, the nation is being told that Obama drew a massive crowd--nearly the size of the crowd at his acceptance speech in Charlotte--in a crucial swing state six weeks before the election is over. In 2007-08, I was a detective in suburban Ohio. We saw all the candidates many, many times. We were pressed into service during Obama's campaign when he visited a local high school. The gym holds about 3,000 people and the speech was in the middle of a school day. To my shock and surprise, no one from the high school attended the speech. About 20-25 busses full of Obama supporters arrived and filled in all the front rows of the gym. A woman briefed them all on when to clap, cheer, etc. Someone else made all the media position right behind the Obama supporters, numbering no more than 300, creating the illusion on TV that he was speaking to a full house. I thought surely the media would eat this guy alive. I had no idea they have been in on it since the beginning...

The 2012 election is a turnout battle, pure and simple - just like 2004. The polls do not matter because there are no undecided voters. Everyone chose sides long ago. No one is changing their minds. The only "undecided" issue is whether to show up and vote at all. Overestimating crowds is one technique of ginning up enthusiasm in Obama supporters who might be too lazy to vote if they thought Romney was sure to win. And likewise, it demoralizes Republicans who assume their guy is going to lose, so why bother to vote? That is what this is all about.

This exaggeration is another reason we ought not to be so worried about poll data coming out that seems to show Romney standing even or behind Obama by a few points. Most of those polls reflect phone calls to the elderly who are home to answer surveys, not so much the younger or working class that are somewhere else. Obama is having trouble selling "change," since all change so far has been for the worse. That he keeps running the show circuit ('The View', etc), and not engaging in statesmanship, is another reason to not be alarmed. His appeal is to emotion and ignorance and painlessness rather than to policy and substance. It's all part of the being the master image-maker for the left. But "forward" is looking now as empty as those empty seats. People see his apathy and his hollowness.

The people in Charlotte were tooled unmercifully by the Obama team at the DNC. It was apparent for weeks that the Bank of America Stadium could not be filled. The DNC staged lines of hopeful ticket recipients, as if the demand was enormous. The lines moved very slowly, vetting ticket holders who they crassly knew would never have an event to attend. Behind the scenes, tickets were distributed in bars, restaurants, and churches. Advance men were in South Carolina and Georgia trying to see if logistics to bus in a crowd would work. It was like a lackluster pre-season NFL game between the Chiefs and Browns...no matter how many tickets were distributed, the stadium would be half full. The weather that night was ideal, although there was a brief shower earlier, typical of summer rains in the South. Even the complicit press can't disguise this smoke and mirrors campaign "as if" Obama is still wildly popular and that he a great leader. In truth, our president is an indecisive, thin-skinned extremist who hasn't a clue how to lead and more and more informed people have lost their love for America's multi-cultural icon. He suddenly seems to have no stomach for the job, preferring to hang with celebrities, sports figures, and dwindling crowds of admirers rather than meet with his Cabinet, Jobs Council, or Congressional leaders.
