APHM International Healthcare Conference 2012 17 19 July 2012

ospitals are not about the latest medical technologies; they are about people - skilled, committed individuals. The war for skilled talent is a global phenomenon. With Malaysia pushing its way towards developed nation status, this war has become even more acute and urgent. Yes, we have added lots of training institutions; yes, we are producing healthcare workers by the hundreds if not thousands each year - but do we have the right skill-sets for our industry? What are we doing about meeting the need for ongoing competency and knowledge up-skilling for existing healthcare workers? We acknowledge that a significant number of Malaysian healthcare workers - nurses, doctors, researchers, managers, work overseas - particularly in the OECD nations. Do we have a window of opportunity for brain gain, bringing Malaysian talent home amidst the global economic slowdown? How are we doing, and how do our efforts and strategies stack up against our neighbouring nations?

APHM International APHM International Nursing Conference Nursing Conference

19 July 2012 19 July 2012

urses form the backbone of medical service delivery in the hospital. Nurses can represent up to half of the labour workforce of a hospital i.e. a significant expense, one that is compounded by the cost of ongoing training and competency up-skilling. These expenses are made worse by the turnover of staff, with the average SRN staying in position just three years before being poached by other countries or leaving the profession for good. so whats going on here? Are nurses what they used to be or is the profession in the midst of a sea change? Is this a generational effect?
