Fifteen students per year are selected to undergo this program. The program runs from September to May each year, but an extension to July may be granted for students remaining in the San Antonio area through the summer. In addition to shadowing their assigned nurse(s), admitted students will be required to participate in public health focused educational sessions to gain an understanding on various aspects of public health/community health, health education and the role a nurse plays in providing education to a patient. The sessions are developed and taught by nurses and public health professionals. The topics of discussion include, but are not limited to, HIPAA, alternative lifestyles, cultural competency, Transgender/GLBTQ, personal hygiene, congestive heart failure, depression, diabetes, obesity and renal failure, among others. Day One Orientation: All admitted participants must attend the Day One Orientation. Orientation is comprised of completion of confidentiality forms and other related paperwork, review of HIPAA, nurse meetings/group assignments and the viewing of a series of videos.
