ypsies, Shakespeare, jousting and turkey legs can only mean one thing, the Renaissance Faire will soon visit Folsom. Folsoms 20th annual Renaissance Faire brings 16th century fun to town Oct. 20-21. The fair will be held in City Lions Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Attendees will journey back to the time of William Shakespeare as they stroll through a 16th century-style village brought to life by hun-
dreds of actors in colorful period costume and character, said Sarah Trobee, Folsom recreation coordinator. The event will include about 40 vendors with food and drinks, handmade crafts and wares and entertainment provided by jousters, jugglers, swordsmen, musicians and merrymakers. We transform Folsom City Park into a 16th century English village thats brought to life by hundreds of actor and period costume, Trobee said. This is really a fun step back in time, providing a
living history event for the entire family. This annual fundraiser brings in about 4,000 people over the weekend and benefits the Cave Teen Centers located at both middle schools in Folsom. The City of Folsom contracts with Renaissance Productions to produce this annual fair in Folsom. Parking is $4 and admission is $14 for adults and $9 for children and seniors. just to name a few. Hundreds converge on the country club to sip wine and ogle the gleaming pieces of machinery. Every year is more successful, said Sacramento area car dealer Rick Niello, whose company is the title sponsor. At last years event, classic cars including a1962 JF VRC race car, a 1965 J-1 Jaguar and a classic 1948 U-Class MG, were on display during the day-long event. John and Carmen Clemens, of El Dorado Hills, entered their 1959 Chevrolet Corvette for the car show last year. This is their third time at the show. The cause is good, John said. When we go to shows, it has to be for a charity. A portion of the proceeds from the event benefit the Concours Foundation. The groups mission is to provide education, resources, grants and funding to teenage youth in the areas of safe and sober driving.
Local car buff Greg Madsen said, although he doesnt own a classic or vintage vehicle, he makes it a point each year to enjoy the Councours at Serrano. Its a great way to spend an early fall day, Madsen said. We have a cocktail, grab some lunch and check out the cars that are way too expensive for me to afford. Tickets are $35 in advance and $45 at the gate. Children 12 and younger are admitted at no charge with a paid adult. If caught early, the survival rate is great, Love said. If its in a higher stage they have a bigger battle to deal with. So we help them navigate those scary waters and send them to resources that we think are really going to help them. Andreoni said she wanted to keep active and working, even when she temporarily lost her hair due to chemotherapy, and she found wigs to be uncomfortable. I went looking for hats for people to wear when they lost their hair, and they all looked like they had lost their hair, Andreoni said. Thats why I started wrapping the scarves. Other women in the clinics would like them, and the nurses would always run over to see what I was wearing that day. As a result she began designing what she calls Titillating Turbans, which have been part of Jesmonts fashion show at previous breast cancer benefits. wineries that are fan favorites. Wofford Acres Vineyards might be one of the hardest vineyards to reach, but it is said to be worth the drive. Visitors may notice a narrow lane giving way to a vista that is impossible to ignore. There, a pine-tree filled canyon rests just beyond the vineyard, where Paul and Mike Wofford took advantage of the views by setting up an outdoor tasting room. Our La Mancha series is what we are known for, Paul said. We work our five acres most days, and we only produce 2,000 cases a year. The Woffords wines can be found in a couple of area restaurants. Otherwise, wine enthusiasts will have to head to the tasting room to find their favorites. The 2009 Iowa Hill is a blend of zinfandel, petite sirah and syrah. This blend is described as a flavorful blend of spices, currants and a hint of cranberry. The owners said one of the vineyards big surprises is their hard apple cider. The gluten-free buckwheat pancakes are a favorite. The caf offers glutenfree menu items to help meet every persons diet needs. The bakery case also holds a wide array of goodies, with more than half of them gluten free. Our chef and owner, Sarah Boudjakdji, tries to make every dish meet a lot of dietary needs, Tomlinson said. Everything is made in-house, and Sarah even makes her own vegetarian Worcestershire sauce. Owners said attention is paid to every detail, from the natural atmosphere that includes tumbled river rock table dcor, to burgundy cloth napkins, to the organic feel of the place, which matches the organic offerings. he region offers a variety of spooky events for families this October in celebration of the Halloween season. Zittel Farms has been in business since 1976, and as the only farm left in Folsom, they can offer a unique experience to young kids this fall. We have animals, a petting zoo, pony rises on the weekends, a small corn maze and hay rides for kids and a pumpkin patch, said Gail Zittel who owns and operates the farm with her husband Roger. We are a small family business, we do it all. We are unique and seasonal and we love what we do. Zittel said the farm is longtime tradition for many families in the region and she has watched generations come to visit the farm every year. People can come and spend a few hours with us, we are a tradition. We are the only living and acting farm left here in Folsom, Zittel said. We teach and show kids how things grow and what we do here. We want people to come and enjoy themselves and maybe even buy a pumpkin. The farm is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays. There is free parking and admission for all ages.
The Folsom Historic District will again be lit with pumpkins this month for the annual family event down Sutter Street.
The Night of 1000 Pumpkins will be from 6
p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, on Sutter Street in Folsom. Pumpkins will line Sutter Street and the outdoor amphitheater, said Stephanie Rodgers, Folsom Historic District Association director. Pumpkins can be dropped off for the contest from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at 200 Wool St., curbside next to the Folsom Chamber of Commerce. Participants will then receive a raffle ticket for every carved pumpkin dropped off, Rodgers said. The evening also includes trick or treating with merchants in the Historic District from 6 to 8 p.m. and a childrens costume contest on stage in the amphitheater at 6:30 p.m. Its a Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown will play in the outdoor amphitheater at 7:15 p.m. and a raffle will follow at 7:45 p.m. The night will end with a showing of Ghostbusters at 8:15 p.m. in the outdoor amphitheater. RECREATION
EVENT SCHEDULE

heres something about mud that seems to get the little kid in all of us excited. The third annual Merrell Down and Dirty Mud and Obstacles Series, slated for Oct. 27-28 at the Folsom Lake Recreation Area in Granite Bay, features a mud pit that participants have to crawl through and its not only the best place to photograph the event, but also the place where smiles are abundant. The mud pit is definitely one of the favorites, said Scott Roegner, special projects coordinator for MESP, who puts on the event. People like to go out and dive in the mud. Its a good thing. Between 3,000 and 4,000 people are expected at the event, which is on the higher end of MESPs events held nationwide. In large cities where the event is held, such as Philadelphia, around 6,000 compete. This event, however, features much more than a mud pit. The 5kilometer and 10-kilometer races feature several obstacles that participants must either climb over or crawl under to proceed with the race. These obstacles add to the enjoyment of what otherwise would be nothing more than a cross country run. There are a variety of things that make this a popular event, Roegner said. For starters its challenging. You have either a 5K or a 10K run on trails and then youve

got 18 obstacles to negotiate which either tests your strength or its something you have to climb over or go under. Its a family-oriented event or something you can do with a group of friends. Afterwards we have a barbecue and live music and awards. People just hang out and enjoy themselves. Another one of the favorite obstacles is a 25foot inflatable where competitors must climb up a cargo net and then slide down the inflatable on the other side. The slippery ladder, which is soaped up and not easy to hold on to, is another favorite obstacle, according to Roegner. Jeff Thorne of Fair Oaks competed in the first two mud runs at Folsom Lake and hes looking forward to the third. This time, however, he will enjoy it with his 13-year-old son, Jaycob. I love the fact that it is a national event that comes on tour locally, Thorne said. I like the fact that it has a great sponsor in Merrell and it supports the military. For the first timer the
event is even better because theres so much energy and excitement generated. What I like about the course is that they always have surprises and things youre just not
expecting. I run a lot of 5Ks and 10Ks, but this is a fun way to get into it. Jaycob, who last year competed in the Adventure Kids 1-mile race, will join his dad in the 5K race, making it more of a
family affair. New to this years event is the 5K night race to be held Oct. 27 starting at 7 p.m. Participants will be required to provide their own head-
lamps for the race. On Sunday, Oct. 28 there will be two 5K runs, one 10K run and 1-mile run and 100-yard dash event for the younger competitors.

ocals can cruise the seas while benefiting the Folsom History Museum through a special Cruise Planners fundraiser. Lisa Kennedy, a Folsom Cruise Planners - American Express Travel agent, is holding the fundraising cruise. Kennedy said $100 for each stateroom booked will be donated to the museum. The fundraising cruise includes a six-night Western Caribbean cruise on the Royal Caribbeans Independence of the Seas sailing on March 24, 2013. Folsom History Museum Director Mary Mast said this is a great way to expand fundraising for the museum.
This is something that people might want to do anyways by getting out of town during the cold winter months to take a March family vacation, Mast said. So rather than just donating $100 to the museum or sending in money, families are able to get something back for their money. During this sailing, which is round trip from Ft. Lauderdale, the ship will visit Grand Caymen, Jamaica and Haiti. With two days at sea, passengers can try the ships rock-climbing wall, the ice-skating rink and the flow-rider. Passengers will receive complimentary dinner for two in one of the ships specialty restaurants and one Royal Caribbean coupon book-
let per stateroom. Im very excited to have the opportunity to support the Folsom History Museum by using this cruise as a fundraiser for them, said Kennedy. Royal Caribbean offers a great multi-generational cruising experience. This sailing is during spring break for both the Folsom Cordova Unified School District and the San Juan Unified School District, making it a perfect option for local families. It returns to Ft. Lauderdale the Saturday before Easter, which gives families opportunity to fly home in time for Easter, or spend extra time in Ft. Lauderdale. ake Tahoe is probably the ultimate daytripping adventure and its just a quick trip away. Anyone living in the region realizes Tahoes cobalt blue waters, clear skies and multitude of year-round activities make the perfect get away. With the focus on the outdoors, Tahoe offers more than 70 miles of shoreline as well as adventures in surrounding mountains that provide a diversity that takes years of day-tripping to discover them all. We enjoyed the lake
with with swimming and kayaking. The afternoon was spent at Zephyr Cove, a few miles into the Nevada side, just off of Highway 50. The milelong private beach and dock included beach volleyball, parasailing, watercraft rentals as well as a bar and grill. Evenings were spent with friends enjoying the cool crisp air as the sunset provided a postcard view of the lake. Following dinner and cocktails at Edgewood Golf Course, we enjoyed a moon-lit walk on the beach. Another evening was spent enjoying the gaming and nightlife at
one of their casinos. Now that fall is in the air, there isnt a more beautiful place to take a nice long hike and enjoy the changing colors. Lake Tahoes southern shore embraces Emerald Bay, a photographers heaven, just off Highway 89. Whether its a hot air balloon ride, a trip around the lake the Safari Rose, a float in a canoe on the crystal clear lake or lunging in one of hundreds of lakefront sundecks, Lake Tahoe is more than a day trip, its a northern California and Nevada destination offering exploration, recreation, relaxation and inspiration.
