For the last few months the Wyvern team has been looking forward to visiting London for the final of the Shine Media Awards. So on the 24th June 2012 editor of the Wyvern Liam Pape, Sports Correspondent Sam Hutchinson, Secretary Katie Appleyard, Head Journalist Rebecca Parkinson, Librarian Mrs Surtees and Head teacher Mr Kipling got on a train to Kings Cross Station in hope that the next day they would be making an acceptance speech. Before that though, they decided to have a look around London. Their hotel was less than 500 meters away from the London Eye and their closest tube station was next to Westminster. The evening before their big day they had tea at the Hard Rock Cafe where many of them almost exploded. Rebecca Parkinson quotes The atmosphere in the Hard Rock cafe was immense and the music was so loud it was like being on the front row of a concert. Liam and Sam had the legendary 10oz burger and they said it definitely lived up to its name. The next morning everyone was up early to get breakfast; Later they caught multiple tubes and finally arrived at Stationers Hall near St. Pauls Cathedral. They went in and received loads of freebies from different sponsors. The freebies varied from HP Beach Towels to BBC Top Gear magasines. On that morning the Wyvern team attended publishing related presentations. At around 12:15 all the schools helped themselves to a buffet lunch and then it was finally time for the award ceremony. Nervously, the Wyvern team sat at the back waiting for their categories. The first category they were mentioned in was The Best Overall Content and amazingly they were in the top 4! Next time they were mentioned, it was for The Most Outstanding Pupil where Liam Pape had been nominated and surprisingly he won! He received a plaque and newspaper publishing software for the school. Mr Kipling quoted Im really proud of Liam for winning the shine award

Facebook Phone
It was announced earlier this month that Facebook might be releasing their own mobile phone by next year. The closest thing Facebook has to it's own mobile phone the HTC ChaCha. It has it's own Facebook button at the bottom of the keyboard which lets you share photo's and video's instantly. The HTC ChaCha and Windows Phones have Facebook chat integrated so if a Facebook phone was released what new features would it bring to the smartphone market? So although the Facebook Phone might attract some dedicated Facebook-ers I doubt it will be a success because everything you can do on Facebook you can do on oth-

In a survey of an average 48 people at DSMS we found out that 57% of students have a smartphone er phones plus more. We and of them 38% always bring it to still don't know the details of this phone or school. 28% of students have an the price however I think iPod Touch and 28% unless it announces something have an iPad or some other revolutionary we will end up sort of computer tablet.

Even if Great Britain doesnt win a medal...

Im not a pessimist and Im sure that Britain wont walk away from the Olympic games medalless but imagine if they did. Would it be that bad? Probably not because the legacy the games are going to leave behind is going to be massive. London is hosting the games this year which means hundreds of previously unemployed Londoners have been trained and employed to build the Olympic Venues. Hopefully when the games are over they will be able to use the skills they have learnt and get a job or start their own business. When the Beijing Olympics ended, China turned their Swimming Venue into a massive swimming complex with huge slides and big pools so normal people got an opportunity to use the venues instead of the venues being exclusive for athletes. Hopefully London will do something along these lines with all of their Venues.

STEM NEWS

With the latest Apple operating system (iOS6) coming out in Autumn I though Id tell you about some of the main features. Finally, Facebook integration is included. This means you can post photos, your location, app information and web pages straight to Facebook from your Apple device. Next is the new Apple mapping app replacing Google Maps. The new app gives you and Ariel 3D view of some parts of the world, it speaks turn-by-turn directions and by clicking a building where a business is it can tell you information about the business and how to contact them.

A new app called Passbook has been made for iOS6 which allows you to store tickets, store cards and even boarding passes. This idea probably came from a news story a few months ago where a man was able to pass a border by just a photo of his passport on his iPad. Sharing photos with friends through photostream has been added allowing your friends to view and comment on your photos from their Mac, Internet Browser or Apple TV. I dont know how much of a success this will be as there are already hundreds of photo sharing sites but then again, this one is made by Apple. So, with new features and improvements I think this operating system will keep Apple dominating the smartphone market.

Student Governors

Recently students from DSMS have been given the opportunity to run to be student governor. This will allow them to go the Governor meetings and get a say in what happens in the school. 5 pupils were shortlisted for student governor and the rest of the school were allowed to vote. The 5 pupils were Dominic Fairbridge, Harry Pape, Katie Appleyard, Rebecca Parkinson and Amy Davies. We interviewed 4 of the 5 for the Wyvern TV to see what they would like to change in the school and they were all focusing on different aspects of the school. The Library, Anti-Bullying policies, PE and making the school a safer place.

Wyvern TV
On the 27th February 2012 the DSMS Studio was finished and 3 journalists from the Wyvern took on the challenge of launching a brand new Wyvern TV show. Hosted by pupils in the school and with stories coming from local and national sources we hope that you will enjoy our monthly program which will get uploaded to the Wyvern Blog. For the first episode we got the privilege of interviewing MP of Darlington, Jenny Chapman, about changes at DSMS and what it is like being an MP. For the second episode we talked to some Saudi Arabians who were visiting the school from their department of education and for the 3rd Episode we interviewed editor of the Northern Echo, Peter Barron. We also cover stories which are covered in the newspaper however on TV we can show videos of the story instead of just pictures. Each program takes us around 2 weeks to make. This includes script writing,

I think that it has been an amazing resource for the school to have.

filming, finding stories and editing it when it is finished. The episodes vary from around 10-20 minutes depending on what were reporting on and who were talking to. The first show came out on the last day of March and we got around 200 video views. Apart from the Wyvern, the TV Studio is going to be used in lessons such as English, Art and CBL. We hope the TV studio will be used to its potential and give pupils an insight to how a TV studio works. PAPERMAIL: The TV Studio has been in fully working order for a while now (there are still small developments to be made) and I think that it has been an amazing resource for the school to have. There is so much you can use it for! Making music videos, filming drama pieces, producing a news show or just experiencing how a TV studio works.

When I first started working with he TV studio I couldn't believe how many jobs both in front and behind camera there were. For a start you need a good script written, then someone to run it on the auto-cue, someone to set up the camera shots and the set and sometimes even a group of people to sort out the green screen. Please, if anyone has any more idea's you can leave them in the comments box of the YouTube video or tweet them to us @DSMS_Wyvern

Gazette School Awards

Local News a small presentation, which went according to plan. Unfortunately, we didnt win this category, but we did really well to get down to the final 2 out of the entirety of the North East.
There was a break for lunch, in which we had Tomato and Basil Soup, Roast Chicken and Vegetables, and then Sticky toffee pudding. Liam, who didnt seem full after all of that, then had 5 complimentary chocolates, while the rest of us were full from that dinner. After this, the second half of the awards began, and our school wasnt featured until the final award; Headteacher of the year. Whilst waiting for this, other schools performed their presentations, which ranged from songs, to dances by a One Direction tribute group (a group of boys who just looked like them in a group) and we were definitely shocked by some of them. The time came for the Headteacher of the year to be announced, where Mr Kipling was up against 2 hopeful women. Again, we didnt win this category, but we were just happy with being a finalist. This triggered the end of the awards, and we all went our separate ways, but not before picking up our free gift bag from Northumbria Water. Overall, this day was fantastic and one that will be remembered for a while. By Rebecca Parkinson

On the 5th of July 2012, 3 students, Liam Pape, Katie Appleyard and myself, along with 3 teachers, Mr Cessford, Mrs Surtees and Mr Kipling, travelled down to the Stadium of Light in Sunderland for the Schools Evening Gazette Awards 2012, where we were shortlisted for 2 categories; Headteacher of the year and School Newspaper Award. To keep us occupied during the trip, we discussed possible names for the new Vertical Tutoring system, and then talked about hijacking Year 7, now 8, camp. Once at the awards, we were ushered inside the Banqueting Suite of the stadium and were greeted with a drink reception, which was orange juice and then added wine for the adults. We

then went into the actual room, which was beautifully decorated by the organisers and the Sunderland FA waitressing team was waiting behind the scenes. At this point the two parties had gathered and had been assigned to table 15, the last table in the room, and the furthest away from the stage. After settling in, the awards began, with the hosts being Steve and Karen, now the DJS on Metro Radio station. The School Newspaper award was the second in the proceedings, where our category was shortlisted to only two entries, other than the 3 or 4 entries within other categories. Our competition was Hetton School from Houghton Le Spring, who were very polite. Prior to the awards, Katie and I had to perform

Planet Leisure Review

A few months ago I decided to go to planet leisure with a couple of my friends. We all had a great time, and got to the experience multiple facilities it has to offer. It is a great place with a fun and exciting atmosphere. The furniture is all really comfortable with a great colour scheme to match. The only down side is it still felt strangely like the owners other business rough and tumble, so after a while you start to feel a bit childish and out of place. But apart from that the place itself is really nice. One of the things that I really enjoyed trying out was the bowling. It was great fun with an easy to learn start up system, so you werent standing around idle for 10 minutes waiting for someone to set up the scoring and barrier system. When you started bowling it was really great fun. The pins set up really quickly so you werent standing around waiting for your next shot, whilst the pins got cleared out of the way. Whilst other people are taking their shots there are sofas around the alley, so there is a place to sit (instead of stood up or on wooden seats). Overall I thought that the bowling was great and I would certainly do it again. The best part of going there was the food. It was really tasty. It was as good as the food that I had when I was little in rough and tumble. It was really nice but it still felt strangely like rough and tumble so again it felt weird. It still tasted really nice though. The final thing that I did there on my visit was the ice skating. That was brilliant fun and great to learn. The ice there was a sort of plastic which had a slippery liquid sprayed on it which was weird. I had gone ice skating before but that was on real ice so it kept you cool. But here though with special ice you got tired quicker. The spray that was on the ice was annoying. When you fell over it got stuck to your clothes, so I wouldnt wear anything good to go in. All in all, I thought the ice skating was absolutely amazing. There were a couple of other things that planet leisure had, that I didnt get to try out. A high wire sort of thing had been built above the ice rink. A sort of obstacle course suspended in the air which you had to work your way around whilst being help by a rope. It looked quite good although in my opinion it was definitely overpriced. Also there was an arcade there. It looked ok but it wasnt amazing, it definitely didnt live up to the standards of the rest of the place. Also there is a laser tag opening up. Im not sure if it is open now but it will defiantly be something to look into if you are thinking of going. It should probably tell you on the website so check it out on the internet if you have some spare time. By Matthew Currey

Watt Bike Challenge

Earlier this year the Watt Bike Challenge came to DSMS, 4 people from every tutor were nominated to cycle 1000 meters on a gym bike and the people with the fastest times got to go to the final at the Education Village where they would race students from other schools. The final was on 23 February 2012 and DSMS had a nervous team of 9 however when they arrived the pressure was relived when they realised there were students from another 6 schools in Darlington doing the same thing.

Torch Bearer
The Olympics only comes once every 4 years and it is an even better event when it arrives in England like what it has done this year. To mark the beginning of the games, the Olympic torch is being carried from Cornwall on the 19th May to London on day 70 of the journey which is on the 27th July. Luckily Samantha Gould from DSMS had got the once in a lifetime opportunity to carry the torch. She carried the torch in Hartlepool.

Austria 2012
The best trip Ive ever been on! Some called the 2012 DSMS trip to Neukirchen in Austria and I dont blame them for saying that. The Skiing trip started with an exhausting 26 hour bus journey on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th March however spirits were high. The bus journey took the group of 40 through countries including France, Germany and Switzerland until finally arriving in Austria. The group had 6 days of skiing and during that time they improved from falling over novices to speed skiing pros (or just about anyway). After skiing every day there were activities such as Swimming, Quizzes and opportunities to go into the games room. Sam Hutchinson quotes It was a good experience and I would recommend it to anyone thinking of going for next year.

Cycle Tournament
On the 23rd May there was a Year 7 and 8 Cycle Tournament taking place on the DSMS back field. Cyclists from DSMS, St Aidan's, Longfield and Haughton turned up on the day for a 10-15 minute race which was 3 laps of the specially made course going around some of the back fields at DSMS. The day was a sweltering 19C so the cyclists got tired out really quickly however it seemed that they enjoyed the day. There is a full report and footage in the Wyvern TV.

England Crash Out of Euro 2012

we were a neutral! A great goal from Andy Carroll opened the scoring but 2 shocking goals saw us go behind with less than 20 minutes left. Second half substitute Theo Walcott came on to steal the show for England with a rifling strike from outside the box and a solo run that laid off Danny Welbeck for an obscure goal that sealed a 3-2 scoreline in England's favour. In the third game England uncomfortably beat Ukraine 1-0 thanks to a Wayne Rooney goal. The other controversial moment in this game was the goal that wasn't for Ukraine which we call payback for 2 years ago in South Africa. With England winning and France losing, that made us top of the group and would mean we wouldn't have to face Spain in the next round. But Italy stood in our path. The game was slow starting and some vital chances went begging. Into Extra-time the game went but neither team seemed to want to win the game. Thinking of penalties soon became reality as the whistle went and everybody who had watched England in a Shoot out thought to themselves , 'well that is it for another 2 years!' And we were all right. England crashed out missing 2 penalties and leaving us all....well......as we were before! (trophy-less!!) By Sam Hutchinson

England crashed out of the Euro 2012 competition which was no more than us English hopefuls had for our team. The competition didn't start off as badly as we thought it would as Frances Samir Nasri equalised with a cracking goal just after Jolean Lescott had opened the scoring from a bullet header. The second game saw all the drama we could want from a football match....if

The Olympics is just around the corner and many people across the globe will be travelling to Great Britain to watch the mass show of sport that is on offer. Whether you want to see Usain Bolt do the 100m or you want to see Michael Phelps swim for USA you will be in for a special treat as all events will be televised whether you can or can't get tickets for your favourite Olympic sports. DSMS member of staff Mrs Blaylock will be helping out at the Olympics as well as 6 pupils will get the chance to go and watch a football match. There has been some controversy on some of the designated members of certain countries national teams but on the whole the Olympics is an exciting time for everyone who is involved.

Did you know... In the 1912 Summer Olympics at London instead of using clay pigeons they used real ones.

Did you know... The Olympic motto is Citius, Altius, Fortius which in Enlgish is Swifter, Higher, Stronger"
