Katie Cardenas Director of Graduate Studies

MEETINGS: Chevelle Newsome, Graduate Studies Dean: We met to discuss goals and opportunities for the upcoming year. From that meeting I came away with four areas of interest where I will focus my attention: Expand Professional Development Opportunities: The Dean and I discussed increasing career related events for graduate students, and she informed me that in the past the Graduate Studies Office has worked with the Career Center to offer resume, interview, and etiquette services. In the future, I plan to collaborate with the Dean, the Career Center, and ASI to work on providing and marketing more professional development opportunities. Improve Communication between Graduate Programs & Students: We discussed the difficulty of introducing graduate students from different programs so they can take advantage of studentto-student networking opportunities. To facilitate greater communication among students I have started an ASI Graduate Director Facebook page that will keep students updated on career, academic, ASI, campus, and community events and opportunities. You can like my page at facebook.com/ASIGrad. We also discussed potentially throwing a graduate student mixer or beginning a book club to increase communication across programs. Increase Graduate Studies Awareness to Undergraduates: The Dean also works to increase knowledge about graduate studies programs and requirements to undergraduate students who are interested. I plan to work with her to promote and help with these events. The first is Graduate Information Day on October 2nd in the Library Quad from 10:00-2:00. Determine which Services Graduate Students Value: Finally, the Dean and I discussed ways to determine what services graduate students value that are offered by Graduate Studies and other campus organizations so that we could work to expand them. I can help to facilitate this discussion through my Facebook page and by meeting with students. Pat Worley, ASI Executive Director: We discussed my role as a Board of Director and plans for the upcoming year.
